Yeah, I know it’s satire

Yeah, I know it’s satire.  I’m an atheist, and I hate stupid, narrow-minded fundies as much as anyone.  But honestly, this joke has run its course.  People’s lives can actually get ripped apart by Pastafarianism, though I know you don’t really believe it.  Not as many as by organized religion, but organized religion can’t really be stopped except by massive revolution, whereas Pastafarianism can be.  It was funny for a while, but you don’t seem to realize (actually, some of you probably do) that no one cares anymore, that all the hate mail is faked.  Stop laughing at the rest of the world, and realize that you’re not better than the people who post your hatemail; it’s a /joke/.  And your religion has lost its humor.  So shut up when talking to people you think are stupid.  That was the /real /meaning of the “atheists are so arrogant” post.  He was pointing out that /you/ were so arrogant in believing that there were really that many stupid people in the world.  Some of you, I am now sure, know that all this hatemail is faked.  Tell the others, and get everyone to stop acting such a fool.

RAmen,
bbctol

    @Thumper
I kind of wonder why exactly they chose to ban you. The views you expressed were completely in line with their own, and not much harsher than some of the stuff I have read on that site. I was reading a different thread, and saw they had banned one woman for saying she questioned God’s will… she was not abusive and as far as I can tell she was not just pissing around like we are.
    .
Also, has anyone else noted the hypocritical thinking of these people, that they will cheerfully ban from their site anyone who does not completely and mindlessly agree with whatever they say, yet they come here and call us all heathens and threaten to sue us, and we welcome them openly and ask only that they actually enter into the debate mode rather than the childish mud slinging mode? Doesn’t seem to matter how polite/genuine you are on their site, if you don’t see eye to eye, you’re banned.

You guys are great. If the lag on my computer wasn’t such a bitch I’d be right over there helping you!
There’s just too many posts on this thread for that to happen though.
If new threads open up, could we keep this going on those so I could actually join in on the fun?

@ bill – Thanks, and you are welcome. If you haven’t gone to sleep yet, did you post anything about guilt? I have been looking forward to it but have been gone for several days.

@ Thumper – If I did catch god I’m not sure what I’d do with him – although I did think I should spank him for being a very naughty boy. Is there something wrong with me? Where do these thoughts come from? Ha ha ha, j/k, I think for the first time in my life there are several things right with me.

@ Beth – Thanks! I’m in my mid-30’s and this is the first time I’ve had any real interaction with my Dad. He respects my ideas, and that’s really cool.

@ Pixel – It does seem that the longer the threads get the slower the going…

@ Batman – I once was in a room with 2 fundies (no escape for poor Rowdy there!) and they were cheerfully talking about how much proof there is that the world is 6,000 years old. They were in exact agreement with each other, but we had a full day of stuff to do so they said they’d continue the discussion later. I thought “discussion? There is no discussion here.” Discussion involves different viewpoints and ideas; these people just want to have a love-fest for their own ideas. It was a challenge to keep quiet, but necessary in that situation.

I can’t post at all on the arrogant atheists thread… it takes about 10 minutes to get there, and then 10 more minutes for my ‘puter to get tired and shut down when I hit submit. =S
    .
    @Rowdy Wench
I have had to keep myself quiet before as well, and it sucks, because I always think of about a million things I want to say. Just as well though… I don’t think me telling these people what I think of their nutso ideas is going to change them. The only way to change a person is to wait for them to ask… if they’re not asking, then they’re still not thinking… and if they’re not thinking, then they don’t really want to change.

Isn’t it interesting to see them in action…by all means seek Mr Mills’ wisdom but for Christs sake dont have any of your own (unless you’ve worked your way up the religion…then you get a funny hat and the keys to the executive wash room). They banned me because I presented alternative advice for Daniel J (albet barking mad advice but typical “god squad” advice nonetheless)…I was a threat as I had an alternative position to his…I invited him to a have it out with me on the forum but alas he’s not a man of conviction…a believer would defend his beliefs…

You should log back in from a home computer and go nuts… I enjoyed your barking mad advice… ha ha ha. I wonder if they see the irony? I doubt it, but I wonder… I want someone to go on (YOU!!!) and go to a thread by the daughter, and tell her that all of her problems are a direct result of her unfullfilled yet not-completely-exorcised longings for the same sex. And maybe ask her who she is to sit in judgement of others all day long, while she herself is a hypocritical sinner just like the rest of us. (Well, the sinner part anyways.)

    @Thumper
I received your IP address. Let me post some info here without revealing too much about you.
If you replace the ‘40′ ending part in your IP adress with something in the top of the range (so XXXX.40 becomes e. g. XXXX.253 or XXXXX.254) you’ll probably change the ID of your machine to a presently unsued address, thereby avoiding overlap with another active user. See TCP/IP network settings of your computer. At present I can’t ping your machine. That could be because it is turned off or more likely that it is behind a firewall or set up not to respond to pings. Before you try assuming another ID you could send me a note when your computer is on. I or someone else could see if we can ping it when it’s on.
Or you could just try it, as it is unlikely I could get through to your machine.
The IP address hijack may not work for several reasons. Your company network may not let machines use ethernet sockets if those machines do not announce themselves under the right IP address. Also, I see that all IPs in the range you’re in point to the same hostname (would the IP you gave me the the IP of a wireless hub you’re sharing with several other people?). If the pursuitofgod site blocked the name rather than the IP, the workaround won’t work either.
    .
Let me know if it works. Anyone else here good at IP spoofing etc?

Start a campaign to have the word fun taken out of fundamentalist and give it back to the people who really need it.
Here in the UK we’re waiting on America to decide whether church and state can be kept seperate or whether we can add churchstate to our dictionaries and then move on to churchstate schooling. Fingers crossed we keep teaching and preaching seperate.

Ahoy all. back from my hols, suitably recharged and spoiling for a scrap! where be those fundis?
    .
Anthony, glad to have you aboard but do you really think church and state are separate over here in the UK? (the most distant state of the USA?) the church gets massive tax relief yet gets away with financial impropriety on a massive scale. any other institution would have lost its charitable status years ago. we have unelected, largely unwanted clergy poking their noses into politics all the time – wasn’t that long ago they want the right to discriminate as part of their freedom of religion (no the irony isn’t lost on me). we have police that cannot act against Islamic criminals for fear of what their “community” thinks (i think they hate being blown up as much as the next deluded fool but there you go), and we have lecturers in our own universities who promote IDiocy.
    .
We should sympathise with Kansas as fellow sufferers of religious superstition. then we should get angry, get argumentative, and fight back. Sentience or a soaking in davy jones locker… the pirates are coming!
    .

DutchPastaGuy, chances are that the fundie site blocked the IP number, not the ISP name. That would be in keeping with their vBulletin software. They can ban a range of IP numbers but that might effectively ban several of their members. So, my guess is that his username and the one IP have been banned.

Believing in god in any form is a stupid act, that does not mean a person that does is him/herself stupid but just that their logic in this particular area is deeply flawed.

My local doctor (in the UK) is a devout Muslim, ok I don’t want spirtual advice from her but if she can fix me when I’m sick then its fine by me and her religion is her business

All human beings have defects some people smoke/drink too much/some has bad taste in clothes/music some believe in god, some women think i’m unattractive (actually they all do)

If you want to have a stupid belief and not try to forcibly change the way other people live then fair enough. While religion is a bad thing, democracy and free speech are a good thing. Good things and bads can clash makes life fun

It’s really sad that some people stop using their brain when they get too arrogant. I’m talking about those who go “haha its fake hatemail people dont care you are stupid to reply” because they have no facts to back this up. These are all kinds of people saying this, and most of them probably do no research on it, and it seems they forget their brain when they type their comments too.

I don’t see your reasoning; there’s about 2 new hate mails per month, which surprises me since there’s millions of religious fucknuts out there with internet access.

I just sent it to the yahoo mail list, but that is taking its time so here it is:
    .
“ha ha ha ha… nice spelling Jean! So, since I know nothing at all about religion, I need to know, what denomination is it that baptizes people, and can a 17 year old girl be baptized if she is converted? I need to know this…”
    .
Certainly the Catholics (I grew up in a Catholic family, duh!) and I think it is exclusively them, although not 100% sure of the latter. It fits really well with Catholicism. They way into icons, symbols, etc. A ritual like baptising fits in well with the rest of such nonsense.
Yes, at least in the UK you can be baptised at a later age. Prime minister Disraeli (orginally a Jew) was baptised before becoming PM.

    .
I’ve heard that baptisms are more dramatic…you’ll need one of these…white robe and a river!…perhaps invent an obsecure “cultish faith” and see if you can get the Final Harvest to try and talk you out of it…maybe a “baptism by fire”…convince the Final Harvest some Wiccan is going to make you walk across hot coals…the sky’s the limit…
    .
I wouldn’t worry about Bibles and burning torches…they only do this if there’s a plague of lycanthropes in the parish…sometimes a vampire…

Witch hunting hasn’t gone completely out of style you know, and these demon hunters might be willing to give it a go.

That is just crazy. I like how the author actually blames Darwin’s theory of evolution for “all the evil in the world, including international terrorism.” Does anyone else wonder at this member of a terrorist group describing terrorism as an “evil” thing? The group he belongs to SUPPORTS IT… several members have been convicted of terrorist activities.
    .
    Pffft… honestly, the world is nuts. Not to beat a dead horse here, but I was perusing the “pursuit of god” site again, reading the threads… and you know, I don’t feel guilty for mocking them anymore. They are the very worst examples of Christianity… one thread I was reading about the teaching of Catholicism (maybe shouldn’t be baptizing Beckie) and I was appalled at the hypocrisy… that Jeff guy is truly a candidate for the mental institution, he told another senior member that his whole family would go to hell because they were idol-worshipers and that he himself had been saved from the “whore of babylon”. Sick sick sick… the best quote I found was this;
“Those who seek to bring civil turmoil among us Christians are like dogs that betray their masters.”
From this quote alone, does anyone besides me think that these religious leaders are less concerned with God and more concerned simply with securing their power base? I mean, really, they call us all dogs… and see themselves as our masters. Arrogant bullshit artists… I wish there was a way to debate them without them banning us from their site… I really really would like them to explain their actions and their hypocritical ideas and complete stupidity. (At one time, I thought maybe they were mocking BeckieC’s spelling, but having read more, no, they probably don’t even notice it.)

I know that reasoned debate will not change these people, but I honestly would like to hear how they would justify themselves, and get an idea of what kind of sick personality gets caught in this vicious web of lies and abuse.

It’s said that “the greatest trick the devil ever played was convincing the world that he didn’t exist”…BS…if there is such thing as a devil his greatest trick was creating religion and then convincing everyone it had something to do with God.
    .
Power and control are the only true aims of any religion (CoFSM excepted). Even looking at DPG’s link…I don’t believe that the high ranking muslim fundies(the ones that don’t blow themselves up) believe that crap…it’s propaganda to keep the dumb, dumb!

Yes, I know… I just got really pissy there for a moment. You know how I was mocking “Daughter” earlier? Well, I feel bad… having read more of her stuff, she is a new Christian. (Apparently becoming a senior member over there doesn’t actually require a long time membership, just a complete lack of rationality). Anyways, her life sounds like it was really really hard, and she turned to religion, and now somehow everything is better and blah blah blah. I feel kind of guilty for making fun of her… but more so I am just pissed the f**k off that these “delusionists” are playing on her pain and her sorrow and probably for no other reason than to keep her needy and wanting. It makes me a little bit sick. Literally, I think I threw up in my mouth just a little bit…
    .
Kay, but I am good now. I grabbed a nice friendly beer from the fridge and am in the process of defrosting the meat to make meatballs (sometimes all this FSM talk makes me really crave actual spaghetti & meat balls). All is well in Batman land, just thoroughly disgusted at the general religious population. You know? Frustrated with no outlet… that’s me.

Fine, unless it goes the “common ennemy” way: don’t forget the Islam in medieval Spain (711-1492) was pretty tolerant towards Christians and Jews (although they had a tax to pay for professing their religion), them being considered “People of the Book” after all. Suppose they plot against the top infidels (agnosts, atheists, Darwinists, evolutionists…) first, and go for a fight between them afterwards?

Their own spelling is terrible, even in my non-edited hurry-hurry posts I don’t write that many errors.
    .
Couldn’t this whole Daughter’s husband-prayer-thing be a con trick, to persuade others of the power of their vision of religion? They have something about donating and all too. Besides that, it seems to me, being a musicianas, that they have much forums round music. The ultimate way of spreading the word? Luckily, WE have Booty to make songs, albeit on existing music. But the vast majority of church singing happens with new (…) words on existing music.

Long post, won’t be staying long myself. I’ll take some peeks into different sites, and then… see you tomorrow!

This is your outlet…it’s refreshing to come here, have some fun and speak to people that know WTF is really going on.
In OZ we’re fairly lucky…not many people want to talk about religion outside of church (the odd “re born” being an exception) My grandparents were an example of “full on” Aussie Catholics…this meant they got “spruced up” for Sunday mass and took the station wagon for it’s once a week trip a km down the road…otherwise they didn’t mention it.
These Evangelical types are the real “go getters”…out trying to recruit vulnerable and bleed them for cash…pathetic…like I said to Bill…when we’re doing a Troll stint on a Xtian forum I don’t believe in abusing the individuals but making a mockery of the whole show is, to my way of thinking, fair game…I can’t wait to make a return…I’ll go back as “Fred Thrupmer CPA”…Marc McOar will get a kick out of that…ha ha…

Yes, refreshing times to be had amongst you pirates. I wish there were more pirates in Calgary… sigh. Mostly just surrounded by rednecks. Or at least, the people I know are. =S
Mocking the religion (as it exists on that site) is certainly fun, I will keep an eye for Fred’s posts… ha ha ha ha… will you give a heads up when you are going back in?

Have a good night, and thanks for the fun times! I’m off now as well, gotta make some actual food for dinner tonight… need a break from eating nothing but creamed wheat and rice crackers… and Mango sorbet. Yummm…
    .
Cheers and arrgh to all of you pirates… keep up the good work!

I’m finding the emotions of it really hard. I wanted to relay the pain of people I knew that had to deal with trivial religious trangressions in terms of major guilt put on them by some extrernal source: ie. religion.
And I don’t want to go over that so much, unless it’s necessary. It’s painful. But you guys know these people. Is it only me who knows of a life or two or five that was tormented by the guilt that religion put on them?
I argue in my paper (4th link) that guilt is not ever a good motivator for right action.
Maybe it was good at some time, to keep social order, but not it is a serious psychological burden. Carrie, the movie, gives me a sense of what religion could do to a total innocent. This is not outside my personal experinece. Don’t you all know people like carrie?
If you want to see what I think guilt is, click my name and pick 4th link.

@ everyone – this will be a very personal post for me. I hope that’s OK…

@ bill – I read your essay thus far on guilt and I like it. You are as brilliant as Wench Beth said you are! I have some further thoughts on guilt and shame. I am currently reading a book called “The Dance of Fear” which has a large section on shame. At one point the author says that guilt is about doing and shame is about being. I have largely eliminated guilt by learning how to make better decisions. But, only in the last week have I gotten the courage to face the last remnants of my shame. The problem with shame is that it creates really awful core beliefs mostly to do with never being good enough. There are others like “I am unlovable” and “I am unworthy” that go with shame too. I have yet to tackle these, but am getting started this week. I am very fortunate to have a husband who has waited for years till I could get to the place where I can see that I am smart, funny, sexy and decent (or indecent when the time comes! hahaha).

I want to avoid the scroll rule but have a lot to say on this! I don’t want to sound like I’m whining because I’m not, but it’s been a long haul to get my head above water and realize that I can be what I’ve always wanted to be and never believed I could. I think it will be part (or most) of my life’s work to make sure that other people don’t have to live as long in self-loathing and fear as I did. I made a joke on another thread about “influencing” the minds of teenaged girls…but this is what I do. I teach them that they are smart, funny, capable and the rest 20 years before I figured that out for myself.

“At one point the author says that guilt is about doing and shame is about being.”
I wanted to make that point also. The focus of guilt is on the act performed. The focus of shame is on what kind of person you want to be, your essence. I believe you choose it. I think this is similar to what your author is saying.
I think the problem with shame is when you let your ideal person be put on you instead of chosen by you. It’s so easy to feel shamed by others but only if you get convinced that their ideal should be yours.
If you start from what You? want to be, shame is easy to deal with. If you are shamed, either change your ideal or resolve to do better at living up to it.
What from what you say, it just sounds to me as if you’ve let others decide what/who you want to be. The pressures are subtle. Sometimes you have to Fight!
P.S. You are lucky to have such support. He sees your goodness and your greatness.

Can one of you do ole Thumpie a favour? I’d like someone to engage Mr Mills on the topic of God’s “maleness”…does God “have one” and if so what does he do with it…especially when all the angels are sleeping…you might have to pretend to be 10 years old to avoid getting the boot but this is bound to be fun…does God pee?…therefore he drinks and eats and sh*ts as well…all good stuff to scare the hell out of Millsey…

An elaborate spoof on Intelligent Design, The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is neither too elaborate nor too spoofy to succeed in nailing the fallacies of ID. It's even wackier than Jonathan Swift's suggestion that the Irish eat their children as a way to keep them from being a burden, and it may offend just as many people, but Henderson, described elsewhere as a 25-year-old "out-of-work physics major," puts satire to the same serious use that Swift did. Oh, yes, it is very funny. -- Scientific American
