The 4-Hour Workweek

4hourworkweek.jpg

I just read this book titled The 4-Hour Workweek by Tim Ferriss. It’s by far the best business/productivity book I’ve ever read. It’s all about cutting out the garbage that robs your time, and pursuing the things that matter.

I think maybe I liked it so much because I’ve been trying to avoid a “real job” so hard for the last couple years.

There’s a lot of really important, counter-intuitive ideas laid out in this book. Like, for instance: Busyness is a form of laziness to avoid doing the important things you need to do. I have days where I check my email 10+ times a day, and get nothing done.

If you’re interested in this kind of stuff, and I suspect a lot of Pastafarians are, check out Tim’s blog here. Or go buy the book here.

Those of us saddled with real jobs spend our time devising ways to look busy instead of being so. Once you get a real job, you will appreciate the nobility of this calling. By the way, if you can survive without a real job, do it. And please tell me how.

Ok, on the subject of distractions from work, there is a nice collection of atheist quotes on the Irtish atheists site:

    .
    Sample:

We must respect the other fellows religion, but only in the sense and to the extent that we respect his thoery that his wife is beautiful and his children smart H. L. Mencken
    .
“Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I’m not sure about the former.” Albert Einstein
    .
The trues one of all in my opinion:
“True ignorance is not the absence of knowledge, but the refusal to acquire it.” Karl Popper
    .
The fact that a believer is happier than a skeptic is no more to the point than the fact that a drunken man is happier than a sober one George Bernard Shaw

those are so very great. Here’s one:
It was all very well going on about pure logic and how the universe was ruled by logic and the harmony of numbers, but the plain fact of the matter was that the disc was manifestly traversing space on the back of a giant turtle and the gods had a habit of going round to atheists’ houses and smashing their windows.

    .
Can we start a new political party? The Pastafarian Party? For FSM’s sake, the rest of the world has multiple parties (I know, we do too, but there are only two for argument’s sake) so perhaps we can establish the Pastafarian Party before the 2008 elections. I mean, Peter Popoff (our next president) has to have his own party anyway!

Yes, I am a former Marine and probably the one to which you are referring. I can’t imagine there are so many Pastafarians named Josh who are former Marines on this site that you can’t keep track of them all. It’s too bad the Christian fundies got in bed with the GOP. I’d rather they formed their own party and got bent.

No, no, BCA — the vice-president of the Pastafarian Party is extremely important!! You are the right hand man!! (Just look at B*sh and Ch*ney!! Sorry for using profanity there.) Besides, if you don’t accept the VP nomination then it’s going to have to be me or Alchemist… then we’re really talking trouble! (hee hee)

    Hello all,

I wasn’t sure where to post this but since there’s some activity here I thought it’d be best. I submitted some FSM artwork to Mr.Henderson back in Feb. I worked on the artwork over the course of a month and was proud to present the finished piece to him in hopes that he would actually use it for something. After sending emails and even uploading the artwork through his Submit Art option on this site, I never heard a word from him. From what I gather, this is not uncommon because he is very busy. That’s certainly understandable.

What bothers me is that since I stopped attempting to contact him, he has posted other fsm artwork consisting mostly of someone else’s artwork with the fsm Photoshopped in. My ancient piece of “discovered” fsm artwork is all originally and I worked very hard on it. Anyways, I just wanted to vent here I guess.

If you want to see the artwork check it out at http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/50245018/

    Thanks.

Nice list of quotes, good collection of videos, mostly from YouTube, library of relevant literature. Someone from Ireland should find something to like. I have a friend who runs a site with extremely high vols of traffic (happybirthdaytoyou.com) who for 9 yrs has used pair.com with I think NO downtime in the last 5 or 6. I know, not being a business, it may be you’ve got to go with a budget option but thought I’d let you know anyway.

I was thinking… (that’s all the smoke you see in the air ;)… a four-hour work week is not that outrageous and certainly not uncommon, because when you’re in upper management you delegate all the work to the people below you, and you end up having to do very little yourself.
    .
So… how do you skip directly to upper management without having to be a grunt for years??

Their is a brand new Creationist Museum and I have no idea what to wear to the grand opening.
I was debating between full pirate regalia and a something a little bit more subtle like the fsm tee shirt where the speghetti touches a baby

I am really torn on what to wear. I also think the meseum could be a great place to spread his word!!!! They had protesters this weekend and I did not even know.

Seriously though it is scary they have a 60000 ft2 meseum dedicated to this crap presented as science.

I live two hours away and if anybody ever wants to go with me I would love to go and make fun of the place.

well, Wench Beth, if I can arrange a rain transfer, I’ll need an address. Excellent points, DutchPastaGuy. Forgive me my crassness and idiocy. I had a little too much rum.

Four hour week eh? I do barely four hours a day on average. That’s why I’m job hunting. Well that’s not quite true, I’m job hunting for more cash not more hours…I don’t have a wife or kids so I have no reason to want to stay at work all day.

I find it strange that I can spend so much time on my computer and produce very little of any import or creative merit. I have always somewhat operated under the delusion that should I win a large sum of money, it would be the free time it allowed me which would give me the freedom to excel at my creative endeavours. this is quite blatantly not the case or I would be using the vast amount of time I’m not at work to do amazing things. I do so enjoy being board though, I am of the Rincewind type…Exciting times are dangerous and best avoided. That’s not to say I want to avoid excitement by doing boring things. (there’s a subtle difference)

I must prove my pastafarian credentials I feel as this is my first post here.

An elaborate spoof on Intelligent Design, The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is neither too elaborate nor too spoofy to succeed in nailing the fallacies of ID. It's even wackier than Jonathan Swift's suggestion that the Irish eat their children as a way to keep them from being a burden, and it may offend just as many people, but Henderson, described elsewhere as a 25-year-old "out-of-work physics major," puts satire to the same serious use that Swift did. Oh, yes, it is very funny. -- Scientific American
