sadly pathetic

I found this hate-comment left in response to the fsm protest in london post:

Not a religious message, but just a comment on how truly, astoundingly, sadly pathetic you are. If you’ve got a problem with creationism, then why not attack it in a vaguely sensible way, with intellectual criticism? All you’re doing is offending people, and providing money for a guy who can’t be bothered getting off his arse to get a job, so comes up with this instead. Just pathetic.

it’s not that I can’t be bothered to get a job, so much as work sucks.

Brother, can you spare a penne?

I like what Rob has done, It is simple enough a parody of religion and the belief in God. Due to its comical nature it has probably got to more people than an intelligently put letter.
    .
I don’t know if anyone here is from the UK but simply put an entire generation or three learned politics from a show called “spitting Image” this is what the FSM site is for religion.
    .
“Spitting image” is highly thought of in this country, as I believe the FSM site will be in a number of years. And if Robb makes money off it more power to him. Lets face it how many priests are making money from peddling lies?

The whole movement IS the critical argument. Its very existance is by design a criticism of the fundamental arguments used by “Intelligent Design” advocates, or, more specifically, their supporters in the Kansas School Board. It’s inherant absurdity coupled by the use of arguments identical in logical structure to that of Intelligent Design points out the problems with their arguments. It will go over the heads of those unaccustomed to logic outside of Spock’s frequent references to it in Star Trek.

I wonder if other authors and self-employed creative people are also to be counted as people who ‘can’t be bothered getting off [their] arse[s] to get a job’.
    .
(Why do I try to find sense in these posts? Why, why?)

The Holy See had an income of over $203,000,000 in 2000 (the latest estimate I can find) with a net gain of $8,500,000 after “expenses”, according to the Vatican . I am sure the televangelist Protestant Christian Right can top that with one grubby hand tied behind their backs. Religion is big business.

“And if Robb makes money off it more power to him. Lets face it how many priests are making money from peddling lies?”
    .
And I don’t think a child has ever been molested in the name of the FSM.

    .
Uh oh. Does this mean FSM is an argument for ID? I thought the FSM was evidence for unintelligent design.

I think that since FSM, by it’s nature, attracts intelligent “followers”, it will never generate a huge income. We have sold a lot of those FSM car emblems, though.

I love the FSM. I am a chemistry PhD student and I recoil at most religions, finally something I can truly believe in.

“Religion has become free enterprise … religion is therefore free to be sold, like soap flakes … preachers, standing up and saying ‘come to my church’, another one says ‘no, come to my church’, knowing of course that the more people they can get into their church, the more of those fat tithes they can get, tax free” - Richard Dawkins
    .
Coincidentally, I found that series of quotes in a Dawkins radio interview that I was chopping into soundbites for a music project that I’m working on, just this evening.
    .
    Mysterious noodly ways, guys.
    .
Speaking of which, I’m thinking of working on a couple of sea-shanty-noodly-hymns to share with the converted. Anyone want to provide some words?
    .
Davey, currently between contracts and therefore slacking off in the studio.

    @henderob:
When I bought my new Smart back in July, the FSM badge was on it before it even left the dealership. Arrrrhhh, ’tis a pirate Smartie now!

  12. 12 SaucyWench Oct 22nd, 2006 at 5:26 pm

I’m just frustrated that I don’t have the gonads, time, and creative genius to have thought of something like the FSM myself.

  13. 13 J Oct 22nd, 2006 at 5:28 pm

Davey, that’s a *fantastic* idea. We need divine shanty-hymns. (I was looking at your website today. Looks like you’ve got the gear for the job…)

  14. 14 J Oct 22nd, 2006 at 5:29 pm

(Oh, Davey - just don’t be a-looking at the BLR posts while being musically creative. Please.)

  15. 15 faghettini Oct 22nd, 2006 at 8:41 pm

Chemistry PhD student doesn’t imply smart. It implies “I study a lot of Chemistry.” It doesn’t factor into a discussion of religion any more than my venereal disease. Maybe even less.
    .
Also, $8.5 Million profit for an organization as large as the Catholic church is nothing. You can’t pretend that these people are just in it for the money.
    .
It’s not accurate to say that FSM attracts intelligent followers by its nature. Genuinely intelligent people don’t have time for the joke, so what we get is people who know nothing and want a place to mock religion, as well as people who have read up a bit on evolution or have read up on Dawkins and have a few points on which they can argue.

How bout all those companies run under a religious name, profiting from the tax ecempt status so afforded?
    .
In Australia, one off the largest cereal producers, Sanitarium, is affiliated with the Seventh Day Adventist church. As a result, this multi-million dollar organisation pays zero tax.
    .
    Sound pious, don’t they?
    .
A chemistry PhD student should not be sniffed at, either. In Australia at the least, it requires a minimum of 6-7 years to complete (disregarding an accelerated honours degree). In this time, they have to make some noticeable contribution to the field of chemistry to justify their awarding of the PhD. That is not so easy a task as might be assumed.
    .
Finally, you should maybe get yourself to a clinic, if you have a venereal disease. Those things can be nasty.

  17. 17 faghettini Oct 22nd, 2006 at 9:26 pm

I never said that nobody makes any money off religion. I said that $8.5 Million profit for an organization with some 2Billion members is nothing.
Christians, because many can be overly trusting and willing to support what they see as Christian endeavours, are easy prey for scammers masquerading as Christian organizations.
    .
Seventh Day Adventist Church ==> David Koresh ==> Massacre at Waco
They have a history of questionable behavior. I haven’t read up on them that much, but I don’t doubt what you say. I would expect that a little more research on the foundations of that particular church would be interesting.
    .
The reason the chemistry PhD student should be sniffed at is because his post had an air of entitlement to it. The topic is religion. He throws his (pending) PhD in chemistry as if it somehow gives him some cred. I don’t question his expertise in the field of chemistry. No doubt he has handled many more test tubes than me. What I am saying is that his background in chemistry in no way equips him to make sound desicions about religion, and he thinks it does.
    .
I suspect that he is American, because up here, we like to pat ourselves on the back. Everyone thinks they are something special.
    .
And I went to the clinic. They said it should clear up within two weeks.

We only offending people who come into our church and attack our belief. They are free game for all!!!
As for getting off one’s arse to get a job - that sounds like hard work.
Lastly, Make your mind up! Are we sadly pathetic or just pathetic??
    Confused.

If one takes a decent look around this site, one would notice that Intellectual Criticism plays a major part in the ID debate. Sadly, however, most ID supporters would rather not deal with such logic, so this presents us with the other option of meeting them on their own turf by combining Intellectual Criticism with a Big Invisble Monster similar to the one ID supporters employ.

You’re just jealous that our Big Invisible Monster tastes better than yours.

Purchase the Gospel

An elaborate spoof on Intelligent Design, The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is neither too elaborate nor too spoofy to succeed in nailing the fallacies of ID. It's even wackier than Jonathan Swift's suggestion that the Irish eat their children as a way to keep them from being a burden, and it may offend just as many people, but Henderson, described elsewhere as a 25-year-old "out-of-work physics major," puts satire to the same serious use that Swift did. Oh, yes, it is very funny. -- Scientific American
