Falwell’s Flub: Jerry-Rigged Policy Opens Door For Pagan Proselytizing In Virginia Public School

A group of Pagans in Albemarle County, Va., was recently given permission to advertise their multi-cultural holiday program to public school children – and they have the Rev. Jerry Falwell to thank for it.

I liked the last line: freedom of religion means freedom for all religions, even the ones you don’t like. But that is something no fundie is ever going to understand. Because for them it is NOT about freedom of religion but of pushing and celebrating THEIR religion, They should have the freedom, not those others.

Yep, Richard Dawkins often lamented the brainwashing parents are allowed to do on their children. As a depressing link, let me repeat the url to an article about home schooling in the US, where parents teach their own children and are allowed to fill their minds with just about any form of BS. I got this one from an earlier thread:

ContAltDel. We have a few extreme protestant villages here in the Netherlands. Now one of them (staphorst) has decided it will be illegal to light any fireworks on sunday, because it would interfere with the sunday-rest… Not that anyone NOT of their particular version of christianity would ever consider living there, but really.

I’m curious, if it’s true, if those rangers can actually say that with a straight face! If so, they should be considered for an oscar for best performance.

Well, yes, I know – it was a sort of “Why, oh why, oh why?” kind of question – exasperated rhetorical I think I shall call it!
I have 2 small kids – 6 and 4 and I despair of the schools sometimes – in a way we are lucky cos we are in the UK, and they dilute the crap considerably, but they are both now wandering round holding their hands “in prayer” and whispering into them “talking to god” – they have no idea what god is really – a strange version of santa claus I think from what they say – but it is so hard to know what to say at their young age – both sets of grandparents are very religious, so while they are still around I don’t really want to say it is crap, just for their sakes, but I find them being taught to pray like that disconcerting to say the least, maybe we will tell them what we think when they stop believing in santa and the tooth fairy! Still, they both already know vaguely about the flying spaghetti monster, so we are onto a winner there!

Since putting a pirate fish sticker on my car my life has completely turned around. First, I’ve been unemployed for seven years – having retired from a position of importance in a very large semi-conductor company where I architected silicon processors. Upon putting the fish sticker on my car, the very next day I was offered a part-time fill-in position as a janitor at our local health club. I of course accepted and am making $8 an hour when one of the other janitors calls in sick. Next, I sold my old motorcycle helmet exactly two days after placing the sticker on my car. Last – but very important – the shrinkage of my penickular member – apparently the result of our house being filled with atomic clocks made in China – has stopped. This sticker is changing my life, I appear to have been touched by his Noodly Appendage.

Nikky–here’s what I’ve noticed about spelling, and when I was getting my degree in education I argued it with several professors. While there are many SMART people who CAN’T spell, there don’t seem to be any dumb people who can. I know kazillions of really intelligent people who can’t spell (still love you, Bobby!), and I really don’t think there’s a way to teach them how. You can teach them to use Spell Check and dictionaries and editors, but that’s about it. Correct spelling’s an inborn thing, and probably genetic. (There doesn’t seem to be an evolutionary preference for good spellers, though.) Fortunately or not, those of us who give a damn about it are in the minority! Martha

    Hi Cari’s mom. :)
I’d agree, as that has been my observation as well.
I find it kind of hard to believe now, but through school I was always near the top for spelling. I often won spelling competitions in primary school and just seemed to have an instinct for it. The deterioration may also be due to my studies biological fields, which use a lot of Latin terminology, some of which still send my mind blank. I have a few half decent excuses up my sleeve now.

Thinking deeper on that, maybe it’s one of those ‘left brain/right brain’ things.
Maybe ’sciency’ type people use one side (non-spelling/grammar side) and creative types use the other. Maybe.
Then, there are those that don’t have much of a brain to use either side.

On the spelling thing – I have always been pretty good at spelling, but rubbish at maths, my other half is the other way around – we compliment each other nicely – I am his official spell checker and he does my adding up for me! I am fairly convinced you either get maths or spelling abilities, but rarely both. I do like correct spelling, but I know so many people who can’t do it that I learn to put up with a certain amount or mistakes, but I fully concur with Cari’s mom’s point.
Obviously in this setting typos have a lot to answer for as well – things you would never misspell if using a pen and paper come out horribly mangled.

What’s happening here in the U.S. is frightening to me and I’d like to find out from like-minded individuals what we can and will do about it. We’re (as a nation) teaching our children ignorance and bigotry while other developed countries begin to pull ahead of us in education and innovation. Suggestions?

BTW, I recently wrote to my representative in congress regarding VA’s proposed constitutional ban on gay marriage. I asked her if it was an appropriate issue for her to be spending time on, rather than our education system, healthcare, econonmy, oil dependence, global warming, white house corruption, the fucking war in the middle east that we started….you know issues that actually matter to our country. Her response to me, in an official letter with her very-official looking signature stamp was: “The constitution provides for freedom of religion, not from religion.” In other words, America’s fucked.

These are the exact words of Rep. Jo Anne Davis, an elected official. Does anyone besides me see a problem with that statement?

What disappoints me about atheists (myself included) is that we’re so dedicated to our principals freedom of speech, live and let live etc…, that we’re not nearly as politically mobile as our right-wing counterparts. That’s why fundamentalism is gaining so much ground. We have a “believe whatever you want attitude,” while their’s is “believe what you want, we’ll just get people elected who will tell your kids what they’re allowed to believe.” It’s embarrassing that openly admitting you’re an atheist will almost certainly end your political career, despite your credentials. @theAntibush
I don’t live in the US, but I have a few links that may be of intertest to you. First is the Secular Coalition for America,
    http://www.secular.org/

I really do think that right now, the Americans would accept an atheist, in a public office.

The problem with expecting people to respect others’ religious beliefs is that so many of the religious fundamentalists sincerely believe that their “god” DEMANDS strict obedience! How can you argue with someone who sees religion not as a choice but as a deep, fundamental truth? Tolerance is not something those types embrace, and I reluctantly conclude that this is what’s going to bring our currrent occupation of Earth to an end, sooner or later. I’m a global pessimist; local optimist–I do what I can in my little corner of Tucson, teaching the little kids that there’s a bigger world out there filled with opportunities to be humane. Martha

on the serious side, I think that right now the situation in America is very bad, but i also think it goes in cycles. When my dad was a kid children would be laughed out of school for even bringing up religiuos discussions. It just wasn’t polite and didn’t happen. It will get better eventually.
Interestingly, you know the senator who just swore in? Some jacks were making a fuss over how he swore on the Koran. You’re not even supposed to swear on anything, most people just bring something important along with them, “happened” to be a bible mostly. If I ever get elected, I’m gonna make a stack of Lord of the Rings, Hitchhikers Guide, and Asimov books to swear on.^_^

I despise Islam, no joke. It is a hate ridden religion. Likewise Christianity. In the UK things are getting stupid. It was reported (make of that what you will:)) that a suspect in a murder case managed to flee the UK by donning a Niqab (full veil)? We now have a local authority setting aside swimming pool time for muslim women only. Why? Sure, I can understand women only swimming sessions, but muslim only? Surely that’s racist?

See, most people think he’s just a fucking retard. My theory is quite the opposite. I believe he’s none other than the sinister journevangelist, Glenn Beck, in disguise as an inarticulate moron so that he doesn’t have to be held criminally accountable for any of his actions. Therefore, the artfully circulated rumor that Chaney is the puppetmaster behind the poor slobbering jackass…is mere propaganda. So far, the true magnitude of GW’s intelligence has been a closley guarded national secret, requiring the highest level of security clearance to even discuss it. It’s no wonder they’ve been trying to silence me by cancelling the Chappelle Show. In fact, having told you this, I may have placed you all in grave danger. I’m sorry. You guys stay the course while I come up with an exit strategy.

Nucular is actually a word, believe or not. It’s a popular teenage mutant ninja turtle statement of excitement or joy, equivalent to tubular. As I said, if GW didn’t absolutely stay the course on pretending to be head-in-a-shitpile stupid, then we’d see through the whole thing and start demanding a fair, honest, and transparent government…and everyone knows we don’t have a right to ask for that here in America. That’s why GW and the republican congress got rid of it. Besides, setting aside proper pronounciation, spelling, rules of grammar, and proven scientific knowledge is the true path to salvation. That’s why I’m going to start saying nucular and I’ll spend more time on the various internets and googles as well.

    @Dr Maglacey
You’re right about pb on the BBC forum. His original pet line was ‘Why hasn’t anyone ever shown a half-evolved feather?’. Then forum poster Tony Jackson, I assume a scientist, posted a list of references to scientific journal articles concerning fossils in China that did show half-evolved feathers. His excuse for ignoring them: my internet connection is too slow to download the links. Then he turned to the 200 scientists on AIG. So I pointed out to him that science is not decided by majority vote. But that if you want to play the numbers game, someone else stated there are 353000 pro-evolution scientists, i. e. almost 2000:1 in favour of evolution. But does he accept that science speaks in favour of evolution? No, of couirse not. He prefers to focus on the tiny exception to claim that the scientific field is divided. Sigh.
Btw: would the BBC forum posters ‘Observer’, ‘Questioner’, ‘Mark’ and ‘Nikky’ happen to be you?

I’m not Mark, but sometimes I do have a problem remembering who I am on all these blogs. I’m pretty sure that I’m Nikki though, at least on one or two posts. Depends on the subject at the time I think.
Must be quite rather disconcerting for PB having so many different science types posting against him though. ;)

Mark is doing an excellent job over there, but I fear that pb really is only trying to waste his time. I hope Mark doesn’t get too bogged down in it, as I’m sure he has more promising things to do. The forums on that site seem to take so long to load (could be my system) and then there is the moderation waiting time. Very time consuming!
Mark is also a lot more eloquent and concise than those other posters you named.
As you said Tony Jackson’s post also stood out and I think, if I remember correctly, Peter Klaver too.

    Hi Nikky,
Mark and Tony are indeed doing good work. Mine (Peter Klaver) has been limited mostly to applauding Tony and the others for their constructive science approach. And maybe tearing down some of the very obvious flaws in pbs posts. My last reply to pb has been to say I’m done with answering his nonsense and to encourage the other scientist posters to ignore him also. As you said, it wastes so much time.
The BBC blog waiting times are not in your system. The blog server doesn’t render the total thread as a single html page that it then sends , instead it sends each post one by one. So if there are 80 posts in a thread, you go through the latency, tcp/ip overhead etc 80 times.
Hope you get your sense of self back soon. And don’t worry, I spend my working hours doing a bit of numerical quantum mechanics calculations on FeCr alloys. No secret service angle in it at all.

After 1877, the vitalism humbug of evolution joined mysticism, astrology, and alchemy in the dustbin of history.”

Creationists like to hold up the 200+ scientists who support Creationism on the AIG website. Not that science is decided by democratic majority or a large minority, but if you want to play the numbers game, it’s nice to see that for every Creationist scientists, there are ~1700 evolutionists.

And further more, WTF is someone saying the discredited principle of ’spontaneous generation’ (that complex lifeforms arise frequently spontaneously from ‘inert’ matter) in any way detracts from evolution (that under the right conditions complex lifeforms will inevitably evolve over hundreds of millions of years in incremental steps guided by the intrinsic but undirected manifest process of natural selection arising inevitablely from the nature of self reproductive entities).

Unfortunately, the YECs and IDiots are trying to push Creationism into schools, sometimes disguised as supposed science under the nomer of Intelligent Design. So maybe the laziness of some students will save us: kids not listening to what BS is being peddled to them.

The 200+ Creationsist scientists are the ones listed on AIG, most of them do have PhDs and even professors titles. The 353000 Evolutionists are a number I got from a discussion about religion vs science on a BBC blog. I don’t know where it came from originally or how accurate it is.

The shcools that try to shove religion down the students throats may well just make them into athiests, I mean seariously, how many people here never tried to find some bit of information, obscure of otherwise, to try and catch a teacher out? all the religious bs might just get them to research the real world. Or maybe it’s just an Irish thing, probably is, the best way to get us to do something is to ban it (within reason).

Rabbit is clearly very wise. My mother is an adamant atheist to the point where she would have been as disappointed with her children if they were religious as if they turned out gay, she dislikes Christians in particular. The reason for this is that she went to a faith school, a convent, where she was bulled by nuns for years. I thought that this was limited to Europe, or at least the Weston world till one day I was talking to an indian friend who divulged that his mother hates Christians because she went to a convent school on the other side of the world.

I couldn’t make this crap up, if I wanted too…
    .
How to be a good Christian fountain…

Inflate your cheeks, and build up some pressure in your mouth. Pinch your nose if you need to.- With your cheeks inflated, try breathing in and out through your nose.- Here’s one to try at home, in the shower, or over the sink. Get a mouthful of water. While breathing through your nose normally, force a steady stream of water out through your lips. The key is to get a steady stream of water forced out by your cheek muscles, while breathing through your nose. Once your muscles have learned this “contradictory” set of actions.- Now, using a straw and a glass of water about 1/3 full, practice blowing bubbles with cheek pressure, and alternating the source of air, first lungs, then cheeks. Sniff air in while using your cheeks to create a steady stream of bubbles. In this exercise, the purpose is to make the switch between lung and cheek power, and keeping the bubbles coming steadily.

Yeah, it is over the top Peter. Thing is, it is the stuff of dreams of the evangelical fundamentalists. You’ve only got to go to a few of the more serious science forums to see how insidiously hard these YEC?IDiots are fighting to infiltrate their world view into society. Their agenda of redefining society into a biblical framework through education and politics is rarely, even thinly, veiled. Even when they are arguing with you, that there is no scientific evidence for evolution and any presented is a global conspiracy of scientists. Not just biologists ect who subscribe to evolution either. All fields of science are in on this conspiracy. These people are crazy and do strive hard to recruit anyone in power they can.
We’re lucky in OZ, but Bush’s tendencies and it’s global influence them keeps me, just a a little alert. The possible scenarios portrayed in that article are extreme, however. Reguardless of the over the top nature of the article, I have no doubt how dangerous these people could be with influence/power in the right places.
The evangelicals certainly work their butts off to get the numbers of supporters.

It’s andy mcIntoshs’ scientific and rational critique of modern geology that persuaded me.
    .
“Furthermore the science of a worldwide Flood is completely consistent with the fossil record. Right through the fossil record are fossils of both extinct creatures and those like today, sometimes in the same strata. The fish found in the old red sandstone of Scotland were not so different to fish today. Some were exactly the same as those today. The sedimentary geology of Scotland and around the world bears testimony to the geological power not ‘of the vestiges of an antique past’ but of recent events 4,500 years ago. Indeed some strata can only be explained by catastrophic deposition. For instance the coal seams all over the world, in places miles thick, are formed from vegetation, but the high rank coal that is often found in these seams can only be explained by catastrophic deposition, since high rank coal needs oxygen exclusion of the vegetation that would otherwise only form a low grade peat. Other evidence of polystrate fossil trees running right across strata again indicate rapid deposition and burial – all consistent with a worldwide Flood and which we have no excuse not to believe in. The rocks all around us testify to this, and we do well to heed, for God states (2 Peter 3) that the same Word that brought in the ferocity of worldwide judgement at the flood, will usher in the last days when every knee shall bow before the Creator and Judge – none other than our Saviour in all His glory.”

on the serious side, I think that right now the situation in America is very bad, but i also think it goes in cycles. When my dad was a kid children would be laughed out of school for even bringing up religiuos discussions. It just wasn’t polite and didn’t happen. It will get better eventually.
Interestingly, you know the senator who just swore in? Some jacks were making a fuss over how he swore on the Koran. Be forthright, and commanding! People respond to power! And will want to be like you!
And if that doesn’t pan out, at least you’ll have kissed some wenches! It’s win/win really!

There is truth in what you say Peter.
Indeed the kissing wenches is a good thing]
goes well with the drinking the beer

BTW: what do you call mountain pirates?
remember I’ll be in the Green Mts of Vermont

    Aye’m not afeared o’talking like a pirate

    AHA!!!!!!! –just found it–

they be called Highwaymen! Of course!

And so it came to pass not so long ago that a Highwayman and his one or two
skallywag companions came into the Green Mountains and laid about with noodles and ale with a splash of Zubrovka and ‘presso to bring the misinformed and uninformed and uniformed and such into the glow of his noodly appendage therby making that corner of the Green Mountains safe for strippers yet again and so did the volcano of beer arise and all was well.

    Ya-Hip, My Hearties!
    1819
From MOORE’S Tom Crib’s Memorial to Congress:—“Sung by Jack Holmes, the Coachman, at a late Masquerade in St Giles’s, in the character of Lord C—st—e—on … This song which was written for him by Mr. Gregson, etc.”.

    I

I first was hired to peg a Hack
They call “The Erin” sometime back,
Where soon I learned to patter flash,
To curb the tits, and tip the lash—
Which pleased the Master of The Crown
So much, he had me up to town,
And gave me lots of quids a year,
    To tool “The Constitutions” here.
So, ya-hip, hearties, here am I
    That drive the Constitution Fly.

    II

Some wonder how the Fly holds out,
    So rotten ’tis, within, without;
So loaded too, through thick and thin,
And with such heavy creturs IN.
But, Lord, ’t will last our time—or if
The wheels should, now and then, get stiff,
Oil of Palm’s the thing that, flowing,
Sets the naves and felloes going.
    So ya-hip, Hearties! etc.

    III

Some wonder, too, the tits that pull
This rum concern along, so full,
Should never back or bolt, or kick
The load and driver to Old Nick.
But, never fear, the breed, though British,
    Is now no longer game or skittish;
    Except sometimes about their corn,
    Tamer Houghnhums ne’er were born.
    So ya-hip, Hearties, etc.

    IV

And then so sociably we ride!—
While some have places, snug, inside,
Some hoping to be there anon.
Through many a dirty road hang on.
And when we reach a filthy spot
(Plenty of which there are, God wot),
You’d laugh to see with what an air
We take the spatter—each his share.
    So ya-hip, Hearties! etc.

we all need some time to think

cuz we’ve had a long hard day
    unassuming, unafraid
and we bared our skin and bone
and we climbed atop this stone

so let us lie, mountain pirates
and look up at the stars
because I know that we are tired
but we’ve found out who we are

and upon this bed of dirt
    we’ll pacify the hurt
    upon this precipice
we know just what living is (living is, living is)

and so on to tonight’s conversion.

This comment is a result of a guilty verdict having been passed upon Umran Javed for soliciting murder. He was one of the protesters over the publication of the mohammad cartoons in the Danish press.

.”Aved told a crowd of hundreds at the February 2006 protest: “Bomb, bomb Denmark, bomb, bomb USA.”
    .
This was the protest where people were carrying placards with slogans such as “Behead those who insult Islam”, death to those who insult Islam and various references to 9/11 and Europe had better watch out, you’re next etc.

This comes on the same day that the UK popularity party (Labour) appears to be putting pressure on the human fertilisation and embryology authority to reject a proposal that would aid stem cell research. Why? Public opposition! The BBC website shows 60% of responders *in favour* of the research! Only 500ish responses to the white paper – predominantly from *faith groups*.

If they are correct in thinking that oil could be generated in such a short time, the oil co’s wouldn’t spend millions of $’s drilling a well – they could dump a load of organic material at sea, bury it with a few tons of clay and then produce oil from it a month or so later.

    Well noodles,

Remember that post I made in the past few days where I said that if I walked into your temple and was treated to the abuse you were giving me, I wouldnt be inclined to take to your faith… well what do you know…?

It looks like maybe the FSM isnt much of a God if that is how nice his followers are…

And well, are those big science meanies picking on me? well, in case you hadnt noticed my shoulders havent had any problems so far… and I dont see any coming.

And again, funny how the only people who have ever been talking about conspiracies are the ones who turned out to be orchestrating one to win Dawkins a BBC online award. hmmm.

All in all a very interesting experience :-D

And as for the feathers, well, as I said I have an ancient machine on dial up and cant download pdfs.

But if anyone can actually NAME a fossil I could cross ref it, well, then you might see some sparks!

Anyway, someone at the top of this blog said they thought I didnt like some of the people on the BBC blog, but you’re way off the mark.

I dont take any of this personally, to me it is ALL about testing ideas. I dont know, I read some of your stuff and doubtless many people have met many pretty nasty people who came in the name of God, so I cant say I would blame all of you for having a chip on the shoulder against people who called themselves Christians (Jesus will decide if they were or not).

For what its worth, I’m not a supporter of GW Bush, I dont believe the church’s first priority is to control the state. I wear jeans to church, I like a cigar, I like a beer and I like pasta (maybe there’s hope for me yet ;-) ).

Also, I have no connection whatsoever to any creationist group, nor do I subscribe to any modern “statements of faith”. And I am not a young earther as I have never examined the subject in detail.

But on the other hand I’m not going to tell you I dumping Jesus or the bible just to please you. The only thing I might ask is that if you look CLOSELY at my posts on BBC hopefully you will see I have almost never ever been nasty to any of you and am just a layman trying to test whether evolution works in my head or not.

I have no reason to attack or dislike any of you guys (apart from what I read above) but hey, you have all got a good sense of humour and I forgive you already…you rascals (that goes for you too Klaver!)

(Tomorrow is a new day though ;-) )

They pick the attitude up off the conmen they worship, the ones raking in the money!
I think that is just one of their big mistakes. They don’t realise that lack of education doesn’t make someone a gullible idiot willing to swallow their rubbish. On the contrary, many of the unindoctrinated/uneducated may be a little more street wise and see through the style of con rhetoric they use.

    Evangelicalism is big business!
    .
“….Mackay’s partner, Ken Ham, who later went on to establish Answers in Genesis in the USA, appears to have, likewise, deeply fallen out with the Australians behind Creation Ministries. Indeed, in what again looks to be internal power struggles that threatened Ham’s position as head of Answers in Genesis, Creation Ministries was split off from Answers in Genesis in early 2006.
What looks to have happened is that in the power struggle between Ken Ham and the Australians at what was then AiG Australia, Ham completely out manoeuvred them.
Creation Ministries International now basically consists of the main Australian founding arm of Answers in Genesis plus the former sister AiG operations in Canada, South Africa and New Zealand. However, CMI looks to be establishing new operations in the USA and the UK. We understand that this is partly the result of a “trade war” with Answers in Genesis in the USA over subscriptions to the organisations’ creationist journal…..”

    I am talking about;
    1) No obviously transitional species exisiting eg birds or bats with half wings or limbs or eyes. ie all animals are perfect and complete by creationism standards.
    2) Transitional limbs being a definite liablity in natural selection.
    3) No evidence aparent to me, admittedly a layman, that puts evolution ahead of creationism; ie both are required to be replicated in a lab. The examples of antibodies is cited by other authorities as “differention” and does not produce new species in the normal sense.

Boy, I was gone from the FSM forums for a day and look at the flurry of activity I missed! So, here is some catching up for me.

    Welcome pb!!
As the person who got this ton of FSM-BBC blog crossover started, I welcome you to the website of your new faith. I see you are quoting aticles on Chinese fossils that maintain that birds were around 150 million years ago already. So much for your 6000-year-old creationism then. It is so heart-warming to see the positive influence Pastafarianism is already having on your life. Keep your heart open to the FSM and soon you will be one of us.

To the veterans on this site: have I not been doing my Pastafarian duties well lately? My drumming up of votes for Dawkins has eventually brought pb over here (because he thinks he has uncovered major evindence of a conspiracy in our forums). So we have a half-converted new soul among us. And while he is still finsihing his conversion, he can provide us with religious/hate mail. Our ship was running low on that lately. Thank goodness you’ve come pb.

And on a personal note I see another name suggesting a newly added Dutch presence. Ramen, whoever you are kidd, Ramen. May you, along with pb and all others, be touched by his noodly appendages!

Then a small admission. Pb has made me doubt evolution a tiny little bit. He has been dodging my questions on the BBC blog fow weeks now. It is really quite cowardly. This would seem to contradict common ancestry, or at least common recent ancestry. While most of us share a branch of evolution with apes, from his cowardice he seems to have more in common with weasles.

I don’t mean this to sound condescending, it’s just the way I talk sometimes, if you’re having so much trouble with understanding evolution, I would suggest a face to face discussion with someone who has studied biology, preferably not a particularily religious person, no reason for said person not to have faith, but a heavy dose of religious indoctrination could force them to subconsciously undermine the theory of evolution as they explain it.
While I’m talking, theory means tested, the theory of evolution has been more heavily tested than the laws of thermodynamics to my knowledge. Noone at all has ever disproved it, the first person who does will get a big cheque and a trip to Stockholm.
About the person of the year vote, do you honestly think that there are enough of us to change the outcome so much? Thanks for the complement to our Church, but there are plenty of atheists around not here who I’m sure voted for him too.

You can class them by religion (christian, muslim, scientologist, etc), by politics (liberal, tory, republican, etc), personal outlook (optimist, pessimist) and in other fields at least, the philosophy they feel best applies (eg. Not having a go at you or anything, but please don’t mention pbs name to me personally again. He is a troll and I’ve had reading his BS up to my limit. I’m am sure you know what I mean. I’ve just been over to the BBC blog and he is still going on about “the big Pastafarian conspiracy” lol
Seems you are getting the balme for all of it too. :(
That’ll teach you to call him out with your feathers :)
Anyway I’m kind of busy with some rather serious stuff at present, so I’ve got better things to do with my time.
Might get Wench Nikkiee to pay him a visit sometime in the near future, if she is not too busy.

    @Pastafarian #5,
With you on the troll verdict. Although I take it as a compliment to us Pastafarians that we are seen as a force serious enough to form dangerous conspiracies and plots to take over the world. The day we discover a CIA or Mossad agent has infiltrated our ranks to keep an eye on our ‘dangerous’ club will be a monumental day for us, I feel. What better endosement as being taken serious can you get?
I’m not a native English speaker, what does “getting the balme” mean? If it means giving up, then you’re wrong. I’m just shifting to a different approach. Pb has been adressed often enough, I don’t think he has any credit left even among hard-line creationists. So now I’m going to see if they will stand up for him openly or distance themselves from him. I can imagine two scenarios that would both suit me fine.
    1) they will denounce him as an utter arse themselves. Suits me fine.
    2) none of them will speak out on his behalf. That is the scenario sofar. Suits me fine too, and I will occasionally point out the absence of support for him.
If they do speak out on his behalf I’ll just have to see what they say before deciding how to carry on.

    .
“Suits me fine too, and I will occasionally point out the absence of support for him.”
    .
Don’t overdo it too much or you’ll sound like he does. He continually uses what’s called an “argument from popularity” hence the constant “200 scientists”. The majority of people generally find it an annoying declaration no matter what the social/business situation.
You seem to do a good job of showing his ignorance and the deception in his declared intentions pretty well. But you are right, he must be embarrassing the hell out of the other creationists. I can only imagine how much the non-extremist Christians are cringing if they are reading his posts and I’d say there might be quite a few of those following along. They certainly won’t be happy with this fanatical money hungry cult, the creationist/ID gang, bringing cristianity into increasingly ill disrepute by their sleazy behaviour. Anyway I’ve really got to get back to some serious work.
Don’t let on about any more of our major conspiracies will you :) Especially the plan to take over mars from the martians. Mum’s the word ;)
    Good luck.

I read an article a few months back in “MicroMart” (a UK weekly computer magazine – pretty cynical but certainly not sensationalist) about MI5 using webcrawlers on blog sites to look for signs of terrorist activity, I think the latest liquid explosives and US / UK aircraft was stopped that way.
Apparently they search for keywords. Probably bomb, sarin, tabun, plutonium, gas centrifuge etc.
There were stories a few years ago about the joint GCHQ/NSA establishment in Cheltenham doing the same with ‘phone calls.

Oh I see, the blame for the grand Pastafarian conspiracy to vote Dawkins. Well, I did post the message here encouraging Pastafarians to go over to the BBC blog site and vote. And it was somewhat effective. I will happily take any blame, in fact I’m a little proud of it! Call me smug if you will.
I think Dawkins is very good. The Selfish Gene is his only book I ever read, but even though it’s 30 years old already, it was a fascinating read. And not because of the occasional atheist message in it (not that much of it in there anyway), but because of the fascinating biology that is presented. The chapter on genetics in insects is a brilliant read. Even creationists woud be fascinated if they cared to do any reading beyond the AiG website. I also found the Monte Carlo modeling of succesful survival strategies very interesting.
And Beastly Rich, #1 will be pleased indeed. And #1 could use some good news after that scare where one of the double OO’s almost got him. How’s #1’s white-grey cat? Every time I visit him he’s stroking that animal lying on his lap.

Stupidity is forgivable, it’s not the person’s fault they’re not as intellegent as you, ignorance on the other hand is purposful, and rude if someone tries to explain to you, that’s why I said he should talk to someone who has studied biology, if you’re face to face with someone, it really is just too much to ask a question and ignore the answer, on the internet he can just skim posts, not really reading them at all

@ Clapran – I totally agree – ignorance in this case is very rude – I wasn’t expressing myself very well as my ears are still bleeding!
@Alchemist – why were you in the doghouse – sounds perfectly reasonable to me – when we had our radiation lesson at school they had some stuff in a leadlined box – they got it out and waved a gigacounter over it which ticked alarmingly – then they put it away and told us it was “safe” –
“So wave the gigacounter over the box then” I said
The teacher refused initially, but when a few of us insisted she did – and the think ticked quite a bit again!!!!
Needless to say I was not impressed with her explanation that it was perfectly safe!

I always loved playing with the bunsen burners in Chemistry, there were two or three of us who kept trying to get the biggest flames, easily amused, I know. People also set the fire alarms off all the time doing flame tests in chemistry, and because my school was so old and made of wood, well, the building with the labs at any rate, we all had to get out while they made sure the school wasn’t burning down, usually took the best part of a whole class.

Hahaha. I’m one of the “did I just think that or say it out loud” types.
School chemistry was an absolute laugh. Did you do the ‘turn on all the gas taps and switch the gas off at the mains’ trick. Or plug a burner into the water tap? We used to play “sink chemistry”. Pour whatever you could get your hands on into the sink and see what happens. Magnesium ribbon used to disappear faster than booze at an Oliver Reid party.
Of course, we grew up and more sensible.

Where the hell were your teachers?
I went to a private school, so I guess they were more concerned with us wasting their precious money!

@ booty, Uraninite is uranium and thorium dioxide, the ore of uranium (otherwise known as pitchblende)

I was making an reference to it being radioactive and thus enough of it together makes the house warm through radioactive decay. Awww! now look! I just explained the joke!
    .
Anyway, they got so much of this stuff out of the mines in the nineteenth century in heaps that would be considered radioactive waste today, not so much in this part of cornwall, but st. austell was well known all kinds of rare radioactive minerals.

I always thought the iodine snake was great fun, again, easily amused. The gas mains were in a different room to the chemistry lab, big room, split in two, one half was physics, where nothing worked, the other half was chemistry, where volatile chemicals were stored on old wooden shelves right above the radiators, with a crack on the wall behind them, we weren’t really allowed near the chemicals very often…

Best thing we did in high school chemistry class was mixing Al file dust and grains of I. If you put water on that mix, it will produce thick purple smoke. So we thought up two good gags:
    1) put a mixture of the two in the sink on a day when you know the teacher will demonstrate some little test. In the end he pours the water used in the test down the sink and……class laughed for minutes.
    2) put a mixture of the two in the plant pots. We were not there unfortunately when they were watered and it was bhefore the time when you would have installed a stealthy wbcam somewhere. But you can imagine.

Whenever we hear a fire siren out at our uni, we make bets on its destination being the chem building and the possible causes for the call out. 9 times out of 10 that’s exactly where it ends up!

Booty. I also attended one of those schools (not a girls one, mores the pity). Our teachers believed in trust. Stupid really :)
    .
Nikkiee, one of my chemistry teachers did end up in hospital after demonstrating the Thermite Reaction :)
    .
Clapran. Iodine is fun! Try reacting it with ammonia and drying the crystals? That stuff is a laugh :)
And yes, I have ended up in hospital once. It wasn’t my fault though. The valve on a cylinder of sulphur dioxide has rusted. When I turned it on it broke and I couldn’t shut it off! Spent the night in a chest ward ‘cos my pO2 levels were low (96%).

I always had a problem (when I couldn’t be assed wearing gloves) with Crystal Violet when doing gram stains. (BTW I’m quite well known for my excellent gram stains….true)
Without fail I’d pick up the bottle after someone had sloppily spilt it all down the sides and have to walk around with purple hands (often wiped onto my labcoat as well) for most of the day. When your in a microbio building everyone knows what it is as well.
    It was kind of embarrassing.
