The FSM Chat experiment was a success – over 200 registered users in the first 24 hours. But, it was too slow and it was killing the server. So I’m going to install a faster, better chat service. I’m hoping that it will be up by tomorrow.

An elaborate spoof on Intelligent Design, The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is neither too elaborate nor too spoofy to succeed in nailing the fallacies of ID. It's even wackier than Jonathan Swift's suggestion that the Irish eat their children as a way to keep them from being a burden, and it may offend just as many people, but Henderson, described elsewhere as a 25-year-old "out-of-work physics major," puts satire to the same serious use that Swift did. Oh, yes, it is very funny. -- Scientific American

What complimentary kind words…a sincere thank you Thumper
My fear is not so much of the wenches, more based on the implied demeanor (misdemeanor?) of that purple cat. I’ve heard it has very sharp claws and gets rather nasty at times……brrrr….

“Thanks for the Dawkins B-Day link! Looking through the comments and pictures that people sent in almost made me a little teary eyed.”
.
I had DPG to thank for reminding me Nick :)) I visit the site fairly regularly (once every couple of days at least) checking out the articles posted, but must admit the Birthday had slipped my mind.
.
The sheer number of sincere good wishes speaks for itself…but to read through some of them…… both on the main page and on the B’day wishes list (3425 names last I checked)…..well yeah pretty hard not to get emotional…in the very best way.
.
Everyone check it out and leave a birthday wish if you are so inclined and haven’t already done so.

Ship’s Cat never tried to eat me, so if he could overcome his natural instinct to chase the little boird then Thumper should at least make some effort to stop locking him up all the time, even if cats and wabbits aren’t natural friends

Who cares? They taste the same, I’m told: only a small difference in the roundness of the ribs makes the difference. That’s why you should always buy a wabbit with the head still on, or at least the paws.

@ Wench Nikkiee – GAH! Oh my FSM… I particularly like this statement: “God had given men and women free will to choose whether “spontaneously to accept salvation … the Christian faith is not imposed on anyone, it is a gift, an offer to mankind”.” Is that all my free will is good for? And what kind of free will is it if not choosing Christianity has me burn in hell? Oh well, in the sage words of Billy Joel, “I’d rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints, the sinners are much more fun.”

Hi Rowdy :)
I don’t follow what’s happening too in depth on the religion side of things.
(erm…I haven’t read the book…and I’ve only seen a few of the old movies :)) Mostly I follow the YEC/IDiot pseudo science. But I was kinda under the impression, due to their trashing of Limbo, that the Vatican was moving away from literal conception of that book/movie! Now I worry that there are enough of the literalists to be bringing pressure? I don’t know enough about the politics of religion (other than Govts. latching on to the spin doctoring and moral points scoring offered by religion, in a bid to be seen as morally honest???) but that news piece came as a bit of a shock. Still after I thought on it for a few minutes, I thought it could be a good thing. Makes the Vatican look as bad as the “lost the plot” fundies? I hope!

@ Wench Nikkiee – Hiya! Sorry – should’ve said that earlier…I am a recovering Catholic, thank the FSM! But, I have gone out of my way to know nothing about what they are doing for long enough now that I haven’t a clue! Sorry to not be able to help! The Catholic Church is certainly very politicized, and very powerful. I agree that this could be a good thing. I can’t imagine that most people could agree that hell is an actual place, and anyway how in the world does this guy know? Has he been there for FSM’s sake? Ranting a bit…*Rowdy takes deep breath*
I hear Norway is beautiful!

Have any of you seen the Belief-O-Matic? It asks you 20 questions and then says which religion you are most like. The blasphemous part is that there’s no Church of the FSM! Though everyone in my family got Unitarian Universalist, maybe that’s the Church of the FSM in noodly disguise. Google Belief O Matic; it’s fun!

My paternal grandmother was a staunch Catholic…apparently. After my father flew the nest, he would had nothing to with it. However there is still a strong enough contingent of involved followers amongst a few of the rellies. They don’t preach or do the “holier than thou” though. It seems a lot of recovered Catholics do have trouble shaking off the guilt trip….in my experience. That never seemed the case with my father…he was more *shrug* :))

Hey, Gnocci Man and Storm Petrel, let’s start up our own sect. I took the quiz and got 100% secular-humanist as well. But I, too, am personally offended that Pastafarianism was not listed because I would have received a 101% score in that case ;)

2. Unitarian Universalism (94%)
3. Mainline to Liberal Christian Protestants (88%)
4. Reform Judaism (84%)
5. Orthodox Quaker (84%)
6. Neo-Pagan (83%)

24. Jehovah’s Witness (41%)
25. Christian Science (Church of Christ, Scientist) (40%)
26. Eastern Orthodox (38%)
27. Roman Catholic (38%)

How the heck did Quaker get into there? According to this I’m not as Jewish as I thought I was! Heh. (And apparently there’s more Scientologist in me then there is Roman Catholic. Go figure!)

I had secular humanism (100%) on top, second was Unitarian Universalism, third non-theist (94%).
Bottom with 2% are Jehovas. Whooopie! Then 7% for 7th day advenstist (no clue about them) and than 15% for Roman Catholic. And I was born RC. I’m glad that a unbiased computer tell me I’ve managed to shed my bad religious past pretty well.

You know what bugged me about that quiz, though? The last options for the first4 or 6 questions was too ambivalent. There was no box that just said “I don’t believe, period”. The closest was “I don’t believe in an afterlife. Or I’m not sure. Or it doesn’t matter.” Well, excuse me, I am pretty sure I know what I believe, and it does matter to me that they are turning the atheist response into a quasi-”seeking” answers thing.
.
Yes, I am over-sensitive. I am secular humanist, with my next highest being neo-pagan at 89%. I checked the unapplicable box for the first grouping of questions.

Problem with these quizzes is the inevitable “what answer should I give to get the result I want?” – Mood plays a part too. I think mine just says that I don’t know – I’m not certain of anything. I don’t mind that position but it does make shaving interesting :))

Don’t agree. I’ve seen nothing from you that proves nor illustrates this. Unless you mean “Pissy Bitch-ian towards myself because I’m to sensitive to other people’s stupidity, and frustrated by my not being able to put a halt at it!” Or is it your well-developed sense of humour that covers the whole “Pissy Bitch-ian” thing? ha ha ha ha… NO, I don’t think I’m really really a bitch. I do get pissy once a month, though. I just wish I WAS a bitch, to be honest. In a good way… like, more able to express myself and less scared of other people’s opinions. I’m lacking confidence in that area a little bit. So I tend to try and get my point across my making fun of myself a lot. =)
