I’m in favour of Trident also. Almost every adult I spoke to in the UK felt that it was a terrible thing and we should go a very long way to try and never use it.
But we have to have it for extreme circumstances that could happen and we can’t second guess now.
Maybe we lack vision but we can’t see another way. If the alternative policy is ‘why can’t everyone like love each other a bit more’ – we’re having trident. And that’s that.
And that’s where my pragmatism comes in. The ‘ten commandments’ are a joke.
Though shalt not kill. Pah.
There isn’t a nation state on earth with a pacifist policy and without even going in to rights and wrongs the US is a squillion million miles from ‘Though Shalt Not Kill’.
That’s one of the things that gets my (pirate) goat with the Christians, they live in this completely artificial world purely of their own making.
They might be ‘base’ their culture on that commandment as in this sentence.
Thou shalt not kill – unless you feel the need to in which case you’ll be killing faster than a US Turkey farmer just before Thanksgiving.

Acceptance of killing doesn’t neccesarily ‘morph’ in to autrocities.
You’re making a ‘thin end of the wedge’ argument. I’m not convinced that ‘a bit of killing’ necessarily leads to ‘a lot of killing’.
We need to evaluate the need to kill on an individual and pragmatic basis.
We should only do it where there is really no alternative to avert a very serious outcome.
This is like the UK police policy on shooting.
They only do it as the only way to avert the imminent loss of human life.
NB: They don’t have a shoot to kill policy but also their policy to (and I don’t remember the phrase) ‘immediately incapacitate with maximum likelihood’ is a policy very likely to lead to fatal injury of the target…
Shooting a man dead whose driving a van with a police officer ’stuck to the front’ is a long way from ‘thou shalt not kill’ but the right course of action.
However such events don’t saction the thicker end of the wedge – e.g. shooting rioters or protesters.
That policy isn’t the thin end of a wedge. However we need to remind ourselves and others of the ethical reasons for it so that it can’t become an exercise in devaluing life – but an exercise in preserving it and prizing it.

I don’t think you don’t need to worry about whether there is Vodka in heaven.
We know there are beer volcanoes and strippers but other things too.

The FSM is clearly a bit of a wild party monster and frankly that means has to be vodka in heaven.

Also, I’d like to point out that Santa has taught those of you with young ones some valuable lesson. Always check the battery size of Santa’s gifts, to make sure it is an easily replaceable/affordable size and always listen to any vocal renditions emerging from same, so as to ascertain how long these emissions can be tolerated before attempted murder on the reciever of the said gift. Comtemplated stangulation is also known to occur in the mind of relative/close friend of those acting on Santa’s behalf and delivering such vocal givings.

The righ wing god botherers force feed children dogma, which is in no way going to help them prepare for the problems of this little green/blue planet, that lay ahead of them.
Force feeding a child, your own religious belief system is not only a crime against that child, but also a crime against society/humanity as a whole. (bugga….that sounds very fundie, doesn’t it?)

I, personally feel just as strongly, about anyone who indoctrinates kids, no matter what the angle of the dogma. Teach them to make their own rational judgements.
trust them, to do so (well after a certain age, of course….we all know about hormones!)
I know I’m not suggesting anything new here, just that I feel very, very strongly about this. If I have a ‘belief’ in anything, it is that I believe we should encourage future generations to think rationally (no imaginary friend required), because, maybe, not individually you and I, but a few generations which preceded them have left them a lot of shit to deal with! Not their fault either! As a absrtactly thinking species, we are learning as we go. I think the kids, should be aware of this fact!
