Interesting that you mention Pastafarian weddings. In part of the UK (Scotland) you can have humanist weddings. Unfortunately not in England or Northern Ireland yet. An attempt was made to get them authorised in N-Ireland too, but that failed. So there is actually a good bit of ‘marriage travel’ going on. People from other parts of the UK who want humanist weddings have them in Scotland. Anyone who would want a Pastafarian wedding could probably have an authorised humanist conduct the wedding and you would likely be free to give the event as much Pastafarian flavouring as you like.
I’m looking forward to seeing Scotland become a pirate marital haven. So if you want to marry that special someone but she has doubts, then be a good pirate, kidnap your love, and sail her in your pirate ship to a (cutless, not shotgun) wedding in Scotland.

Sorry to disagree with you, julien, but it is not Christianity itself that I have a problem with, it is the fundies. Fundies of any sort are annoying at best and dangerous at worst no matter what their religious affiliation. Our Creator, the FSm, wants us to spread the word, surely, but to force feed our faith upon others would render us no better than them. And just how does Pastafarian heaven, with a beer volcano and a stripper factory, constitute any form of punishment by death. Blasphemy is simply a bad idea.
Concerning Beastly Rich’s cakes, I would hope that when the tequila wears off they would return to their Pastafarian ways. One can only hope and pray to the FSM.

@julien: No blasphemy is ever punishable by death. Christmas is not necessarily a Christian holiday. If you really look at the facts you’ll see that Jesus was more likely born in the spring, but it does not correspond with the Christian advent calender from birth to death. Many of the Christmas traditions come from Norse and Wiccan origins. The Yule festival is on the solstice and is crowned with evergreen wreaths. The Norse god Wotan travels on a sleigh pulled by his white horse to grant wishes to the good and beat the naughty with a yew switch - an obvious reference to Santa Clause.

Hi Mad John. Hope you had a nice food/drink fest with family/friends.
I did gather quite a little interested audience at our pagan lunch celebration, when I started to expound on my new religion. Wish that I’d had taken a few more brochures with me. As it was, I only quickly printed off one for the householder at the last minute before my lift was due to depart to said gathering.
I didn’t pass that one around either, due to past experience of myself being one of the first targets of the kids (now traditional) water bombs. The kids were right on cue too. I was the second one drenched once they started!
Hahahaha…sorry, I didn’t mean to laugh at you, I was just imagining the look on your wet face. Can’t part with tradition now. Sounds like a fun lot you have there. (Well, maybe not for the target, anyway.)
Congrats on your conversion excursion. Today was my annual “listen to mum talk about life when she was a little girl” day. Most of the stories I’ve heard before, but occasionally she pops in a new one. I tolerate it because tomorrow is Boxing Day and me and dad will watch the footie and put back a few pints all day. So mum deserves to have her day before that.
Oh and I talked to me mate who owns the theatre company. I told him about the play that the group in California did and he is interested in doing something similar. Plus there is a guy next door who has a print shop and will do a deal printing out full-colour brochures for us to hand out. Something for next spring, but I’m already excited about spreading the word.

I refill all my ink cartridges myself , so full colour is very inexpensive to produce.
I did all of the ones I took out to the uni at end of semester celebrations in full colour because I wanted people to keep them and have a good look at it when sober! (in case they didn’t remember how much they liked the idea when they were drunk)
I lurve me mum, but we have never seen eye to eye…on anything. She is always RIGHT and I am always WRONG. Having said that, I understand that it is merely her way of telling me she lurves me, so I don’t let it get to me and she would probably lose respect for me if I abandoned standing my ground now. We’ve never come to blows or anything and it is not as bad as it sounds, we just lurve to ARGUE. However, she does have a sense of humour, is quite taken with the FSM and can’t stand the fundies or this thing going on over in Kansas either (so I guess we DO have that in common). Me dad just shakes his head with a grin and stays out of it. Think I’ll make a noodly topper for her tree next year. :)

I’ve got a b/w laser printer for my reports, quite the little workhorse, coming up on my one millionth page printed on that machine. The ink jet printers get used up to fast in my experience. For the colour stuff I go to a print shop. It’s tax-deductable for me anyway.
Kudos on the uni job. And it’s almost tomorrow here. We can actually get more matches here in the states now than me mates back in the UK. We’ve got five matches line up. Cable is really cool.

Yeah :) I gave the first ~15yo niece who got me the choice of putting her head underwater in the pool herself or having me do it for her. She chose the latter!
Hahahaha. Was quite funny watching her bending over the kiddy pool with her head submerged. She is actually a very good swimmer, as in medals/trophies ect and a lifesaver to boot. Should’ve taken a pic. Fact is I got caught up in the FSM discussion and forgot to take any pics. Lucky they don’t all rely on me anymore for the party pics. They all camera mobiles now, so no problem. The kids have learnt who will laugh when they get drenched and who won’t. I remember a couple of years ago they did it to the wrong person, who was not a happy camper for a few hours afterwards. Xmas day here is a pretty much pool/creek/beach day coz of the heat. Quite refreshing to sit around in wet clothes eating and drinking. I live in sarongs in summer, so no biggy.

Perfect apparel for where I live. Jeans in winter and sarongs in summer. How easy is that? The first two things I aquired technical training in were ‘do on your own time’ ones i.e. self employment/hobby/enjoyment. Photography and patternmaking (fashion design).
I can’t imagine how improve on jeans and sarongs though. Simple, comfortable and practical.
Found out after completing training (twice) that great grandfather was Warsaw tailor and that my father had been an avid amateur photographer during enlistment. (including a self taught command of darkroom techniques) Have some handed down B&W photos (for which I have since made negatives) of some of his WWII war pics.
I had undertaken both these pursuits quite a long way away from my family.
Creative pursuits have been my path as well. Too tired to go into it now, maybe next time. Interesting family history, Nik. Something to be proud of.

I think sometimes religious indoctrination can be a good thing. My father got his nose well and truely shoved into Catholic religion during his childhood at school he was sent to. I remember when I were were quite young, that the Jehovers came to the door (don’y they always?) and my younger sister answered it. My father yelled out from within the house ‘who is it’ (he’d probably already heard!…as he was quite close to door at time) sister replied and father yelled out quite loudly (sure others in street heard too) ‘tell them I’m not home’ ! hahahaha
Another ocassion, yelled out ‘tell them we have enough toilet paper’! Oh dear! No political correctness in my family when it comes to religion. Bunch of heathens we are, and quite proud of it. Some of other rellies took their ndoctrination a little more seriously though.
Have a cousin my age who is headmistress of Catholic High School. I like her. She doesn’t go there with me! RAmen to her if she should read this. I’m sure she’ll know who I am and who I’m referring to.
I just want to say, that until the more moderate xtians stand up and out voice the fanatics, you are all on the same level in my book. That is how I feel! Social change takes time. Sort it out, without forcing yourselves on the rest of us!

Hahahaha…brilliant!!! My father did something similar to a load of Mormons once. Though he was much more dastardly. He invited them in to talk about the jebus and then asked them if they would mind if he cleaned his shotgun while they chatted. Their eyes remained glued on the shotgun as he cleaned away and he calmly debated certain inconsistencies. They lasted all of ten minutes before they had had enough. Never saw them again.

I keep my copy on the lamp table by the front door so it is the first thing someone sees when they enter. Most of my friends have already had an earful and appreciate the joke but can’t be bothered to pursue it further. But a couple have become really intrigued about doing the play thing. I’m on holidays til after the first so I think we may start preparations tomorrow. We’ll see.

Richard Dawkins was on BBC radio recently, debating with amongst others a UK professor (in either Chemistry or Thermodynamics, don’t remember), Andy McIntosh. McIntosh at some stage claimed that evolution was in contradiction of the second law of thermodynamics. In very oversimplified terms, the second law states that processes always increase the level of disorder. Total disorder that is, isolated parts of a system can gain order at greater expense of other parts (thereby already explaining the error in McIntosh’s claim). At present there are two discussion threads about McIntosh’s blunder at the website of the program that hosted the discussion:

Thanks everyone for voting for Dawkins. The Person of the Year election is going quite nicely. Those who haven’t voted yet, don’t relax too soon. Dawkins is ahead now, but the number of votes for any candidate is still small. If anyone drums up support among Creationists or George W.
