Religious Discrimination

Bryan Killian, a high school student in North Buncombe, North Carolina was suspended for coming to school dressed as a pirate.

But the disciplinary action has provoked controversy – because the student says that the ban violates his rights, as the pirate costume is part of his religion.

Read about it in the Metro or the Citizen-Times.

This story is blowing up and I’ve been having a lot of problems keeping the server running. It’s currently #1 on Digg and Reddit.

I’ll have some updates and more information about all this soon.

Oh, yeah, I wasn’t saying it was you who was an anarchist, I was just strongly implying it was you. There’s a difference trust me!
    .
I like to think of laws as something to have fun breaking and trying not to get caught doing it. I obviously wouldn’t try to get away with murder or anything, but more minor things that won’t hurt anyone, you know like hacking just for kicks and giggles and not doing anything wrong.

@Pixel – I agree :) Murder is wrong (obviously – serious there). Hacking or Cracking is fun – not wrong. As long as we don’t hurt people ( well – sending a few folks up the wall and on the road to insanity isn’t *always* wrong) then I say go for it!
If we can entertain people at the same time then even better! You have one of my eaddys – drop me a line soon and we can go fishing if you like :) – it’s fun!

@Wench Nikkee “One woman even reported that she and her eleven friends had risen from their chairs and floated around the room.” hahahahhahaha!!!
    .
Her and her eleven friends must be as impressionable as wet clay! It reminds me of a thing Penn and Teller did in their bullshit series. They spray painted a butt-plug silver and showed it to a woman claiming to have been abducted by aliens. She said they’d used it to probe her ear.

hahahahahahaha…just been looking at some of the animals listed on that same site above :))
    .
    Antennalope
    Kingdom: Animalia
    Location found: North America
image Antennalope are a stunning example of cross-species symbiosis. These North-American antelopes have evolved to have metal antennas on top of their heads, instead of the traditional antlers. They roam throughout the American plains, constantly on the move, migrating to where radio signals are weakest. Because their antennas relay radio signals, engineers have been able to use this natural resource to create transcontinental radio networks. The antennalope were featured in a 2003 ad campaign for Nextel long-range walkie-talkies.

And our own Aussie Drop Bears
    Drop Bear
    Kingdom: Animalia
    Location found: Australia
Drop bears are carnivorous, tree-dwelling marsupials found throughout Australia. Their preferred dwelling is eucalyptus trees or gum trees. They are related to koala bears, though larger and equipped with sharp teeth and razor-like claws. Sometimes people refer to them as the koala bear’s evil twin.

Drop bears prefer to feed at night. They wait in trees and then drop down on top of their prey, usually instantly knocking it unconscious. They will then proceed to devour it. They will quite readily attack creatures larger than themselves, including humans.

The only known way to deter a drop bear is to spread toothpaste or vegemite behind your ears and on your neck. It also makes sense not to pitch your tent beneath a tree that contains a drop bear. A good way to find out if a drop bear is in a tree is to lie down beneath the tree and spit upwards. If a drop bear is sleeping up there, it will wake up and spit back.

Australians are known for going to great lengths to make sure that backpacking tourists are aware of the dangers posed by drop bears. Young children attending camp are also frequently warned of this threat to their safety.

    Guys (Long Post Warning),

Here’s my preliminary draft for a letter to Bryan’s school:

    Dear Sir,

America – the land of the free. So long as you’re a Christian. The rest of you we don’t like too much!

It is wrong to discriminate against someone because you don’t like their religious beliefs. Surely you’ve been taught that. Americans go around the world claiming some sort of monopoly on the principles of freedom and at home you behave like this. You should be ashamed of yourself.

I and many of my friends believe it is far more likely that the world was created by a flying spaghetti monster – when a bit drunk or possibly hung-over – in around 2 seconds than by the Judao/ Christian God in six days.

Many eminent scientists around the world agree with us.

You might think what Bryan believes is stupid. A lot of ignorant people who don’t understand our beliefs do. I think your beliefs are stupid and nasty because of the way you treat Bryan. On the other hand Pastafarianism (which is what we call our religion) doesn’t hurt anyone, hate anyone or start wars.

It is spiteful and wrong of you to persecute people for their religion which you might remember from school was what your country was founded on. OK, so you guys have been drifting off that recently, but that’s no excuse. You have an opportunity to make America what it should be not what it is and welcome pupils wearing full pirate regalia and other piratical garments with open arms.

    Regards,

Nice letter. One thing I worry about a bit is that it will be seen as an ‘outside attack’, ‘those foreign bastards telling us how to behave in our own country!’. But you probably shouldn’t change it. They’ll rip it apart most likely, whatever the exact wording.

    @ Captain
I think it’s an excellent letter.
I think it should be sent. The only thing that concerns me, is what DPG just said.
They won’t ingore it because you are an outsider. But they will ignore it because.
“They are right” and “You are wrong”. I wish I had a way to show you how very ignorant these people really are. When you are talking to hardcore baptists, in their own home town. They will tell you the color blue is really red because jesus said it is.

How can you get anything through to a mindset like that?

An elaborate spoof on Intelligent Design, The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is neither too elaborate nor too spoofy to succeed in nailing the fallacies of ID. It's even wackier than Jonathan Swift's suggestion that the Irish eat their children as a way to keep them from being a burden, and it may offend just as many people, but Henderson, described elsewhere as a 25-year-old "out-of-work physics major," puts satire to the same serious use that Swift did. Oh, yes, it is very funny. -- Scientific American
