Regarding your letter to the Kansas school board, Kansas never passed any law requiring or even allowing the teaching of Intelligent Design in public school. The new outlined curriculum instead opened the door to follow the facts of the origin of life to wherever they may lead – which is just good science, isn’t it? The debate had nothing to do with intelligent design, creationism, or evolution, despite how the media reported it or whatever articles they read or whoever raised their voice on the issue. I read the curriculum and I attended the debates. However, the new school board is in, and they’re overturning the curriculum anyway. So there’s nothing to get in a tizzy about. There are other states with more public schools who have accepted ID or creationism into their curriculum than schools in Kansas. For example, despite the Dover decision in Pennsylvania, the state school board does accept challenges to evolution. The Dover decision was only for the Dover school district.

Yeah, the signs sucked… but my phamphlets were awesome.

I made the signs at the last minute, actually there were four signs, but they didn’t pick up too well on camera, they read “Believe in the Flying Spaghetti Monster” “God is real….and made of Pasta” “Gravity is a lie, support intelligent falling” and “Fight Global warming….dress as a Pirate” Unfortunately they didn’t pick up too well on camera. Meh.

P.S. Thanks for the link. May his noodly apendage bless you and yours!

Cap ‘n you mistake what I was saying. I wasn’t claiming that anyone was unintelligent, just we can use our intelligence without attacking those who have done no harm. I know several Christians who keep their beliefs to themselves, who also think the whole idea of teaching ID in science class is mentally deficient. If you argue just as dogmatically as they do, and insult their beliefs without provocation, then you are no better than they are. If they come here and start shit…well they’re fair game…

BTC: The very existence of a competing belief system is considered an insult and an attack on their beliefs by significant numbers of believers. So on that basis, using your logic, this site shouldn’t exist as many believers with other belief systems would consider this site an attack on their beliefs. As witnessed by the many inane posts by such on this section of the site. Part of the problem is the very legitimacy that your moderate good quiet christians give the fundies by not standing up and being counted as being more representative of their belief system.

    As the saying goes;

Wait wait wait. Are you saying that I’m unintelligent or not. Because you say that that isn’t what you are saying in your first statement, and then go on to say that intelligent designers are mentally deficient, however I am no better then they are if I attack their beliefs without “provocation”

I call total and utter bullshit on all of that. Beliefs deserve to be attacked when they are stupid. Would you say that it is ok to let someone have Nazi beliefs or racist beliefs, as long as they aren’t fitting your definition of what is ‘harming’ a society? Of course not. Do you feel that it is important for us to respect adults who believe in Santa Claus? Of course not.

What you get with Christians and Muslims, (and to a slightly lesser extent, Buddhists, Hindus and Jews) is a combination of both of those. The idea that it automatically merits my respect, or even merits my non-mockery of it, simply for being a belief, is a rediculous and frankly dangerous idea. As dangerous as some beliefs are, it is equally dangerous to believe that they should be left alone simply because someone holds to them.

Or do you have another reason for respecting theistic belief?

@ John Phillips: Good quote, I think it is something everyone should keep in mind, however, are you going to hold every member of a specific group accountable for those that they have no control over? Also, I don’t think what the fundamentalists are doing is inherently evil, just really ignorant. And I don’t think my Christian friends stand by while these fundamentalists do they’re work. There is probably a good damn reason that in Alberta intelligent design is not taught in schools, but believe me we have our share of fundamentalists, and I live in the bible belt of that particular province. You also put words in my mouth, you guys have every right to express you’re views on this site without being attacked, I just fail to see why you have to attack the things you do not agree with. Yes, I am a theist, but have I said anything against being an athiest? Hell no! I could care less about something like that. Good people are found regardless of creed, colour, political affiliation. I don’t belong to a church, I don’t preach my beliefs like truth, I don’t try to convert people, and I have a serious problem with organized religion because of people like the ones who post hate on here. As far as my government is concerned I am an atheist…
    .
@ Cap’n: In my first post I said “I’m sure we are all intelligent enough to take the high road.” No where in that des it say that you or anyone else isn’t intelligent. It could imply that… but only if you were looking for it to do that. It was never intended to be taken like that. You made an excellent choice about choosing not to take the high road. According to Sartre, people are human becomings, not human beings. You have to constantly choose who you are and take responsibility for those actions. I think he was right about that, and that is exactly what you did. I disagree with what you have to say, but I don’t think you’re stupid just because I don’t agree with your point of view.
    .
@ Rabbit and Nikkiee- I wasn’t aware that you had to be an atheist to belong or support the cause of the FSM. The we pronoun was directed at everyone on here because of all of the threads I have read have contained much intelligent discussion and wit. The only people clearly lacking intelligence, and I can only judge that by they’re posts, are the fundamentalists that curse while extolling the virtue of they’re tolerant religion, because God loves you. So unless I miss my mark we, the people viewing this website, are intelligent. If I offended you by the use of we I could use I, but that would sound a little smug…

-the point of this whole thing was never to slander anyone’s beliefs-Well that is a very nice idea, but I not sure you’ve been paying attention. The point of this whole site and the FSM himself is really to make fun of the idea of ID, and the notion that it should be allowed in schools to be taught as though it were fact.-Which,yes,is sort of like slandering that belife.

  32. 32 - BrianTheCanuck - Nov 21st, 2006

    I was paying attention Penne…
Some are questioning why I, as a theist, would be on this site.
I don’t think this site is slandering the religion at all, just the silly notion that a belief should be taught as a science. Personally I don’t want my beliefs measured and weighed… Besides which you could not, at the present moment, prove or disprove anything… hence why they’re called beliefs, and hence why this concept works so beautifully. I may have missed the point so I copied from the F.A.Q. on this site. These are Bobby Henderson’s words, not mine.
    .
Q: Are you an atheist / heathen / what?
    .
A: I don’t have a problem with religion. What I have a problem with is religion posing as science. Teach Creationism in school, fine, but don’t teach it in a science classroom. And don’t change the definition of science so that you can teach these things. That’s retarded.
Supernatural explanations are by definition not science, so why would you teach them in a science classroom?
    .
Religion, itself, isn’t bad. But it isn’t necessarily good, either. There are plenty of good Christians (and Muslims, and Buddhists, and Hindus), and plenty of bad ones.
    .
    Dogma is bad for everyone.
    .
And that is simply what I have been trying to argue as well.

Religion itself isn’t bad,no, but there are a lot of out-dated, and by todays standards, offencive rules and ideas in many of them, that the people on this site(me too) just don’t like . I myself have only been comming her a few weeks and already I am tired of seeing the crap these guys have to take for expressing their fustration and personal belifes and beefs with said rules and ideas. I can certainly understand if they are a little touchy when a newbie comes here and talks in a manner that makes them feel as if you are demeaning them. Now,being from Canada myself, and knowing some people from out west I know that this is just how most of you talk and you probably don’t even reilise it.But most people who come here are from different parts of the world and they know that not everybody talks the same way, even if we all speak english,so they seem to(usally) say things as plainly as possibly so no one gets the wrong idea. Except J ,some days I have no clue what that guy is talking about.

I don’t remember saying I was atheist, but you can have much better conversations with people who don’t try to ’save your soul’ because you’re not the right kind of theist, that’s why I said you couldn’t get an intelligent conversation from a fundie.

@ Penne: I take your point and I realize that these guys who are backing this have to put up with many ignorant people clinging to outdated ideas. I think these ideas need to be updated as well, and it was never my intnet to demean anyone, except those who come and curse, and claim to be something they are clearly not.
@ Rabbit- I never said you were an athiest… I was addressing you and Nikkiee at once, “Brian is a theist (stated continuously in his posts) Cap’n Awesome. Still trying to work out what he is doing at our church.”… and your absolutely right! You can have a much better conversation, even if it is about a touchy subject such as religion, as long as they are willing to listen to and consider your point of view. Otherwise the conversation is dogmatic. But upon rereading my first post I realize that I forgot to include that part. I apologize.

We argue because we like to argue, and the arguement is what recruits more to our cause. The point is to argue, or at least talk about religion in general. It is good to have faith in religion – whichever religion it may be. Just don’t allow that religion to control your life. Don’t allow that religion to dictate what is fact because religion is just theory anyway.

@Branded Cow-good post, I agree with you on that.
    .
And now for the rest of the story…
You know, I didn’t belittle anyone’s beliefs- I could care less what you believe in. Really. No foolin’. And I don’t think I’m smarter, better, stronger, faster, or anything else than anyone else, but if you thought that maybe you have some self-image problems. So I’m not sure what you had to defend from me, but one thing is clear I’m not wanted here, and my very presence causes discomfort among the ranks. I may suggest to you Swabbies that a number of the supporters are exactly the ones who you may be referring to when you talk about only wanting to belittle and argue with other’s beliefs. I could point out several threads where the main concern of some postings has been to make the beliefs of any organized religion look stupid. And I think that is missing the point of the FSM entirely. It’s not about which religion is right, it isn’t blasphemous, and it sure isn’t to poke fun at what groups of other people believe, it is a remarkable piece of satire that illustrates just how stupid the idea of blending faith and science is. And I don’t waffle. Yes, I can argue several sides of any one topic, and yes I have beliefs that don’t seem to mesh well together, but they are mine and I sure don’t have to explain them to anyone. I’m sick of having to explain myself when someone who is a little sensitive takes things the wrong way, and I’m sick of associating with fundamentalists. Like it or not there are a number of supporters of FSM that are fundamentalists. Upon suggesting that science perhaps doesn’t have all the answers, one is likely to get heckled and jeered, in much the same way the Christian fundamentalists talk down upon you.
    .
A science that can’t be challenged or questioned isn’t much of a science- it’s Dogma plain and simple. This idea started out great, but has turned into a group of children making fun of each other, of course that doesn’t refer to everyone…ah, Hell take it which ever way you like, I no longer care about avoiding toes. The fundamentalists berate you for insulting their God, you laugh at them for worshipping an invisible man…and that circle never ends. I have read precious few posts regarding the original intnet of either getting ID dropped from schools or getting FSM added.
    .
    .
For those of you with whom I have had enlightening conversations and debates: Thank you, it truly was a pleasure and I had hoped such things would continue, however it was not to be. This post isn’t aimed at you, take no offence; I respected what you had to say and have considered it much. I hope you all know who you are, because I won’t be back to list names. For those that I never had the pleasure of encountering: I apologize if I offended you and you didn’t fit into the above.
    .
And for those that just wanted me to go away know this: I’m not going away mad, I’m just going away. Feel free to take potshots at my spelling, gramar, punctuation, family, or whatever else pleases you because I will not be back to defend myself. I’ll never darken this site again.
    .
Don’t worry Swabbie the bad man is gone, and you’ll never have to defend yourslef from me ever again.
    .
    .
Bobby you have had your fun, and made an often misunderstood point, but a once great concept has fallen into the toilet- time to flush and start again.

An elaborate spoof on Intelligent Design, The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is neither too elaborate nor too spoofy to succeed in nailing the fallacies of ID. It's even wackier than Jonathan Swift's suggestion that the Irish eat their children as a way to keep them from being a burden, and it may offend just as many people, but Henderson, described elsewhere as a 25-year-old "out-of-work physics major," puts satire to the same serious use that Swift did. Oh, yes, it is very funny. -- Scientific American
