Religious Discrimination

Bryan Killian, a high school student in North Buncombe, North Carolina was suspended for coming to school dressed as a pirate.

But the disciplinary action has provoked controversy – because the student says that the ban violates his rights, as the pirate costume is part of his religion.

Read about it in the Metro or the Citizen-Times.

This story is blowing up and I’ve been having a lot of problems keeping the server running. It’s currently #1 on Digg and Reddit.

I’ll have some updates and more information about all this soon.

Hey guys, just checking up on all of you. I do certainly hope that I didn’t miss any fundies while I was gone, it’d be a real bummer.
Nothing interesting happening, eh? Petey can let me know when stuff’s going on I suppose.
    Good luck not doing anything!

    Hi Pixel :)
“I do certainly hope that I didn’t miss any fundies while I was gone”
There was one “true believer” here in your absence. One shot wonder though :(
You always manage to just miss them lately :)

    @Wench Nikkiee
Damnit, I always do don’t I? Oh well, the one I found is ultra-conservative (and I mean like… CONSERVATIVE!!!) and not too bright so he should be perfect for our entertainment.

For a long time i have wished that a group of jehovah’s wittnesses, mormons or pretty much any other fundy group would show up at my door and “show me the error of my ways”. I would really like to argue with them. I guess there are not enough of those fundie missionaries going around in Finland.
    .
I bet though, that they will show up at my door when I’m just about to unzip a beatiful woman’s pants. That would be most fitting of jehovahs or mormons i think.

@Third Eye Patch - thanks for the link http://puritanbob.blogspot.com/2007/01/fundamentalist-atheism.html
Hilarious stuff! I’m just loving the arguments!
    .
“But what of ethics? How is ethics/morality accounted for in an atheistic/evolutionary philosophy?” Am I to conclude that this person is saying that the existence of the christian god must be accepted for the sake of christian ethics?
    .
“Yes it is true people flew a plane into the WTC on 9/11 in the name of God but the atheist has no objective footing on which to stand where he can say: ‘9/11 was immoral!’ The atheist can an does say things like this all the time, but I would submit in doing so he is being inconsistant with his worldview and really borrowing from my objective Christian ethics.” Must stop rolling on the floor first… then comment… stomach cramps…
Wow - so the hindus, buddhists, taoists and muslims that condemned the attacks were also borrowing for christian ethics - which clearly is the only system of ethics on the planet. And there are no non-religius systems of ethics, right? Maybe ill just write 2 words on “The Puritan’s Sword” website - Immanuel Kant. That might be a good place to start.
    .

“In the Christian worldview ethics reflect the character of the Triune God revealed in His word, thus they are as unchanging and absolute as His character is.”
Ever since these wars by the Bush administration started, I have had this picture in my head of a devout christian going to his preast and asking: ‘Was he really serious about this “turning the other cheek” and “doing unto others as you would have done unto you” -part? And what about that “do not judge so that you yourself would not be judged”?’ Christians for military action and punishments for immoral behaviour are just strange ideas in my view.
    .
“Likewise on what footing can one society critique another societies morality if morality is based upon majority consensus within the particular society within which one resides?” Again thanks @Third Eye Patch - this is just too funny. I just can’t stop laughing at this idea that it is not problematic to judge for example islamic societies’ morals as long as you yourself have christian morals. Which are - of course - superior.
    .
I might have to watch the videos too… When I am in need of some comedy. Cannot take any more at the moment - the article cited above was already too much!

PS. Posted “Immanuel Kant” at the puritanian website.

  11. 311 Red DutchPasta Kidd Apr 11th, 2007 at 6:42 am

Yes, you should take these websites a bite at the time. Or you’ll get an overdose of fundie-rubbish in your system, that might be fatal and cause death by laughing.

  12. 312 Rowdy Wench Apr 11th, 2007 at 7:12 am

@ RDPK and C 5 M - I can think of worse ways to die than death by laughing! :) Of course, the fundie-rubbish is toxic and therefore very painful…

  13. 313 Kaxisomo Apr 11th, 2007 at 7:57 am

Um hey… did any of you guys get an email about some lady they’re trying to canonize over in Europe? I kinda glanced through it before condemming it to spam, but I was wondering if it might be a result of posting my email here…
    .
Alchemist, PP-off, or anyone else in the disciples that has posted an address here… any help?

  15. 315 Pixel Pop Apr 11th, 2007 at 9:56 am

WTF? I could have sworn I just made a post!

  16. 316 Pixel Pop Apr 11th, 2007 at 11:26 am

I’ve made three posts people, let me know if you’ve seen them.
    Anywho…
That fundy guy I was talking about didn’t feel like coming over to get humiliated. I have some stuff that he wrote about himself, it’s pretty funny. If you wanna check it out, email me at dr.mcqueer@gmail.com

    Send it to me, Pixely!

  18. 318 Rowdy Wench Apr 11th, 2007 at 11:45 am

@ Pixely - Hi! Can’t stay, but wanted to let you know that I have trouble with some of my posts not going as well. I have started copying everything before I click on Submit just in case. Sometimes they end up going twice…but at least I don’t lose stuff any more.
Too bad on the fundy - he might have learned something! Good try though, Hero!

  19. 319 Alchemist Apr 11th, 2007 at 12:17 pm

@Jingles - yup, I got that one too - so did Peter. Hahahaha :)

Has anyone seen this? At 49mins Richard Dawkins, the prominent scientist-atheist, admits that “we might all be wrong about the flying spaghetti monster”. Clearly touched by the noodly appendage. I see him wearing the full pirate regalia any day now. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qR_z85O0P2M
    .
To be honest, don’t watch this clip. Watch in stead part 1 of the same session, which is much more humourous in addition to being somewhat educational as well. If you are bored and have 30 minutes to fill that is.

Purchase the Gospel

An elaborate spoof on Intelligent Design, The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is neither too elaborate nor too spoofy to succeed in nailing the fallacies of ID. It's even wackier than Jonathan Swift's suggestion that the Irish eat their children as a way to keep them from being a burden, and it may offend just as many people, but Henderson, described elsewhere as a 25-year-old "out-of-work physics major," puts satire to the same serious use that Swift did. Oh, yes, it is very funny. -- Scientific American
