Did anyone catch Rick Warren and Jon Meacham on Meet the Press Sunday?

When asked about Sam Harris’ books Warren responded -

“…..Sam is overlooking the 20th century. Because the truth of the 20th century is more people were killed in the 20th century by atheist governments than all Christian ideas throughout history combined. When you look at the godless communism, and, and Nazism—which in itself was, was we’re the ruler—tens and tens of millions, maybe a hundred million people were killed in the 20th century by atheists, not by believers. So yes, you can go back to the Crusades, and they were wrong. They were flat out wrong. But let’s take the most recent history. Atheists were what caused the most people—Stalin was an atheist, Mao was an atheist, Hitler was an atheist. He was an occultist, actually. And, and so let’s just make sure that history is told.”

Lots of other interesting discussion there.

Plenty of comments on the Dawkins threads reguarding whether all these people were killed in the name of atheism or not. Many of those commenting in those forums appear to present indepth knowledge/research rather than the just the broard claims presented by most of the theists on this issue. The concensus seems to be (going by the vast number and variety of references provided), that Hitler indeed paid homage to the church during his spree.

This picture looks like some of my dates when I was younger. *sigh*

    @ Re-Oared Marc

I dated a blind girl when I was younger. She was all hands. Well, she wanted to “see” what I looked like, innit. All over. Quite nice, actually.

I dated someone who was seeing-impaired as well when I was young. It was a very sensual experience and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

  13. 13 - December 28th, 2006 at 5:48 pm - Mad John Kidd Says:

Seeing-impaired, my bad. We didn’t we have pc back then. She referred to herself as blind and had no qualms about it. Heard she got married but have not seen her for many years. Sure she is well. She had a good head on her shoulders.

I think Warren was responding to Sam Harris’ accusation about religious beliefs being the cause of so many deaths and oppression in history. In that light I accept Warren’s accretion that atheists should be held to the same scrutiny. Personally I don’t really see religion belief (or non belief) as the cause of war, killing etc. as much as human nature. WWII was more a power, resource and commodity grab than anything else. The Crusades and earlier Jihad (Muslim empire stretching to the Rock of Gibraltar) were more political than religious.

Whilst we sea faring types be mostly peace lovin’ I expect if all the world were pirates we would surely be at each others throats over gold and other booty, I do. Arrrgghh.

    .
I don’t think belief in religion, is a cause of war either.
But, no doubt using religion as an excuse, has worked forever to promote wars.
And these jihad guys, well, I just don’t know that much about them, they don’t know that much about themselves, for that matter.

Yeah. The theists always try to tie in acts of Hitler et. al. with atheism and lack of morality.
Funny, how in my country alone. thousands upon thousands of non-believers (atheists) put their age up to enlist, so as to go and fight Hitler.
It all goes back to that same old myth the theists always claim.
Hitler and Stalin, among others were also about political power, not a dogma of atheism.

    .
    Spot on Peter.
Also, one of the biggest atrocities going on at present in the name of religious dogma, is the anti-comdom campaign in AIDS rife areas of developing countries. Many women in these places don’t even have the choice of consensual sex (”abstainence solution”) that is agressively pushed by missionaries from the religious right. Abstainence only preaching has been not only a dismal failure, but has seen rising numbers of AIDS cases where it has been implemented. The abstinence only growd and the governments that support them get quite a big chunk of the funding from Mr Bush.

Purchase the Gospel

An elaborate spoof on Intelligent Design, The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is neither too elaborate nor too spoofy to succeed in nailing the fallacies of ID. It's even wackier than Jonathan Swift's suggestion that the Irish eat their children as a way to keep them from being a burden, and it may offend just as many people, but Henderson, described elsewhere as a 25-year-old "out-of-work physics major," puts satire to the same serious use that Swift did. Oh, yes, it is very funny. -- Scientific American
