Richard Dawkins

Published October 4th, 2006 by Bobby Henderson

World-famous science author Professor Richard Dawkins, during an interview about his new book The God Delusion, mentions the Flying Spaghetti Monster. (Around 1:50).

It seems that he’s saying the existence of the Christian God is as likely as the existence of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, and that you can’t disprove either. Perhaps he’s not aware of the evidence we’ve gathered in support of the existence of the FSM, and all the academic endorsements, etc. Or, maybe he’s tentative about revealing his true faith, Pastafarianism.

*update* – I Just found an interesting comment:

Regarding your suspicion of Dawkins’ closet Pastafarianism. I quote from The God Delusion, p53:

“I am delighted to see that The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster has now been published as a book, to great acclaim. I haven’t read it myself, but who needs to read a gospel when you just *know* it’s true?”

I’d say that’s evidence for Dawkins’ Pastafarianism at least as strong as the Global Temperature/Pirates correlation, wouldn’t you?

*update 2* – Further evidence of Richard Dawkins’ Pastafarian beliefs: On today’s NPR Science Friday radio show, Professor Dawkins again mentions the Flying Spaghetti Monster. Link to the radio show.

Here’s another good video of Richard Dawkins.

I love the way he says “Flying Spaghetti Monster” in his delightful British accent. Definitely a closet Pastafarian – or at the very least, a Pastafarian who just doesn’t quite know he is one yet.

  2. Christian says:

Some contributors to this site have suggested that one of the serious points that the Pastafarian religion makes is that no religion can claim to have any better evidence than any other. Does this conclusion also extend to Science? That is, is it fair to say that no scientific theory can claim to have any better evidence than, say, Pastafarianism? If not, why not?

  3. Stevee says:

Don’t be stupid, your comment is not worth repliying to,
you either think you are very clever, which your not or as is more the case you are extremly stupid.

  4. Al Bacteria says:

The Pastrafarian faith is the best in the world bcoz of the following points:
    1. It appeals the mind better coz we worship a sphaggeti monster
    2. It doesnt say that those who dont follow pastafarism go to hell
    3. It is a scientific religion which stresses silently on the points
    4. This religion cannot be disproved as much as christianity or islam cannot be

    @christian
    you are a numbskull

Religion is based off of claims that cannot be proven. Science is based off of data that we know to exist. Therefore, the conclusion does not extend to Science.

    Good day :)

Ack! I want to see the rest of the second video! It sounded like he was about to talk about evolution vs. ID when the video ends with “In the bible belt…”. Anyone know where I can see the entire video?

  7. Wesley Dalefield says:

I liked the interview with Professor Richard Dawkins. He made the point near the beginning of the interview that you can’t prove that either God or the FSM do not exit. In science you can not prove a negative.

  8. Anthony says:

One Eyed Jack: the second video is from a two-part programme that Dawkins made for Channel 4, called ‘Root Of All Evil” – see http://www.channel4.com/culture/microsites/C/can_you_believe_it/debates/rootofevil.html.

Both episodes are availiable audio-only at http://paradigm.antonioedward.net/2006/05/07/get-to-check-this-out/. The video is on YouTube, but it’s broken into chunks: see http://dark-sided.blogspot.com/2006/09/root-of-all-evil-all-parts-in-order.html for links.

    regards, Anthony
