Religious Discrimination

Bryan Killian, a high school student in North Buncombe, North Carolina was suspended for coming to school dressed as a pirate.

But the disciplinary action has provoked controversy – because the student says that the ban violates his rights, as the pirate costume is part of his religion.

Read about it in the Metro or the Citizen-Times.

This story is blowing up and I’ve been having a lot of problems keeping the server running. It’s currently #1 on Digg and Reddit.

I’ll have some updates and more information about all this soon.

@Enya – UK’s going in the same direction :( – Biometric ID cards, interviews for passports, two party politics – I can’t comment on the US, never lived there – I can comment on the UK though. I HATE the way we are going!
What was it that Hitler used to rally the people?
    What are we doing now?

OK – I’m gonna be flamed for this (like I care) Do we know what the school’s rules said?
Do they specify a uniform? OK – this is in the States – but if you sign up for a school you agree to their rules and regulations – wearing an eye patch – ok! I was told to remove my sunglasses once (I was only wearing them to piss the staff off).
    .
Question – In the UK an unfair dismissal case was overturned recently – muslim teacher (TA – I think) refused to remove her Niqab – case relied on the fact that the eyes are a major source of communication!
    .
In the US are muslims allowed to wear full niqab? are xtians allowed to wear ‘visible’ religious symbols?
Sorry folks – you know I’m on your side but I won’t jump on a bandwagon without the full details!
    .
    Flame On! Just kidding.
From everything I’ve read so far, it is just a public school here in the states.
It probably has a minor dress code i.e. Girls, no six-inch heels, no mini skirts above the waist, and yes, I hate to say this… Girls no Spaghetti strap halter-tops.
Boys; no bandanna’s or hats, or stupid baggy pants showing your ass crack, no gang colors.
Those are just basic that I can think of. Each school has a right, to implement their own dress code, this is done by the school board of said school (which is comprised mostly of parents) voting on how their kids should dress.
    .

Again, from what I’ve read so far, this school had a basic dress code.
This kid wore an eye patch, to say that he could.
He did this to say, if you can wear a cross on your neck to show your faith,
I can wear a patch on my eye to show mine.
In my kid’s school, this would be acceptable.
The teachers would laugh about the one eyed handicap.
    .
As far as the muslims and their full niqab, etc. etc.
If they have a large enough public school system in their neighborhood they certainly have a right to vote such dress in. This is a touchy subject since 9/11, understandable.
It’s not illegal for them to be in public dressed like this (although depending where they were, they could be mobbed).
Again, in my kid’s school, if you showed up in headgear, it would fall under the no headgear rule.
Ok, I could go on and on here, but I’ve gone over my post limit so I’ll shut up.
I tried not to flame you too badly. :)

To PP: I am from Europe and I live in the US for a few years, so I can tell you: it really is worse than I expected! Don’t get me wrong, there are some good things and some people really do think, but there isn’t much freedom or democracy here. If you would live in another civilized country for a while, you would understand. Your president is always preaching democracy and is acting like the dictator of the world. The USA doesn’t approve the world justice court (democracy??) and the USA and Somalia are the only countries in the world where they can have death penalty on children. And you can cry out Nazi-paroles, but you are not allowed to criticize the country (either love it or leave it! Hello, freedom??). I don’t want to be rude, I am a guest here, but you should start looking beyond your borders to change things, you can’t just lean back and stuck to your old ‘it used to be meant…’ structure. Things are changing to the worse and you have to act now. And just the two options to vote… c’mon!!
    .
Well, I’m not going to argue, as I’ve only lived here.
I do love my Country though, and think I’ve mostly addressed you in my previous post. This administration has made a mess, as I’ve said.
I’ve lived here forty-four years, so maybe your being here only a couple of years, you have no idea how it used to be?
    Peace,
    Ramen

I don’t know any country with a complete working system, but you should notice it, that’s the point. Don’t have a solution, sorry, not until I find this damn genie-lamp. But I think the countries (especially Europe) should work together instead of mocking or blaming each other or discuss the curving of bananas. We’re all on one Planet, that’s a sad fact and I loath people who feel superior over another, is it religion or country or whatever.

I wouldn’t say I love my country, cause being born there was just a coincidence. But everybody should care about his country, that’s for sure! But I love this planet… oh, that sounds so hippie, I am a sceptical realist, I guess, not a blind pacifist… but I guess you get the point.

Peter – It’s a bit more over here – the right to wear religious articles. It’s a major deal!
It’s a situation that cuts me in two (not literally :))
    .
On one side is the right for an individual to express their own faith:
On the other is the right for others to express their disagreement with said individuals faith.
    .
I believe religion, no matter what that may be (Catholics, Protestants, Muslims, Scientologists, Evangelical Floorarians, Pastafarians etc) has NO place in any education system! Ok – maybe RS! No more though!
    .
NO faith based articles should be allowed – including ours!
I do understand the reasons though. If one is allowed, then all should be! I’m a non person

An elaborate spoof on Intelligent Design, The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is neither too elaborate nor too spoofy to succeed in nailing the fallacies of ID. It's even wackier than Jonathan Swift's suggestion that the Irish eat their children as a way to keep them from being a burden, and it may offend just as many people, but Henderson, described elsewhere as a 25-year-old "out-of-work physics major," puts satire to the same serious use that Swift did. Oh, yes, it is very funny. -- Scientific American
