Hahaha. I loved the “Satanic Verses”. Bought it (”under the counter!”) when the Pope declared himself against it too ;) Really, even in Belgium you couldn’t buy the book overtly. But each librarian had it, only they didn’t expose it… The “verses” thing is only a tiny part of the book. Love Rushdie’s telling…

I wonder if you’re only supposed to pray for things that have a chance of working. Like, should you pray for universal happiness? Unlikely that it will actually occur. But maybe if enough people prayed, we’d have universal happiness and we could save Satan’s soul. Ya think?

That would lead us back to the (old?) question of “When somebody prays for somebody who doesn’t believe, does that help? Does it make a difference if the “praying target” is or isn’t believing. Or if the praying person knows or doesn’t know that the “target” isn’t believing?”
I posted this on the forum, and got some interesting answers, including links to articles about “scientifically controlled” praying for cardiac patients. Yes, the whole placebo thing, but with prayers instead of pills…

Dawkins mentions such things in his book. But here’s a pray for Satan thread. Maybe this is a source for fundies? And by the way, the first answer is as you say. Satan already knows God exists so praying that he know God exists is useless. But suppose that praying itself convinces Satan that people really care about him. Maybe he’s just really misunderstood and needs our love. He should be able to hear those prayers too, right? I mean God would pass them on, wouldn’t he?

I think have more existence issues with Satan than I do with God.
Suppose God created the universe. Then was Satan around before that or did he create Satan with the universe. Were there two beings of godlike power?
He wouldn’t have created Satan with the world, would he? So maybe Satan had existed an infinite amount of time like God and they got tired of playing chess (or the upstairs version). So God decides that he’s going to make a universe and instead of leaving Satan out of it, he decides to give him a role.
He had that choice, right? We aren’t the only ones with free will. Or was Satan so powerful he could not be excluded from any simulation that God wanted to do?
Maybe he shouldn’t have created a world if he knew Satan was going to mess with it. Maybe, being an intelligent guy, he could have found a way to keep Satan out or maybe he should have just had it out with him, once and for all. See who’s boss. And then create the world you want.
You want a world with free will and the possibility of evil? You don’t need Satan for that. All you need for the possibility of evil is a reasonable amount of stupidity. We got gobs of it here.
I won’t again refer to it’s major representative.
Anyway, the whole Satan character makes no sense if you believe in a all good all powerful God. Unless the higher reality is just as messy with characters as the ancient gods were.

Oh no… so tempting. I was trying to stay away from trolling for a few days, because I could feel it starting to dumb me down. My spelling and grammar was actually starting to be affected by it!! But… hmmm… I bet Christa would know.

The reason I ask is, if you ask some of the more “modern” Christians, (the ones who don’t walk around like 10 pounds of brimstone in a 5 pound bag of fire), they say that hell is really just being seperated from God. So wouldn’t it follow that evil, which is supposedly what Satan is, and apparently what leads to hell, would be the absence of a soul?

Bill. God created Satan according to the Bible anyway. He was the angel of light - the highest of all the angels. He was beautiful. He grew prideful however and questioned gods divine right to be in charge. So he led a revolt amongst the angels - those that followed Lucifer are now called demons.
I think it’s in Genesis but not too sure and too tired to check it now.
