Yeah, I know it’s satire

Yeah, I know it’s satire.  I’m an atheist, and I hate stupid, narrow-minded fundies as much as anyone.  But honestly, this joke has run its course.  People’s lives can actually get ripped apart by Pastafarianism, though I know you don’t really believe it.  Not as many as by organized religion, but organized religion can’t really be stopped except by massive revolution, whereas Pastafarianism can be.  It was funny for a while, but you don’t seem to realize (actually, some of you probably do) that no one cares anymore, that all the hate mail is faked.  Stop laughing at the rest of the world, and realize that you’re not better than the people who post your hatemail; it’s a /joke/.  And your religion has lost its humor.  So shut up when talking to people you think are stupid.  That was the /real /meaning of the “atheists are so arrogant” post.  He was pointing out that /you/ were so arrogant in believing that there were really that many stupid people in the world.  Some of you, I am now sure, know that all this hatemail is faked.  Tell the others, and get everyone to stop acting such a fool.

RAmen,
bbctol

Sorry if I don’t reply often, or very quickly. Being on the bottom rung of UMass Physics, I’m using a pentium II (until I can afford to buy my own computer), and I am a TA for 4 lab sections, which means 80 lab reports to grade every 2 weeks.

Wait! I just found this on Wikipedia! Somebody confirm this please!

“On the 13th of February, 2007, the Kansas State Board of Education approved a new curriculum which removed any reference to Intelligent Design as part of science. In the words of Dr Bill Wagnon, the board chairman, “Today the Kansas Board of Education returned its curriculum standards to mainstream science”. The new curriculum, as well as a document outlining the differences with the previous curriculum, has been posted on the Kansas State Department of Education’s website.[1]”

Thanks! I actually looked further into the matter and found the actual report by the Kansas School Board (why did i put that in caps?), where it said that they no longer teach creationism…HOWEVER, they are VERY critical of science, the scientific method, and its conclusions in their curriculum plan laid out in their standard. Read it for yourself (or just skim it to the good parts, especially p. x to xiii.

I see your point, and it is a good one. maybe we shouldn’t make fun of fundamentalists. After all, they have their own (sometimes “stupid”) beliefs and we should respect that. But i resent the fact that you think FSM can rip lives apart. If you are stupid enough to believe in a flying spaghetti monster (which i obviously am, being a pastafarian COUGH COUGH) then either you deserve whats coming to you, or you will already believe in a “more plausible” (i use this term advisedly…) religion. And the reason I personnaly am pastafarian is becuase i believe that I am doing my part to show that religion is fake and that it hurts lives. FSM does not hurt lives.

Anyone here, don’t worry. The people here are either Atheists who want to ridicule religion, or just people who want have a funny religion to laugh about. The truth is no one here actually believes that a flying spaghetti monster is real. The reason they have your childish like drawing is because it is showing this is a joke. The creator most likely is an atheist. I didn’t waste my time looking if he was or not. So no one actually believes in this anyways. However, for you atheists and people who pretend to believe in this person, if you’re going believe in religion, try Christianity. You atheists are logical, right? You believe that when you die, you simply die. However, even though their is some proof of intelligent design, why not try Christianity. You might as well cover all the bases, or get the most chances by covering them all. Not on something that has no chance. And I’m not going to bother reading replies, so this is all I had to say.

“why not try Christianity. You might as well cover all the bases, or get the most chances by covering them all.” If that’s the case, why not try Hinduism, Islam, etc., too? I’m sure the deities of all those religions, if they existed, would be delighted to know you joined up to “cover all the bases” rather than from genuine belief.

“And I’m not going to bother reading replies,” probably because you’re afraid to consider alternative to your own arrogance.

Hi, My names Leah and I’m a exchristian, So I gave your religion a try for most of my young life, until I was 17 old (clean for 4 years, go me) and I have a few points to share with you. Christainity, in its many forms is based on a book of nonsense, and this most likely goes for other religions too, but I’m going to stick the one I know, the main reason I gave up on religion and the whole god thing is because it makes no reasonable sense, A God who is Just and Merciful? Who is kind and good but is responisble for satan and the state of sin we are in?(apparently, I don’t feel all to sinful, but hey thats just me) Who is perfect but jealous? that just a start both testaments are full of morally deplorable behavior both from god and jesus and their spokespeople, bigotry, us and them thinking, slavery, sexism, rape and child abuse is all ok in the bibles point of view, yes I know that many religous people don’t think that these things are really all that acceptable, but they claim to worship a God that does! All this site really aims to do is mirror the hilarity of religous beliefs, but while talking about another religion that doesn’t cause believers brains to shut down as soon as they see it. I think that helping people understand that while believing in a God is not a bad thing is and of its self the kind of unreasoning belief that gives rise to things like creationism is, is a good thing.

Ok .. i didn’t read all of the posts but at a guess i would say they go in about the same general direction.

To some people FSM might not be a real religion but to some it may be. What does it matter, can’t we all just believe how we want to? I’ve liked the religion part of FSM because of its originality. I like to write and therefore can find a good story in everything .

I’m an atheist but i still like the ideas of religion, its been a convenient way of controlling the masses for the past couple thousand years, and i personally think that all of the other religions have become corrupted in their roots. For one they quite often bring things to extremes (i know not everyone does) and (i think) misunderstand some of their own things.

Secondly if you look at all of the churches and stuff (especially catholic) then you can tell that quite a lot of that money their collecting from people doesn’t go towards the important stuff. If the pope is the ambassador of heaven or w/e then i don’t think he needs all of Vatican city to live in, he should have spiritual comfort in a shoe box right? This money could have been put to a better use, like say, hmm i don’t know, eradicating hunger problems and say, i dunno, maybe providing education to third world countries and such, and i mean educate not brain wash or convert. The third major problem with most religions is that they refuse to conform to the new world. And the final problem i got with most organized religions is that more blood has been shed in the name of some divine being then any other reason.

All of the reasons i dislike most religions are the same reasons i like Pastafarianism, it’s fresh and conforms to the new world, your not spending money so some fat priest can live in comfort, there’s nothing really extreme about this religion, and last i checked we’re not planning any wars or inquisitions, or any such things.

Pastafarianism is a fun and current religion that sticks it to the older religions’ monopolies on human thoughts and emotions. If you think it’s just a joke then think that, i personally see it as a slightly more interesting answer to the question “what do you believe in?” then “no.” I believe in free expression, and i also believe that you can express your selves without being mean about it.

Again people are confusing arrogance with ridicule. I am reminded (by Dr. Dawkins) of the quote by Thomas Jefferson:

It is both arrogant and funny, but its passing out of the arrogant stage and into the proper stage of moderation where the joke is absolutely winning out and it was a very good joke to begin with. It is much safer to take culture out of politics, on the left as much as the right, as people who are not in your culture will respect you more for it. But at the same time culture builds sympathy and cohesian. There probably was too much arrogance in 2004 which is why there seemed to be no particular effort for the Democrats and their allies to launch a coherant campaign, at least from the top down. Many of them seemed as anti-Kerry as anti-Bush, which doesn’t give much credence to them complaining about how they lost the election. The students and professionals who did volunteer their time were absolutely fantastic.
    -
I rather like having Howard Dean (head of the DNC) and Pelosi in charge. They’re really awesome leaders. And whether or not Barack Obama wins, or is the best man for the job, he is an excellent spokesman and able to get past people’s categories. After the culture wars die down a bit, a lot of the moderates will find their way in on the joke. It’s hard to stay annoyed forever.

I don’t think that this is just a joke. A healthy crticism of all religions, not just christianity is essential. People nowadays have become so wrapped in religion (or being against religion) that no one pays attention to what we’re actually saying or believing or the affect of our belief on others. The implications of Christianity or Islam or Atheism (the anti-religion) are far-reaching and affect everybody whether we are aware of it or not. Because we live in a materialistic culture, it’s difficult to find an uncorrupted version of religion. For example holy texts have been used as political tools and that abuse has been success because they’re above “Earthly” criticism (but not Earthly gain.)

It’s important to have reminders that religion is an instution and is prone to the same stagnation and corruption as any other aspect of our society. The greatest danger is that we fail to criticize because of our fear of holy retribution. The other extreme is the persecution and ostracism of people who maintain a spiritual lifestyle. We should be able to have a healthy religion without being afraid of criticism. Criticism means people are not necessarily doubting it, but they’re thinking actively and contribute to that religion’s social evolution. We shouldn’t be so insecure about our own beliefs that we need to convert or isolate others on behalf of our god.

I find the fact that this page draws so much attention is a good sign. Just remember when we fail to criticize religion we start burning witches.

PS. Why does every hate letter on this site conclude the only way to find God is to go fuck one’s self? I know the Bible frowns on *that*!

Remember: every time you masturbate God kills a kitten.

An elaborate spoof on Intelligent Design, The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is neither too elaborate nor too spoofy to succeed in nailing the fallacies of ID. It's even wackier than Jonathan Swift's suggestion that the Irish eat their children as a way to keep them from being a burden, and it may offend just as many people, but Henderson, described elsewhere as a 25-year-old "out-of-work physics major," puts satire to the same serious use that Swift did. Oh, yes, it is very funny. -- Scientific American
