you have completely pissed us off

Please do not take any offensive “hate mail” written by Christians as an example of Christianity. We are not very good Christians; we who use words of hate. You must understand, however, that you have completely pissed us off. This site is just stupid. The concept is stupid. I can give you evidence against evolution if you so desire.

I do sort of agree that ID should not be taught in schools, but neither should evolution. It is wrong that evolution, classified as SCIENTIFIC THEORY, is taught as a fact. Teaching evolution in schools is just as offensive to us as teaching ID in schools is to you. We are all people.

The majority of Christians do not want to press our beliefs upon anybody else. The same cannot be said for scientists, it appears. Plus, while Christians want to bring wayward people to God for the wayward people’s sake, scientists want to study and elaborate on evolution because they think they can discover something wonderful and get rich off of it. So, there is still a difference between the two sides.

I think this whole fight is futile. It is written that God’s children will be hated by all, and I can see that’s the way it’s going. Everybody hates Christians…

To all the incredibly dense, uneducated Christians who continuously post on this site:

    1. I am not referring to all Christians in this post, because I realize that there are a good number of Christians that understand what a scientific theory is, and do accept evolution. However, these are not the Christians that generally post on this site.

    2. Look up the definition of scientific theory. It is not just some random idea with no evidence to back it up. It is a natural explanation of natural phenomena.

    3. ID is not a scientific theory for two reasons:
    (a) it is a supernatural explanation of natural phenomena.
    (b) it does not provide any testable hypotheses.

    4. Most of what gets taught in science classrooms are scientific theory. One obvious example is the theory of gravity. We observe that when you drop something, it falls with a constant acceleration. This is a natural phenomenon. The theory of gravity is a natural explanation of this natural phenomenon. I could argue that there are invisible faeries pushing objects to the earth, and you would not be able to prove me wrong. My “faerie theory of gravity” is not a scientific theory, however, for the same reason that ID is not a scientific theory.

    5. The whole point of FSM is as a satire of ID as an alternative to natural selection. It points out what is wrong with ID in a science classroom in an amusing way. On the surface, ID might look like science, but it is not.

ah, I see…gravity is based on “fringe mathematics” and is therefore not a valid theory….it makes perfect sense now….calculus is a flawed branch of mathematics, and tensors are obscure, therefore gravity doesn’t exist. QED

@Yet Another Christian (although, this is old, he’s probably gone now eh?)
Saying that everyone hates Christians is interesting… we tend to judge others based on our own ideas and principles, rather than on their actual actions. For example, the person who thinks everyone is spreading malicious gossip about him and talking about him all the time, is generally much more guilty of such behavior than the people he is accusing. So for you to assume that everyone hates you because of your beliefs makes me wonder how you feel about others of different faiths. I don’t hate anyone because of what they believe. I might disagree strongly, I might even hate the institution that perpetuates those beliefs, but the individuals I try to “judge” based on their personal merits. One of my very best friends is Catholic (not practising, though, I don’t think), and while I disagree strongly with almost everything the Catholic church stands for, my friend herself is a wonderfully smart and funny person.
Don’t assume that everyone hates you because of your faith… it only makes you look like a rather negative, hateful person yourself, and highlights your seemingly bigoted attitude towards others. Maybe people just hate you because of your nonexistent sense of humor, or maybe because you are a whiny self-indulgent little person?

This site is the biggest waste of “thought”, time, and effort. What is the point of have two factions of opposing views arguing their already implied opinions fruitlessly? No one on this site is going to change their mind anytime soon. Die hard christians can be ignorant, and so can die hard FSM members. just quit it.
this is about our children’s education not the bones we have to pick for whatever reason. if your family doesn’t hold evolution to be valid does it hurt to have them still know about it? same goes for intellegent design, it’s not a science class, just offer it as a unit religious studies class, as evolution is a unit in a biology class

Would you advocate the teaching of something that has its main ideas falsified, as is the case with ID. We don´t teach the earth is the flat, immoveable centre anymore either. ID is on the same level.

  19. 519 - I hate people - Aug 25th, 2007

I know arguing about this won’t do any good, because you can’t make people listen if they don’t want to. HOWEVER…

“I do sort of agree that ID should not be taught in schools, but neither should evolution. It is wrong that evolution, classified as SCIENTIFIC THEORY, is taught as a fact. Teaching evolution in schools is just as offensive to us as teaching ID in schools is to you. We are all people.”

Okay…. so first off, the whole point of science is that it’s the current best idea we have about what’s going on. It’s really quite impossible to PROVE any scientific theory correctly… you can support it with evidence, or find contradictory evidence and disprove it and go on to refine the theory to accommadate said new evidence. So… the argument that evolution should not be taught in schools based on the face that it is a THEORY completely misses the point and shows a real ignorance for the scientific method. For a nice example of changing theories, I would suggest the history of the model of the atom. I think it’s pretty commonly taught in high school science classes… you begin with the “billiard ball” model and work your way up to the current electron-shell model that we believe to be most correct today. If no theories were allows in schools, there would be no science class at all. Or economics. Or a number of other subjects.

“The majority of Christians do not want to press our beliefs upon anybody else.”

As a former atheist (having now been enlightened to the wonders of FSM), I can give personal evidence to the contrary. I think it is, perhaps, worse with atheists… somehow atheism is less tolerable than simply a different religion, but really a lot of Christians DO press their beliefs… sometimes without really realizing it.

“The same cannot be said for scientists, it appears.”

Scientific belief is based on observable evidence. Religious belief is based on faith (the Bible does not count as evidence… otherwise, I think I have pretty strong evidence for the existence of hobbits… or Hogwarts School). And as the whole point of scientific research is to increase the knowledge of our whole race, it doesn’t seem unreasonable that they should share their findings with the world. Besides, I’ve never heard of any evolutionary missions trips.

“Plus, while Christians want to bring wayward people to God for the wayward people’s sake, scientists want to study and elaborate on evolution because they think they can discover something wonderful and get rich off of it.”

I can understand that Christians may feel they are helping people… after all, they do believe that non-believers are going to have a pretty rough time after death. However, it is only in the eyes of the CHRISTIANS that these people are wayward… so you can see how it would still be mildly annoying. I mean, suppose I was a devout FSM member who happened to overlook the bit about not trying to convert people because the FSM isn’t really that vain… wouldn’t you be a little irritated if I kept trying to slap a pirate hat on you? Even if it was “in your interest”?

And as to the idea that scientists study evolution because they can get rich? That’s laughable… NO ONE who enters a pure scientific field does it for the money. Why? Because there ISN’T ANY. A scientist will likely be able to make a decent living, but he or she will definitely NOT be shopping for a personal island anytime soon. Scientists are scientists because they love their work and have a genuine desire to “discover something wonderful,” as you said.

1: The concept is almost exactly the same as your concept of God. And don’t even think about saying, “It isn’t a concept it’s the truth,” because I could say the same freaking thing about my religion.
2: Evolution is a science. ID isn’t. I hope you understand that, at least.
3: I can’t even count how many Christians have tried to convert me. You must be an idiot if you think most Christians don’t press their beliefs on others.
4: Scientists want to try to understand the Universe around us. You believe you already do understand it all. God isn’t the answer to everything, the same can be said for science.
    .
I don’t think you understand that ID is beginning to be taught in science classes. ID isn’t a science! You can’t pose it as a science, because that’s just stupid! If one could do that, teaching science wouldn’t exist in the first place! Get it into your heads!

I’ll bet you Billy Graham and the majority of televangelists are richer than the average scientist, and they offer no facts at all. If you really want to get rich and famous, come up with proof that god(s) exist. Anyone? Anyone?

yes evolution is a theory. like gravity.

by your logic nothing should be taught at school. as you are only willing to teach facts (ie things that have been proven 100%). it is impossible to prove something 100%, all we as scientist can do is aquire more and more evidence for a theory until it there is enough for it to be considered useful. even then it is not a fact. take newtons laws of motion for example, for hundreds of years these were thought to explain exactly how things moved. but then einstein came along with his theory of relitivity and completely blew it out of the water.

in conclusion, no, evolution is not a fact and perhaps it shouldn’t be taught as such but then neither is anything else, so as long as the teacher emphasises the fact that nothing should be taken as fact there is no reason not to teach evolution. it has more than enough evidence.

An elaborate spoof on Intelligent Design, The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is neither too elaborate nor too spoofy to succeed in nailing the fallacies of ID. It's even wackier than Jonathan Swift's suggestion that the Irish eat their children as a way to keep them from being a burden, and it may offend just as many people, but Henderson, described elsewhere as a 25-year-old "out-of-work physics major," puts satire to the same serious use that Swift did. Oh, yes, it is very funny. -- Scientific American
