Global Warming, Pirates, and the Rise of the FSM

The Cincinnati Beacon notices a relationship between global warming and pirates.

General consciousness about global warming seems to have reached a new critical mass, perhaps thanks to Al Gore’s movie and the growing awareness of green technologies.

But has anyone noticed, while more people become aware of global warming and take steps to combat it, that our culture has become filled with even more pirates? Pirates, in many ways, are experiencing a renaissance in America right now.

Read it here.

There were a lot of pirates in the third movie. Johnny Depp was a pirate, Kiera Knightly was a pirate, Orlando Bloom was a pirate, Keith Richards was a pirate, Bill Nighy was a pirate, everyone was a pirate! That many actors dressed as pirates, we should have had a stripper factory appear out of nowhere.

    Also, first post.

The “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies have certainly done wonders in heightening the interest in pirates on this planet. Now if we could let all these people know that they will also be receiving fringe benefits (Friday holidays, the Beer Volcano, the Stripper Factory, etc.), global warming could disappear in a green flash! ;)

Hi, this is my first post here. My name is Shawn. I have just found this site from my friend who is doing an online ministry. He is a good man, retired Military, and wounded in combat in WW2 but still very active. I thought it would be good to ask people here what they really think of global warming. Science is good for many things but in this case there is no real proof that the Earth is not going through one of it’s normal warming phrases. Over the last 6000 years there has been slight gloabal temperature fluctuation, science has shown this. This Earth was created for us and I don’t believe that God would purposely try to sabotage His own work, because this would be contrary to everything He has told us. But I would like to hear your thoughts too on this. Perhaps if you are in doubt about anything I can help to point you in the direction of some answers.

    Hi Shawn,
I have to tell you that I do not believe in god. FSM maybe, god no. I by default do not believe he tells us anything, that was just a bunch of old men trying to set up some rules for a bronze-age tribal society.
And I think that a) yes the earth is going through fases and temperatures fluctuate. but b) humankind is making it worse by pollution and cutting down forests.
Which is dumb and not helping survival in the long run.

  30. 30 - realmenlovechrist - Jun 24th, 2007

Hi, Red Dutch Pasta Wench, have you read the Bible? Because it clearly states that the young and old chose of their own free will to follow the Lord Jesus Christ. The society of that time was not entirely tribal and there were many who were unhappy with the governments. When they found the Lord and lived by His wishes, they were able to be the founders of Christianity which is saving the world. I know that humans are causing pollution, this is very true, but God created the Earth to be a proper home for us and His work cannot be undone by the doings of mortals. This is why I believe that global warming is not the threat it is made out to be, I know some scientists see it that way but we are not privy to knowing the Lord’s work at all times, this is why we have faith.
    In Christ,
    Shawn

Yes, I’ve read it, it is a poor piece of fiction, with loads of propaganda mixed in. And I simply do not have faith in some kind of god, christ, whatever. I also do not believe they will save us from our own stupidity. Believing he will save you from global warming is daft and dangerous too, that way it is clearly no longer your responsibility. Very handy, but too easy a way out in my opinion.
    *
I chose to believe I am responsible formy own actions, if I screw up things will go wrong. There will be no deity (insert deity of choice) to save us and make things right, no matter how hard you might wish to.

  35. 35 - Steriotypical Evironmentalist… - Jun 24th, 2007

Hey guys. I just read your posts on global warming. The whole issue of global warming is quite clear and not even religious. First of all, humans are definitely conrtibuting to global warming via mass combustion of fossil fuels increasing CO2 content in the atmosphere. Nearly anyone who knows anything about science at all can not argue with the fact that CO2 is, in fact a greenhouse gas, meaning, in simple terms, that the more of it there is, the warmer the earth will be. Also, CO2 is water soluble, moreso at lower temperatures. This means that the more CO2 we release into the atmosphere, the warmer it gets, and the warmer it gets, the more CO2 is released from the oceans into the atmosphere. Needless to say, if we don’t do something to stop this, we have a positive feedback loop of increasing temperatures on our hands, AKA a big problem.
Now, to tie into religion; In terms of Christianity, (and keep in mind that I am not a Christian), I hardly believe that any moral God of any kind would want to watch his/her own creation destroyed by another creation (like humans killing off coral reefs and arctic wildlife as a result of global warming). Also, I don’t that any God would want to see his/her own creation kill itself. For, not only does combustion of fossil fuel produce CO2, but also, it produces nitrous oxides which are primary air pollutants (need I say more).
In terms of the FSM, I believe that the correlation between pirates and global warming may be very correct, for in times when there were more pirates, people (like the pirates) traveled by sea, using wind-powered vessels. no true pirate would succumb to the combustion of fossil fuels, so therefore, increasing the number of pirates in the world would decrease fossil fuel combustion and decrease global warming.
I don’t mean to insult any religion, because I don’t think it really matters who believes in what. What does matter is imposing beliefs on others which is morally wrong. Also, insulting someone else’s religion is just cruel. I think we need to all band together, despite religion and do our part to combat fossil fuel combustion.

  39. 39 - realmenlovechrist - Jun 24th, 2007

Hi, Red Dutch Pasta Wench and the others who have answered to my posts. It is true that in many ways we are responsible for our own actions. We can choose to follow Christ’s teachings or we can sin, that is one example. But it is different entirely from the fact that God has a great plan for us and we do not always know what that plan will be. But we Christians do know that if we have faith and honor Christ’s teachings, we will not be destroyed on this planet or go to Hell. This is why I firmly believe that the global warming issue is not something that demands our attention. I am not stating that global warming is not happening at all, but I am saying that God has His reasons for what he does and He loves his children, so He is not about to doom them all to a weather-related death or one that comes out of the consequences of changing weather.

As for the Bible being fiction, I have heard other people say this before but the truth is, did you live 2000 years ago? No, and neither did I. To question God’s word when we were not there to prove or disprove it is blasphamous, in my opinion. Jesus and His Disciples were real, the Crucifixion and Resurection were real, so to say the Bible is fiction is like saying that Da Vinci did not paint the Mona Lisa. We were not there so how can we deny it? I hope this shows a little more clearly that the Bible is God’s word and is an actual account of the wonderful events that took place at that time.

    In Christ,
    Shawn

LONG, BORING, TECHNICAL POST @ RealMenLoveChristians
Seriously, it’s long. You have been warned.
    .
    .
    Hey RMLC… so you’re a young earth creationist huh? Well each to their own I suppose. However let me just sort a few points out;
    .
    1) The Earth is a far bit older than 6000 years old. Try 4.5 billion instead, and you’ll be a fair bit closer. The universe itself is quite a bit older still.
Now, we know this, beyond reasonable doubt, by a variety of ways. I myself am qualified in stating the earths age.
    Why?
    .
In the last 4 days, I have clocked up 40 hours of work on a large machine called the SHRIMP (Sensitive High mass Resolution Ion Micro-Probe), basically a giant mass spectrometer (think CSI). What I’ve been doing for those 40 hours is date rocks, of ages ranging from 450 million years to 2000 million years (that one was a standard, so we have very good understanding of its age and decay processes).
    .
The SHRIMP allows us to compare, with very high detail, the ratio of various lead, uranium and thorium ratios to determine the age of the rock. You see, there are four stable types of lead; one is common, non radiogenic lead, one comes from thorium decay, and the others come from the two isotopes of uranium. By comparing the ratio of any ONE radioisotope with its decay product, we can get an age. With three, we get a very good agreement on that age.
    .
Now, I’ve heard the argument that decay constants can supposedly change, which would through off the ratios. However, there is one problem with that. The SHRIMP has three ratios to measure. For the decay ratios to change to just the right degree for all three relationships to give the SAME AGE is a ridiculous assumption.
    .
The level of chance it would require, especially when decay ratios have never been observed to change (please be aware that even a tiny, infinitesmal shift would be detectable over the course of a couple of years) is so mind boggling remote that I would have a better chance of swimming to the US, picking a door at random, and finding you.
    .
Even if that wasn’t enough, the age calculated coincides well with the geological strata in which the rocks were found. Then there are also observations in other fields (eg astronomy, paleontology, archaeology, biology etc) that all also indicate ages of life, the universe and everything greater then that in the bible.
    .
Hence, the only possible way the earth/universe is 6000 years old, is if some god decided to change all the multitude of data, in a very precise way, to make it appear to look a lot older. Now, if that was the case, surely god would want you to believe the world is actually really really old?
    .
    .
    .
    2) Your basing your assumptions on a text that was not written at the same time as its subject matter. Scholars in the field give the bible being written over a century after the agreed time of Christ. How do they know what happened? None of them were there. Plus, a hundred years is a bloody long time for a story to twist and change.
    .
    .
    .
    3) The bible contains proven falsehoods and self contradictory statements. Just take a look at 1 Kings, 7:23 and 2 Chronicles 4:2, where apparently pi = 3 (it doesn’t, and if you know any basic geometry, you can prove so yourself), or, also in 2 chronicles, 6:36, apparently there is no man which sinneth not, despite several sinless individuals being mentioned in other books (1 John, 3:6/9, 5:18). (King James)
    .
So, if the bible is the infallible word of god, yet the bible is wrong, where does that leave god?
    .
    .
    4) There are other religions, many of which are older than the Abrahamic religions. Moreso, nowhere in the world did christianity arise spontaneously, other than the middle east. The only reason christianity is widespread, is because of the economically driven trade expansion by the western europeans, who brought their culture, and thus their religion, around the globe (something muslims, hindus and buddhists also achieved).
    .
    .
    .
Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying there is no god, just that it is highly unlikely the world is as the bible says it is. I would be perfectly willing to change my opinion if god gave us a sign (say someone parting the oceans. That’d be cool) that could not be otherwise explained. He did it back in the biblical times didn’t he? Why not now?
    .
However, while I’m waiting for that, I’m going to go out and enjoy my, if you’ll excuse the phrase, god-given gifts of observation and common sense and ignore the bollocks that is the bible.

RMLC- So, if teh Lord has a plan for us, and we don’t know what it is….then how do you know trying to stop (lessen) global warming ISN’T the plan? Maybe the big guy wants to see if we’re really willing to put any effort in to solve our own problems instead of handing them all off to them. Never mind what ‘the bible says’, if you’ve got a lot of scientific data telling you something (in this case about global warming), it might be worthwhile to listen, no?

An elaborate spoof on Intelligent Design, The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is neither too elaborate nor too spoofy to succeed in nailing the fallacies of ID. It's even wackier than Jonathan Swift's suggestion that the Irish eat their children as a way to keep them from being a burden, and it may offend just as many people, but Henderson, described elsewhere as a 25-year-old "out-of-work physics major," puts satire to the same serious use that Swift did.
