Small win for Science in the UK

Clearly a result of the London Pirate Demonstration - A recent statement by the UK prime minister includes the following:

The Government is clear that creationism and intelligent design are not part of the science National Curriculum programmes of study and should not be taught as science.

    Wench Octarine (Pratchett fan?)
what englishman would put a perfectly good pie in mushy peas? none, even while drunk. lol
    .
The infamous floater eh? I’ve made some interesting drunk food but you’re right, never that.
I hate mushy peas - which is a bit like hating soccer (hate that too) where I live!

We don’t really have those in QLD. Maybe can get it here and there…but rare.
Think it’s more a SA….maybe WA too(?) tradition. Heard about them, but sure I’ve never seen one. Can’t imagine what technique would be used to eat it :)))

    Just found this on Wiki…..
“In 2003, the pie floater was recognised as a South Australian Heritage Icon by the National Trust of Australia.”
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pie_floater
    .
    Hahahahaha - Heritage Icon?

Don’t laugh…they recently added Cane Toads to that list, much to the outrage of the population. Not sure if they since removed the entry!

I only know one thing as a floater. And that looks about as appetising.
    .
I rest my case. The Aussies are like the Brits on a permanent holiday.
    They are soooo laid back.

  11. 71 Alchemist Jun 24th, 2007 at 6:27 am

I can imagine a bit of outrage - if they carry on like they were you’ll be knee deep in toads in a few years. You’d think myxomatosis would have given folks a heads up.

  12. 72 Wench Beth Jun 24th, 2007 at 7:31 am

“Knee Deep In Toads” — that’d be a great name for a band!

The sad thing is, as laid back as we are, we have one of the highest rates of unpaid overtime in any western country :(
    .
We do know how to drink though, which I suppose is something you might learn on holiday?
    .

Anyway, pie floaters are a sacrilege. Meat pies are awesome, peas are divine, but never shall the twain meet.

just goin through old threads to answer questions
    @ alchemist - yes i am a pratchett fan
and it is infamous… terry got it right on the back of last continent about rincewind being the only person to eat a pie floater while sober…
@ nikkee - technique involves lots of boose. a (mis)quote from john howard - “obviously thousands of gigalitres” lol.

Purchase the Gospel

An elaborate spoof on Intelligent Design, The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is neither too elaborate nor too spoofy to succeed in nailing the fallacies of ID. It's even wackier than Jonathan Swift's suggestion that the Irish eat their children as a way to keep them from being a burden, and it may offend just as many people, but Henderson, described elsewhere as a 25-year-old "out-of-work physics major," puts satire to the same serious use that Swift did. Oh, yes, it is very funny. -- Scientific American
