Religious Discrimination

Bryan Killian, a high school student in North Buncombe, North Carolina was suspended for coming to school dressed as a pirate.

But the disciplinary action has provoked controversy – because the student says that the ban violates his rights, as the pirate costume is part of his religion.

Read about it in the Metro or the Citizen-Times.

This story is blowing up and I’ve been having a lot of problems keeping the server running. It’s currently #1 on Digg and Reddit.

I’ll have some updates and more information about all this soon.

Conservative conformist maybe, yet about to revolutionise the world in 2008 in a way as yet unseen in all of history! How can you call yourself a conformist when your first administration will kick off the most momentous initiative ever undertaken by any US administration?! Are you sure you didn’t just take a little too much of your own miracle water before posting that just there?

I think we’re missing a vital point here.

If all it takes is one eyepatch to disrupt the learning process in our public schools, then we need to re-examine our educational system. If a teacher can’t hold the class’s attention in the face of that, they’re doing something horribly wrong.

“Anything new from my A number one policy writer?”
Well, not on policy, but I have been working hard. I have managed to bring in a series of large campaign donations. I’ve had some closed-door discussions with captains of industry of the jewelry and faishon trade. They are quite extatic about the giraffe initiative. With people developing hugely long necks, they’ll need many, many more diamond necklaces etc to look chique. So designers and manufacturers of scarfs, necklaces are set for a huge boom once the giraffe initiative takes effect. And they’ve put their money where their mouth is. Our campaign fund is overflowing!
    .
Just imagine the effect the giraffe initiative will have on the faishon industry. The catwalks of Paris faishon shows will never look the same again!

Oh my FSM. Sorry to ruin the upbeat mood so fast after posting my optimistic campaign donors news, but there is serious trouble. Apparantly the Greeks are trying to steal my grand giraffe strategy. They’ve developed some intermediate species between man and horse, know as centaur:
    .
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centaur
    .
This is a blatant rip-off, let me quote: “The centaurs descended from Centaurus, who mated with the Magnesian mares.”. If that doesn’t convince you they’re trying to steal my giraffe plan, then what will?
Obviously, they haven’t really caught on to the great idea behind the cross-mating strategy. I mean, horses are hardly any taller than humans. With a horse-length neck noone is going to reach the cooler air in the upper atmosphere once global warming becomes rife. But it does lead to some startling conclusions.
First of all: I fear we may have a spy in our midst. We need to examine the entire Pastafarian congregation to see who the traitorous rice eater is. And since you’re pandering to the more consevative vote, I suggest the death penalty for whoever the spy turns out to be. Not something barbaric of course, we have a peaceful mind set. I think death by the horror of looking at 83-year old strippers with artifical limbs and horribly wrinkled skin is appropriate. Or drowning in stale beer.
Second: we must add Greece to the list of countries destined for carpet spaghetti bombing. The bombers that will hit Australia shortly after you become president should fly on to Greece. Whereas that country was once the cradle of European civilisation, it has obviously lost the embrace of His Noodly appendages. No surprise there, just look at the consumption of rice. While during the days of the ancient Greece there was not a grain of rice to be found in all of Greece, it is now commonly available in many ordinary restaurants in that country. It saddens me to see how deep that country has sunk. I think you’ll agree with me that firm action is required?

    #10: Planetary Alignment Decreases Gravity
“In 1976 the British astronomer Patrick Moore announced on BBC Radio 2 that at 9:47 AM a once-in-a-lifetime astronomical event was going to occur that listeners could experience in their very own homes. The planet Pluto would pass behind Jupiter, temporarily causing a gravitational alignment that would counteract and lessen the Earth’s own gravity. Moore told his listeners that if they jumped in the air at the exact moment that this planetary alignment occurred, they would experience a strange floating sensation. When 9:47 AM arrived, BBC2 began to receive hundreds of phone calls from listeners claiming to have felt the sensation. One woman even reported that she and her eleven friends had risen from their chairs and floated around the room.”

It was ages ago that I read that decreasing gravity thing. Thanks for posting the full quote, nice to reread it. Although it does unfortunately underscore that people will indeed believe anything and attest to having experienced anything. Anyone here with a pair of paralysed legs who wants to go to Lourdes?

An elaborate spoof on Intelligent Design, The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is neither too elaborate nor too spoofy to succeed in nailing the fallacies of ID. It's even wackier than Jonathan Swift's suggestion that the Irish eat their children as a way to keep them from being a burden, and it may offend just as many people, but Henderson, described elsewhere as a 25-year-old "out-of-work physics major," puts satire to the same serious use that Swift did. Oh, yes, it is very funny. -- Scientific American
