Bryan Killian, a high school student in North Buncombe, North Carolina was suspended for coming to school dressed as a pirate.
But the disciplinary action has provoked controversy – because the student says that the ban violates his rights, as the pirate costume is part of his religion.
Read about it in the Metro or the Citizen-Times.
This story is blowing up and I’ve been having a lot of problems keeping the server running. It’s currently #1 on Digg and Reddit.
I’ll have some updates and more information about all this soon.

Hey guys, just checking up on all of you. I do certainly hope that I didn’t miss any fundies while I was gone, it’d be a real bummer.
Nothing interesting happening, eh? Petey can let me know when stuff’s going on I suppose.
Good luck not doing anything!

There was one “true believer” here in your absence. One shot wonder though :(
You always manage to just miss them lately :)

For a long time i have wished that a group of jehovah’s wittnesses, mormons or pretty much any other fundy group would show up at my door and “show me the error of my ways”. I would really like to argue with them. I guess there are not enough of those fundie missionaries going around in Finland.
.
I bet though, that they will show up at my door when I’m just about to unzip a beatiful woman’s pants. That would be most fitting of jehovahs or mormons i think.

@Third Eye Patch – thanks for the link http://puritanbob.blogspot.com/2007/01/fundamentalist-atheism.html
Hilarious stuff! I’m just loving the arguments!
.
“But what of ethics? How is ethics/morality accounted for in an atheistic/evolutionary philosophy?” Am I to conclude that this person is saying that the existence of the christian god must be accepted for the sake of christian ethics?
.
“Yes it is true people flew a plane into the WTC on 9/11 in the name of God but the atheist has no objective footing on which to stand where he can say: ‘9/11 was immoral!’ The atheist can an does say things like this all the time, but I would submit in doing so he is being inconsistant with his worldview and really borrowing from my objective Christian ethics.” Must stop rolling on the floor first… then comment… stomach cramps…
Wow – so the hindus, buddhists, taoists and muslims that condemned the attacks were also borrowing for christian ethics – which clearly is the only system of ethics on the planet. And there are no non-religius systems of ethics, right? Maybe ill just write 2 words on “The Puritan’s Sword” website – Immanuel Kant. That might be a good place to start.
.
“In the Christian worldview ethics reflect the character of the Triune God revealed in His word, thus they are as unchanging and absolute as His character is.”
Ever since these wars by the Bush administration started, I have had this picture in my head of a devout christian going to his preast and asking: ‘Was he really serious about this “turning the other cheek” and “doing unto others as you would have done unto you” -part? And what about that “do not judge so that you yourself would not be judged”?’ Christians for military action and punishments for immoral behaviour are just strange ideas in my view.
.
“Likewise on what footing can one society critique another societies morality if morality is based upon majority consensus within the particular society within which one resides?” Again thanks @Third Eye Patch – this is just too funny. I just can’t stop laughing at this idea that it is not problematic to judge for example islamic societies’ morals as long as you yourself have christian morals. Which are – of course – superior.
.
I might have to watch the videos too… When I am in need of some comedy. Cannot take any more at the moment – the article cited above was already too much!

Has anyone seen this? At 49mins Richard Dawkins, the prominent scientist-atheist, admits that “we might all be wrong about the flying spaghetti monster”. Clearly touched by the noodly appendage. I see him wearing the full pirate regalia any day now. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qR_z85O0P2M

To be honest, don’t watch this clip. Watch in stead part 1 of the same session, which is much more humourous in addition to being somewhat educational as well. If you are bored and have 30 minutes to fill that is.

@ Retartds – a religion having something to do with a pirate is just as valid – if not more – as one having something to do with wine and bread being the blood and flesh of someone from 2000 years ago (and it’s far less cannibalistic).

A pirates definiton
a. One who robs at sea or plunders the land from the sea without commission from a sovereign nation.
b. A ship used for this purpose.
2. One who preys on others; a plunderer.
3. One who makes use of or reproduces the work of another without authorization.
4. One that operates an unlicensed, illegal television or radio stations is
So I don’t think that is just as valid as commuion
com·mun·ion
1. The act or an instance of sharing, as of thoughts or feelings.
2. Religious or spiritual fellowship.
3. A body of Christians with a common religious faith who practice the same rites; a denomination
I wonder with one sounds more holy pirates that steal or commuion an act of worship. Communion wins by a long shot.

@Retartds – Just because you don’t think plundering and stealing is an act of communion, doesn’t mean it’s not. Most Christians don’t think Jews are holy–in fact they murder them by the thousands–and yet, according to the Bible, they’re Gods chosen people, just like pirates are His chosen people

@ Retartds – Your argument is well phrased, articulate, and polite. Thank you for that! We appreciate posts like that on this site (at least I do). I would just like to point out that the truth is only the truth from a certain point of view. Your truth about communion is valid, and so is mine. Also, “one who preys on others” from your pirate description could be used to describe a huge number of ministers/priests/imams etc. Or, just Catholicsm in general (I was raised Catholic so I know at least something about it) which was essentially created in the 3rd century AD for the specific purposes of creating Constantine’s empire.
Again, thanks for your post.

Usually, schools enact certain rules to follow. Some rules require that the student(s) do not wear anything out of the norm to the extent that it would detract attention from the usual school activities.
He may be justified by saying that it’s his religion, but it goes to show how pure blatant ignorance and disregard for foolishness can “harm” people.
Having a smirk on your face while dressing in a pirate suit to “combat the forces of religion” will not get you anywhere. Doing something productive might help.

This is a serious issue and anybody who thinks differently should really educate themselves a little bit better.
The school is certainly in the wrong here. Why is it okay to infringe on the religious rights of this student? Simply because they are not widely believed? I’ll play devil’s advocate for a second and say that the school is in the right. If that is the case then all children wearing crosses, a yamika or anything else related to any other religion should also be suspended from school, as this seems only fair. Truly what is going on in this country? I know that most of us see that horrible things that happen, and yet it continues. Truly this kind of thing sickens me: to live in the “land of the free”…
You are free as long as you believe what everybody else does, or if you have money and influence.
Truly a sad state of affairs.
My heart goes out to you.

I just posted, but I have to post again, I am sure someone has already covered this but I don’t have the time to read every post and in case it was left out I feel it needs to be said.
Setting aside everything to do with religion or the stifling thereof.
It’s an eye patch.
that’s it, just an eye patch.
So it’s a little bit different from the norm.
It’s a little weird, and well just plain different.
I was always told that it was people’s differences that make us special and make this world so great. I was told this by teachers, parents, friends, partners, nearly anybody that I can think of.
Yet public school’s do their best to stifle creativity
They do their best to breed our youth to never question anything.
All they are really trying to do is fit you into a mold so you’ll be a good worker drone that never starts any problems.
Think of the greatness that the world would have already missed out on had “different” and “strange” people been stifled as much as our youth is today in this country.
And it makes me want to vomit.

Personally, I think that it was a great idea!! As people have already said, it’s just an eye patch, there should be no problem with it. It’s just like christians wearing cross necklaces, nobody has a problem with that do they?? I think that the school is COMPLETELY discriminating our religion. I’d also just like to say Brian Wilde “Everytime I’ve seen him, he’s not once had the eye patch on” he doesn’t HAVE to wear the eye patch ALL the time & you probably don’t see him THAT often, seeing as he isn’t YOUR friend. Also “This is ridiculous and I agree with the school 100%”- by this, you are saying that you agree with the discrimination!! Anyway, I better go before I get carried away lol. Ramen xx

RAmen to everything here!
iv been following pastafarianism for a while now but iv never really said anything about it…til now…first off i agree with all those who are on the side of Bryan. he shold be commended for his bravery. you shouldn’t be embarrassed for your religion. in my school, all “headgear” is banned except that which is prescribed by religion (to quote the morning announcements) :) the rules are broken for religion then there is no limit. if they can only allow religious hats then the can allow anything that is a religious symbol. specifically in this case pirate regalia…
iv finally found my religious niche

Now, I’m not a great Pastafarian, in fact i barely count as one, but I can see discrimination based on religion as well as the next guy. This wonderful man dressing up as a pirate is a visionary for us all, so the next time you see somebody wearing a cross, please, PLEASE, report them for wearing something that is distracting you academically. I believe we can all learn a lesson in this, in fact not only we, but everybody on earth can learn something from this school. What we can learn is that some people are idiots. The assistant-principal is too indulged in her own religion (probably christianity) to realize that there are other people on this earth. And of course somebody that delusional shouldn’t be administration at a school teaching the children of our future! When a politician does something illegal people get mad, they try(and sometimes succeed) to get them out of office. I personally think this is the only reasonable punishment possible for this administrative power. When a student wears a cross a people probably think “Oh, he/she is Christian” but suddenly when a boy wears an eye patch to support his religion he is somehow breaking the rules or distracting people in class? This boy’s right to a religion, and his freedom of speech have been severely violated, and he deserves to somehow get retribution. His Noodly Appendages will save all.
sincerely,
Jon Dixon
