I can get along with all you fine people as long as you don’t tell me that the Easter Bunny is not real. I know you want to believe in him.

Excellent Vid; Cap’n Awesome! Good job!
And I’m not sure what that poster meant, that said we are only here it argue?
Speaking for myself of course, I’m here to worship pasta and booze!
As they both mean much to me and are held close to my heart.
I will however defend my beliefs against the Jesus Police, and against the likes
of “BrianTheCanuck” and his type who seem to only want to belittle and argue with other beliefs, that don’t jive with them, while flip flopping on their own beliefs for the sake of arguing. I just don’t get that at all?
At any rate, Great Vid! Keep up the good work!

    Peace and,
    RAmen

A very awesome preaching! May his Noodly Appendage Bless You All!

Ah, I see. The explosion makes perfect sense now. Good Video!
(Not to randomly insert myself into the argument sprouting up here, but I don’t see any issue with a follower of something else being able to support His Holyness the FSM as well. Seeing as how that’s exactly what I’ve been doing since like….September? I think?)

  5. 45 BrianTheCanuck Nov 21st, 2006 at 8:50 pm

@Branded Cow-good post, I agree with you on that.
    .
And now for the rest of the story…
You know, I didn’t belittle anyone’s beliefs- I could care less what you believe in. Really. No foolin’. And I don’t think I’m smarter, better, stronger, faster, or anything else than anyone else, but if you thought that maybe you have some self-image problems. So I’m not sure what you had to defend from me, but one thing is clear I’m not wanted here, and my very presence causes discomfort among the ranks. I may suggest to you Swabbies that a number of the supporters are exactly the ones who you may be referring to when you talk about only wanting to belittle and argue with other’s beliefs. I could point out several threads where the main concern of some postings has been to make the beliefs of any organized religion look stupid. And I think that is missing the point of the FSM entirely. It’s not about which religion is right, it isn’t blasphemous, and it sure isn’t to poke fun at what groups of other people believe, it is a remarkable piece of satire that illustrates just how stupid the idea of blending faith and science is. And I don’t waffle. Yes, I can argue several sides of any one topic, and yes I have beliefs that don’t seem to mesh well together, but they are mine and I sure don’t have to explain them to anyone. I’m sick of having to explain myself when someone who is a little sensitive takes things the wrong way, and I’m sick of associating with fundamentalists. Like it or not there are a number of supporters of FSM that are fundamentalists. Upon suggesting that science perhaps doesn’t have all the answers, one is likely to get heckled and jeered, in much the same way the Christian fundamentalists talk down upon you.
    .
A science that can’t be challenged or questioned isn’t much of a science- it’s Dogma plain and simple. This idea started out great, but has turned into a group of children making fun of each other, of course that doesn’t refer to everyone…ah, Hell take it which ever way you like, I no longer care about avoiding toes. The fundamentalists berate you for insulting their God, you laugh at them for worshipping an invisible man…and that circle never ends. I have read precious few posts regarding the original intnet of either getting ID dropped from schools or getting FSM added.
    .
    .
For those of you with whom I have had enlightening conversations and debates: Thank you, it truly was a pleasure and I had hoped such things would continue, however it was not to be. This post isn’t aimed at you, take no offence; I respected what you had to say and have considered it much. I hope you all know who you are, because I won’t be back to list names. For those that I never had the pleasure of encountering: I apologize if I offended you and you didn’t fit into the above.
    .
And for those that just wanted me to go away know this: I’m not going away mad, I’m just going away. Feel free to take potshots at my spelling, gramar, punctuation, family, or whatever else pleases you because I will not be back to defend myself. I’ll never darken this site again.
    .
Don’t worry Swabbie the bad man is gone, and you’ll never have to defend yourslef from me ever again.
    .
    .
Bobby you have had your fun, and made an often misunderstood point, but a once great concept has fallen into the toilet- time to flush and start again.

Wow Brian, I certianly didn’t mean for you to take it like that! I for one hope you do come back, the fact is most of us here do enjoy a good arguement and almost all of the people that come here only like to swear and spew nonsensical cuss words at us,while you had lots of good points to make and did at least get conversations started.Your really just getting to know us but if you must leave then I do hope you find a site more to your liking eleswere.-Penne

  12. 52 The Mighty Joshus Nov 22nd, 2006 at 1:01 pm

This truly takes great meatballs, as the first entry said. You, my friend, are an inspiration to all Pastafarians. So what if the signs sucked? You went out there and preached for our Holy Lord. Great job, Cap’n Awesome. May you be Touched By His Noodly Appendage throughout your life.

  13. 53 Penne Nov 22nd, 2006 at 1:06 pm

-Cap’n Awesome-Back off my turff! I cliamed this joint first so there’ll be no whore’n for you! Now stop trying to noodle-in on my gig! :

  14. 54 Colleen Nov 22nd, 2006 at 1:58 pm

I have some suggestions. Your heart is in the right place but you need to work on the details. The sign is fine it does not have to be fancy, it got the point across, and I am not going to nit pick on timing issues. I have a lot of experience as a member of the MSU chapter. There is power in numbers, I know you at least had yourself and the cameraman, but bringing a couple of people into it makes you look less like the town crazy. A huge problem I have seen people have is the difference between talking and harassing. I know that sounds harass but let me explain. Talk to those that wish to and don’t push it on others. I push pamphlets pretty hard because they can ignore it after they leave. I understand that I am ranting but I just see a lot of common mistakes.

  15. 55 Cap'n Awesome Nov 22nd, 2006 at 2:22 pm

Ummmm…ok, Colleen, the point was to look like a town crazy. Are you expecting me to set up a both and politely speak the advantages of our noodly lord and savior?

  16. 56 Joel Nov 22nd, 2006 at 2:37 pm

You truly have been touched by his noodly appendage. You make us all proud.

Awwww, come on Brian, we just like a good argument is all. Don’t go away. I actually agree with most of what you said, I’ve said it myself. I don’t have any problem with people having religion,I don’t care what religion you are. I don’t provoke people (usualy)
The things I hate are when the fundies or born agains get up in my face or try to shove thier stuff on me or insult me first or think their better than everyone else, then I insult them to my hearts content. I also hate religion trying to pose as science, which is why I came here in the first place. That being said, please don’t deprive yourself of this wonderful site. You were very polite and intelligent. A good conversationalist.
    RAmen.

Cap’n Awesome is the man who introduced me to The Flying Spaghetti Monster. So I was inspired to make this video:

If that didn’t work I E-mailed Bobby the link for the video.

BTC: The point I was making with the quote was that while I hear both christians and muslims decry the fundies in their ranks as unrepresentative of their religion they rarely actively try to counter them, even on an intellectual level. Or at least, not with with the same passion as the fundies espouse their particular brand of hate. Some of this is to do with the tolerance, at least in the West, to differing ideas, but there must come a point where we must stand up and say that we can no longer tolerate the intolerable as our very tolerance is being used against us. I believe that there is a quote by a US christian fundamentalist where he uses our tolerance as an apparent winning debating point in an argument with opponents as I have heard many radical muslims in the UK say that they will use our tolerance and values as a means to defeats us, implying that we are too weak to fight for what we really want as a society and so radical islam will win more by default rather than any need for actual battle. There is an element of truth in this as many in the West simply want to get on with their lives without bother and are likely to see the danger too late. Much as happened with Germany in the thirties where the memories of the horrors of WWI was still uppermost in many peoples thoughts and none wanted to believe that it could happen again even though all the signs where there.

Unfortunately, this often means that the fundies voice is the one heard the loudest as is sadly is often the case nowadays and especially the one heard loudest and clearest by the disaffected and simple minded and which they latch on to. Witness the number of societies’ malcontents and disenfranchised who have been recruited, such as the so called shoe bomber. We see a certain similarity with the type of activists recruited by many racist groups such as the BNP in the UK. Of course, in many ways, it is not the brainwashed activist we need to counter so much as the brain washers who really want political power more than anything and who take advantage of and recruit the disaffected. Often by giving them a sense of belonging or community while also giving them an apparent sense of certainty in our ever changing world. In fact, much like religion in general has done over the millennia.

Thus by default, their actions are often allowed to be seen as the norm for their belief system. Take the example of the bombing of abortion clinics or the murder of those who work at such. Now I know plenty of moderate catholics who disagree with abortion and campaign politically against it and who don’t believe that the aforementioned actions of the fundies are in the least representative of christian teaching. But rarely do I hear them actively denouncing these actions, or when I do it is nearly always accompanied with excuses along the lines of ‘I don’t agree but with their actions I can understand their anger’ or similar statements. Similarly, with regards to muslims, I have heard many decry suicide bombings when asked to comment, but also nearly always with the proviso that they can understand what drove them to it. Usually with some excuse about societal alienation or foreign policy decisions by our governments. Therefore, if the moderate believers won’t take the fundies to task it is left to the rest of us. Unfortunately, for the moderate believers, the only real way to do that is to point out what we see as the nonsensical basis of all their belief systems not being based on evidence but only faith and so any actions by the fundies have no basis of any kind. After all, if the two faiths mentioned are really as peaceful at their core as the moderates espouse it shouldn’t be too hard for them to counter the fundies. Though when you consider the contradictions at the very core of their holy books it is perhaps understandable that anyone can twist them to any end thus the only answer we non believers can see is to point out how utterly ridiculous and irrational is the basis of their beliefs and thus, so are many of the actions carried out in their religion’s name. Of course I have used the extremes in the above post but that often only equates to the degree of immeduate damage as I consider all fundies dangerous to our world, whatever their shade.

P.S. Brian, I agree with you, for if we can’t discuss things rationally, even the irrational :) then we are no better than fundies ourselves.

  20. 60 Anna Nov 23rd, 2006 at 7:47 pm

Yeah, at least 80% (not basing this on research, just guestimating by my own opinion) of large religious groups are moderates, and the majority of them are really nice, it’s just the radicals that get heard more often cause they have the loudest voices.

An elaborate spoof on Intelligent Design, The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is neither too elaborate nor too spoofy to succeed in nailing the fallacies of ID. It's even wackier than Jonathan Swift's suggestion that the Irish eat their children as a way to keep them from being a burden, and it may offend just as many people, but Henderson, described elsewhere as a 25-year-old "out-of-work physics major," puts satire to the same serious use that Swift did. Oh, yes, it is very funny. -- Scientific American
