fsm crashes Flock of Dodos screening

I had to write you and tell you about the event we had here at my university (East Carolina University) last night. We had a screening of the new hit documentary “Flock of Dodos: The Intelligent Design / Evolution Circus” by Harvard-trained biologist-turned-filmmaker Randy Olson. Afterwards, there was a panel discussion that included Randy Olson, and faculty from biology, anthropology, geology(UNCW), and religios studies. Obviously, I felt that it was my duty to show up in full pirate regalia and hand out some propaganda.

It went really great! Our 750 seat theater was packed to the hilt. I met many fellow pastafarians, and think I converted quite a few more. When I asked an FSM based question of the panel, it was met with numerous rounds of applause and laughter. Afterwards some of the panelists, students, and faculty all went out for a beer. I countinued my evangelizing at the bar, and think I made a few more converts. I have to say that it was a great day for FSM!

I am attaching photos of my costume and me handing out brochures. Theres a photo with Randy Olson, our moderator Dr. Joe Luczkovich, and myself. Finally, I am including a photo of a random drunk girl molesting our noodly creator in a less than holy manner (I think he actually enjoyed it!)

The film was really great and hilarious. I definitely think pastafarians will enjoy it! The trailer can be viewed here: http://www.flockofdodos.com/ and you can see if there will be a screening near you. There will be screenings all over the country in the next month for Darwin Day. I would definitely reccomend everyone try and make it out to a screening, and don’t forget your pirate regalia!

Thanks Again,
Nick Jones

    What browser you using (silly Q I guess FF2)? It can be as slow as Blair and Bush put together sometimes. I’ve had a few wordpress errors recently too!

    (Calmed down slightly, yes I added this after, @DPG: You missed
    important points, useless git ;)
    .
    I’ve had far too shit a day to fuck around any more. I did a really long

    There is a lot to be said about stars making lots of different elements
    through nuclear fusion. I’ve already said it. It explains where some of
    it comes from, and I ain’t pissing repeating it. I’m tired, and I’m
    really pissed off.
    Go to NASA (website) and learn about stars collapsing etc.

    @JC
    You ARE intelligent (FFS, I keep bloody spelling that word wrong!), you
    can think, you can use logic and more importantly you listen and learn.
    Just because you haven’t been taught some things that we have, does NOT
    make you stupid, just less informed.
    I would like to thank you for hanging around and helping a really good
    debate. Few people could have survived us this long. Again, thanks,
    you’re a real cool chap. Cheers. Yep, that’s right, even in this mood I
    still like you despite your beliefs…. ;)
    .
    @DPG - ARSEHOLE, not fucking asshole. Pity’s sake ;) So, whats wrong with
    smug arse-holiness, when you prove a point you deserve it.

    Off to bed. (Don’t think you should have the bits before www).

    “Americanisation of English spelling”
    Again you have all missed the point. It matters not where I come from. What matters is how you all present yourselves. “DutchPastaGuy” Has repeatedly made himself look pompous in his postings in this thread. Trying to excuse himself by pointing at me is most lame. “DutchPastaGuy” Really should read his own posts. He should also realize that only he is responsible for what he types. Pompous is the word that fits here. If you are all “above” me you should at least try to show it in your posts.

  4. 684 Nick the Missionary Jan 26th, 2007 at 6:31 pm

    .
    @ Thumper. You always were a trollish little ass, even before your inpersonator showed up. At least we found a non-believer who is capable of intelligent discourse. Did you notice how we switched from over 100 stupid posts a day, to about 30 thought provoking posts a day?
    .
    @ JC. I still don’t understand what it is that you DO believe. You have claimed that you believe in evolution (to a certain point, which I’m not sure actually is), but that god is responsible for creation. But you keep arguing about the improbableness of abiogenesis, and monkeys creating space ships. The last time I addressed you, I got no reply. So I have to ask you what you actually DO believe concerning evolution and god, because I’m quite confused at this point.
    .
    @Alchemist. Yeah it would be cool if someone would video the event and put it up on youtube like the Dawkins lectures and Q&A’s. They are a hoot.

    Teddy. I’ve been a bit arsey with DPG recently and decided to sidestep this one :)
    .
    Were you getting an awaiting moderation? I’ve found this when I’ve posted more than one link to the same site. It’s a bit hit and miss though. I’m pretty sure that the bits before w3 are ok on one link but not two???

  8. 688 Teddy Jan 26th, 2007 at 6:38 pm

    @JC, serious Q.
    So, you believe God. No probs with that. Do you believe the bible verbatim? Or do you believe some of it is just plain wrong (miss translation, man abusing it etc). Do you believe the bible at all, or have your personal views on God.
    Don’t need to be specific, just curious.
    .
    Again, I and many more do like you, we ain’t knocking you.
    .
    I personally believe the closest we get to a God is nature, the force that is etc. I started believing it from spending a fair time in woods. Woods and forests have a curious feel of life. From the trees. It fascinates me, and never fails to relax me.

  9. 689 Teddy Jan 26th, 2007 at 6:42 pm

    @Alchemist:
    ;) Wasn’t being arsey with DPG. Pride comes before a fall, if he wants to be pompous I have no issues, and hell, I feel it myself a lot of the time. It’s a good feeling. NotsayingyouaresayingIamBTW. Just saying.

    Somewhat different responses here.
    “So, whats wrong with smug arse-holiness, when you prove a point you deserve it.”
    ““DutchPastaGuy” Really should read his own posts. He should also realize that only he is responsible for what he types. Pompous is the word that fits here.”
    As I said, I didn’t feel like holding back any. And yes, that made me sound like a pompous arse. I think the message was correct though. I’ll soon go get some sleep and try to be less pompous tomorrow.
    @JC, I welcome Teddys words, please hang around. Care to debate a bit more with a less pompous arse somewhere over the weekend? I’ll offer you a deal: I’ll be less pompous, you stop posting my office phone number and give your response to my remarks about infrequently occuring reactions and activation energies. Deal?

    I encountered some Jehovah’s Witnesses today. They tried to convert me to intelligent design theory by waving their bibles. I stood in front of their booth and argued with them until they started to close it down, almost an hour later. In the course of the debate I mentioned the FSM website a few times, although I didn’t mention His Noodliness specifically (I wasn’t vested in the proper garb of pirate regalia at the time). I also got them to admit to the following:
    ––Their belief in their religion is a whim. It is based on emotion, rather than reason, and is a preference not a fact.
    ––Their religion makes no more inherent sense than atheism or agnosticism.
    ––When selecting a book to use as a foundation for your life, it makes as much sense to use the bible as “Speaker for the Dead” by Orson Scott Card. (http://www.amazon.com/Speaker-Dead-Ender-Book-2/dp/0812550757/sr=8-1/qid=1169859365/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-7745452-9556607?ie=UTF8&s=books)
    ––People have many reasons to behave ethically without needing to resort to gods.
    ––Telling people that god, unquestionably, exists implies that it is an established provable fact, and is thus a lie.
    ––Intelligent design theory is absolutely not science. (Although I got them to admit to this one, they still seemed to think that it had a place in science classrooms in public schools. What can I say? One of them was from Kansas.)
    ––It is unintelligent and illogical for them not to tolerate our perspective as atheists, agnostics, scientists, and philosophers.
    My only regrets insofar as this debate was concerned are that I neglected to mention that “Speaker for the Dead” makes a better choice of book than the bible, by virtue of its Hugo and Nebula awards, and that I didn’t get them to abandon their religion entirely. I’m very glad that I wasted their time and prevented them from converting others. Overall, I feel that I did my part. What do all of you think, my fellow pasta lovers?

    @ Eye Whitness.
    It gets even better! Hovind has been blogging from jail for the last few months while he was awaiting sentencing. Check it out:

    .
    My favorite was when he talked about bribing inmates with snickers bars if they would memorize bible verses!

  13. 693 Alchemist Jan 26th, 2007 at 6:50 pm

    Nick. I’m not sure the BHA would be keen on that. They (we? well I’m a member) are a non-profit making organisation. We kind of need the money. I don’t know though? It’s a very limited audience in London, I’m in the UK and doubt I’ll be arsed with an 8 hour round trip for an hour and a half! I will email them. I want to see it. (no doubt it will end up on youtube)!
    .
    Teddy. Another B5 fan! Whoohoo. I love that series, chaos and law battle it out. The giants in the playground.
    .
    I’ve got XP on my main PC ‘cos I like the odd HL2 play.
    My laptop doesn’t need it though and have been thinking about playing with a live cd first.
    One big question. What photo editors (apart from GiMP) are there. Does Photoshop CS work under Linux. I need a decent one that handles RAW.

    @Teddy
    “They’ve found some key soup ingredients here. Why aren’t you more exited?”
    I read The Register frequently. I believe it somewhat less frequently. It’s often too sensationalist. If I read about the same news on The Register, ArsTechnica, Cnet news and Macworld, The Register is usually the odd one out if there is one.

  16. 696 DutchPastaGuy Jan 26th, 2007 at 7:04 pm

    And does anyone know the record number of posts in a thread? I think the FAQ and first Scientific endorsements page run near or past 1000. NS, JC stick around for a bit and we’ll get there!

  17. 697 Teddy Jan 26th, 2007 at 7:05 pm

    @Alchemist:
    Photoshop should work under wine (a compatibility layer). By RAW, I assume you mean your camera’s own raw format. There are many definitions of raw, including a bitmap without a header etc. Please continue this discussion on
    dihenydd@gmail.com, by should work, people have got it working.
    .
    Happy to help, but I will not have this thread turn to a MS Windows / GNU/Linux /Mac OSX war, or there will be blood shed.
    .
    .
    G’Kar made a truely great quote to answer, “What is truth, what is God?”
    Once this debate dies a little I shall post it.

    @DPG
    I agree, a lot in el’reg is to be taken with a pinch(?) of salt. However, reading the last lines of the articles normally remove most of the hype and exaggeration/bias - hell they make no claims to be unbiased… ;)
    .
    They do actually point to two rather more respected journals/etc too. Also, I’ve never known them to post direct lies, just rather biased opinions.

Purchase the Gospel

An elaborate spoof on Intelligent Design, The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is neither too elaborate nor too spoofy to succeed in nailing the fallacies of ID. It's even wackier than Jonathan Swift's suggestion that the Irish eat their children as a way to keep them from being a burden, and it may offend just as many people, but Henderson, described elsewhere as a 25-year-old "out-of-work physics major," puts satire to the same serious use that Swift did. Oh, yes, it is very funny. -- Scientific American
