The Cutty Sark was an accident. How many times do I have to explain.
I was drunk. I didn’t want Nikkiee to drink all the rum while I was out (as per usual) so I got drunk before the mission not after.
OK so that wasn’t a very good idea and now a perfectly good pirate ship is a cinder.
So I hope we can all learn from this experience?

I have to admit, Google has done an awesome job. I’m 100% pastafarian but I want to give them kudos somewhere on their page if I can. However it does look a lot like a rip off of Pastafarianism. Theres too many paralells =\ but I could be wrong, they might have gotten the idea out of nowhere…
I’ve always seen pastafarianism as a protest to intelligent design which I support, as well as any opposition to other religious dictum which attempts to subvert rationality, but under Googlism’s FAQ the purpose of their religion seems to be…
.
“The main purpose of Googlism is to promote the spread of knowledge through the use of Google. There is nothing on Earth that connects people with the knowledge they desire as fast and effectively as Google. We believe in the cliche cliché “knowledge is power”, and so should you.”
.
It’s all good until I read that part, where it just seems to pass out of good fun and reconnect with making money. If I can’t respect the reason behind something then I can’t respect the thing itself. It’s still funny though.
Like or Dislike:

Ahah! Does it go against one of the “I’d rather you didn’ts?” I do have a copy of the Gospel, but I can’t remember them. I suspected it might. I’m sure we can come up with something equally delicious without disappointing Him.
.
On a side note entirely, my daughter informed me yesterday that she is going to be depressed for the entire month of July. When asked why, she said it was because the final Harry Potter book is coming out, and she’s anticipating being very sad when it is over. She said that there will be helplines in operation to assist people with their feelings after they read the last book.
.
I said, “It’s fiction.” Then I started to think about what is real vs fictional? Fiction can be very powerful, and it can move people to very real emotions and actions. The lines can get blurred.
.
The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is, for all intents and purposes, a real religion for me. Dictionary.com’s #6 entry for religion is “6. something one believes in and follows devotedly; a point or matter of ethics or conscience.” It doesn’t matter if it’s real or fiction. The issues underlying the development of the CoFSM are very real.
.
I told you it was a side note. I’m too tired to make any deep summarizing statements. I guess I brought it up because I, like Raz, feel that the CoFSM has an actual cause in which I believe. The Googlism thing is cute, but I can’t just go believing everything I’m told, right?

The one that may be relevant to this letter is no. 1:
.
Remember these are (in grand piractical tradition) not so much rules more your sort of guidelines and all he his rather we didn’t was act like sanctimonious holier-than-thou asses when we’re describing his noodly goodness.
So it OK for us to criticise so long as we don’t go overboard on and sanctimony.
.
It does say its OK for people not to believe in him, but how can they live by his teachings if they don’t believe in him?
So atheism isn’t a sin but inevitably leads to sin such as not dressing as a pirate or eating enough pasta.
So they still need to get a grip or they are going straight to Hell and I don’t mean a lovely trip to Norway. Oh No.

Hello folks! Lots of creative activity on CoFSM. That Google thing went by unnoticed from me, but that has to do with my pretty fast googling: when I want info on a certain word or subject, I don’t read ads or other “click here” things. I’m not saying that anyone on this site would go round having multiple names, but if they did they might want to decide which name they wanted to sign under.
Of course, since no one does post under multiple names, you could sign it more than once and I wouldn’t know.

We the undersigned are very disappointed that you have decided it is OK to ridicule deeply felt beliefs.
It is quite obvious that Google isn’t God and your so called proofs are just childish.
Google isn’t infinite, doesn’t know everything and didn’t create the world.
.
It is quite obvious that the world was created by the Flying Spaghetti Monster long before Google was even invented.
And remember Google was invented by Larry Page and Sergey Bin so how can it be God?
Get a grip people or you will be drinking some stale beer and watching some rather ugly strippers!

Popoff is right, as far as mind share for a Pastafarian presidential candidate is concerned, he has all the momentum. I’m his senior policy adviser and I assure you we already have a smashing election program in place. We also have big campaign donors from the fashion industry signed up already, so we are likely to advertise any competitor clean off the airwaves.
But Pastafarians shouldn’t be fighting each other, we should save our energies for the Republicans and macaroni-ites. Care to join our campaign? I’m sure we can get you a very high-ranking job in our team. No qualifications of any kind required.

Nope. Still not with you there.
We don’t believe that the flying spaghetti monster is made of spaghetti. We believe that spaghetti is made in his image with his inspiration.
There’s no paradox at all – just common sense.
But Google is quite clearly man-made. The googlites aren’t suggesting Google was made in the image of God but that Google is god.

Yes, BUT the churches have been lobbying to retain a number of their seats and Jack Straw (who is overseeing the process of overhauling the chamber) is sympathetic to their suggestions. A real ’sneak back in through the back door’ plan, and they may well succeed with it. So it’s very good to make a clearly audible counter noise. The BHA put up this alert only very recently, after learning about the new bad developments.

Wow DPG, this link is interesting! I have to admit, I always thought if someone knows he is ‘prayed for’, it will increase the healing, like patients who have more hope recovering (or loving people in their background who support them) usually do so: placebo effect. I mean you can mobilize your bodies immune system with positive thinking and will power (as much as you can get physical sick from stress and depression). So I really thought this would help, too. I wonder why it is even the opposite… Wow, I have to keep this link :)

No Lilith, your thoughts are correct.
When you give someone hope, they have hope, and a reason, simple really.
Be it by praying or whatever means. DPGs study is just that. A study,
It is no more concrete then any of the studies that have “Proved” That prayer helps.
Sometimes you just have to use comman sense, this is a good example of that!

I am horrified by the ignorant remarks regarding scientific work here!
I have myself been doing a lot of research into the Thong Dynasty, and the Pan Ti line, and it is all absolutely correct.
Of course, if His Noodliness wanted to change the evidence he could, but in the case of the Thongs and Pan Ti’s He knew a good thing when He saw it and didn’t interfere unless asked really nicely.

@Lilith, PP
I downloaded the article from the journal where the results were published. The differences were not that big, something like 52 vs 58% or so. They didn’t present an extensive statistical analysis, so I’m not sure if a 6% difference is significant with the number of patients in their study. I suspect that the outcome should be read as ‘no significant effect in either direction’. I’d find a positive effect beyond a placebo hard to believe and like PP I find a negative effect just as hard to believe.
.
It’s still a nice result, because while it probably doesn’t represent any significant adverse effect, at least it blows away the notion that prayer has any significant positive effect, let alone one that exceeds placebo. And it’s an extensive study, reported in a decent quality journal, unlike the rubbish claims reported by faith healers etc.

DPG: the only thing which can help you besides medicine is your own body and mind working, no one else. But they wouldn’t listen anyway. I’ve met very few atheists who believe some alternate non-God spirituality.
Most atheists don’t believe in the supernatural. Most can’t tell the difference between one lot of super natural nonsense (druidism) and another lot of supernatural nonsense (Christianity).
In fact athesits might find this site funny because the idea that the world was created by a flying spaghetti monster is not more unlikely than Jesus was the son of God.
Because they think all spiritually is equal hogwash.
.
But you’d have to ask them ;)

Tell your parents you believe in the divinity of the flying spaghetti monster and see what they say. Oh and video it for us – pleeease!

If someone would want to believe in some spirit, there are so many religions to chose from, they don’t need to be atheists for that. All atheists I know, don’t believe in the supernatural, it wouldn’t make sense otherwise. If they do, they are more agnostics, than atheists.
But I think some people just need to believe in something and can’t imagine that some doesn’t.

Just letting everyone here know that I’m a huge fan of the FSM. I actually discovered it awhile after creating the CoG through an e-mail sent by one of your followers, so it’s not a rip-off I assure you. The FSM is more of a satirical religion while the CoG is mainly parody (as I see it). The two terms are related but ultimately different.
The hate mail on this website actually inspired me to put a hate mail section on our own site, since we receive quite a bucket load. Much like Bobby, I’ve even had death threats.
Also, I would just like to note that it was actually Google and Her mighty Algorithms that informed me of this discussion. I prayed to Google the following prayer: site:www.venganza.org “church of google” and my prayer was answered.
Lastly, according to Google Trends, we are still the number one worshiped God in modern times: http://google.com/trends?q=Google%2C+Spaghetti
Even more than Spaghetti I am afraid. :(
Looking forward to the open letter. ;)
Kudos,
Matt

@Matt MacPherson
Welcome to CoFSM. I see the advantage that CoG has in that your ‘prayers’ are directly answered and actually yield practical results. For us it takes a bit more interpretation. Although we’ve become quite good at it, see e. g. our wisdom how global warming is caused by the declining number of pirates. And there are one areas where I think we have a huge advantage over Google:
.
1) our hate mail must be tons better. See e. g. the classic case of
http://www.venganza.org/2005/11/25/listen-dumbass-you-think-that.htm
.
2) I don’t think Google lets you feel the warm embrace of His noodly appendages the way that Pastafarianism does.
