It’s not accurate to say that FSM attracts intelligent followers

It’s not accurate to say that FSM attracts intelligent followers by its nature. Genuinely intelligent people don’t have time for the joke, so what we get is people who know nothing and want a place to mock religion, as well as people who have read up a bit on evolution or have read up on Dawkins and have a few points on which they can argue.

yes and christianity attracts many intelligent folk. the three wise men were classified as intelligent, and they say they were guided by a star. that is the stupidest thing i’v ever heard. and god impregnating a random woman!!!! was it his great plan, or was it a drunken night out on the town. plus jesus’ deciples all ditched him, he obviously wasnt as pleasant to be around as the great noodly one. i mean, he gives away free meatball. the roman catholics seemed like a clever lot until rome was sacked. and now the pope is a nazi!! if i was him i wouldn’t quote any more anti-muslim texts. and the priests that you hire, they should stop feeling up little boys.

First of all, those aren’t the rule. They are the exception. Thus the special section devoted to them under “Academic Endorsements.” Are we reading the same forums here? Tell me they are not full of morons.
    .
Second, what is their PhD in? Chemistry? English Lit? Their expertise is narrow. They know the subject of their thesis quite well. Nobody can legitimately question that. But in a discussion about religion, their opinion is no more enlightened, no more informed, and no more valuable than yours, piratey joe.
    .
If you had a seven year attention span, you too could have a PhD in any subject you choose. And unless your chosen subject was directly related, you would still have nothing to tell me about religion and your endorsement would be as useless then as it is now.

direct quotes from the evidence section of the FSM website:

“Thank you for enlightening the world about the true creator of the universe and everything in it. As a person with a doctorate in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry from Yale University (1974) and, thus, a better than average understanding of evolution and Darwinism, I would like to endorse, wholeheartedly, your efforts to get schools to include the REAL truth about ID and about the intelligent designer, none other than the FSM, when they teach ID in their science classes. RAMEN, “
    –Ann M. Körner Ph.D.

“As a biodiversity researcher, it has long been clear to me that there must have been something transcending mere variation, heritability, time and differential survival behind all these different sorts of animals and plants – why this ridiculous redundancy? But your revelation of a noodly appendage guiding all things has supplied the missing recipe for truly understanding this interwoven chaos of diversity. What could be plainer, once one has gazed on one of His manifestations, gilded with ground Parmesan, bathed in the blood of tomatoes, hallowed with the incense of basil and oregano, than the conclusion that only a transcendent being such as He could have conceived of the profoundly tangled connections that are revealed by researches into ecology and evolution. A personal relationship with Pasta should not be an option – it should be mandated, and be available on special Friday and Saturday nights.“ –Dr Mark Hutchinson (Adelaide, South Australia)

“As geneticist, my personal belief in the creator of everything was so far, that he resembles a pink invisible flying rabbit circling the earth just opposite the sun, and soundlessly squeaking “42″. In consequence, this creature is undetectable even by the most advanced human techniques. Furthermore, the ability of being pink and invisible at the same time provides proof for real allmightyness. However, Pastafarianism seems to be much more substantiated, and is not violating Occam’s razor (see comment of S. Bilson-Thompson), and follows pure philosophical logic, as colleague Brian D. Rabern has pointed out previously. Therefore, I am sure that the members of the Kansas Board of Education, who gave logic a particular importance, will honor these undisputable facts by including FSM in their curriculum, thereby setting highest educational standards also for non-US countries. – Additionally, the invisible pink rabbit hypothesis might be discussed if there could be some time spared in the pupil’s schedule. RAmen “ –Jobst Meyer, PhD, Professor of Behavioral Genetics

“The first bottle of Lambrusco I chugged in High School some 30 years ago washed my full immersion baptism into the Baptist faith away. The second bottle I chugged that night resulted in a pasta “vision” that, sadly, I was too blind and covered in noodles to understand. Now, after a long career as a Biologist and educator, I see the light. If you form a curriculum committee, keep me in mind.”

I sincerely disgree with you. In order to obtain a doctorate, it doesn’t take a dedication to time, it takes the potential mental capacity to do so. Something that not everyone is capable. It only takes time to reach that mental capacity. And as you might know, because you seem to be pretty defensive and cocky, that part of the process to obtain your Ph.D is a research/analysis section. Meaning that these people have to be able to think both logically and extremely abstractly. That to me constitutes intelligent in every sense of the word. Moreover, mainstream religion is so fatally flawed that it only does take a few simple SCIENTIFIC facts to disprove the bible and what it stands for (ex. the age of the planet. It is obviously older than 5 or 6 thousand years). Even if FSM does atract a few people who are a bit retarded (slowed down) it also attracts many more of us who are intelligent (I’m not saying I’m a genious but I am intelligent). AND so what religion wouldn’t even compare.

I’m sorry if you disagree with me, but i don’t feel like wasting any more time arguing with you and will not reply.

As you said yourself, intelligence can be achieved. Not everyone is capable, but most are. Many intelligent people choose not to, because they have weighed their other options and see no reason for it.
I never argued that people with PhDs aren’t intelligent. That is a misinterpretation of what was said. That argument cannot be pursued very far. What I did was question the value of a PhD endorsement of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.
The Flying Spaghetti Monster, by it’s nature, does not attract intelligent people. The opposition to teaching Intelligent Design in science class certainly does.

I just think that this site is a good way for all of us to take ourselves and a our beliefs and just laugh at ourselves, no matter what we believe in.

I think the big problem with the world today, from my perspective, is that we all just need to be a bit more tolerant of each other. I know that is not a the most popular-practised idea. But I find that at the basis of most of these religions is tolerance and understanding of your fellow brother or sister.

I think that FSM is great and really puts a smile on my face.

Sir, you are confusing the word “intelligent” for “busy”.

Intelligent people have all the time they want to devote to anything they fancy. Busy people, it can be argued, have little time for anything but what they consider important. And even they there may be some busy people finding the chrurch of FSM an important topic of research.

Basicly, lets take what -f has to say litteraly:
Intelligent people have no sense of humour. If we were to take this seriously, we’d find that he cannot be intelligent (as he browses this site, and therefore has some sort of sense of humour). And therefore either way, if he’s right or wrong he musn’t be taken seriously. Foolproof logic :)

I’m sorry, but if you “don’t have time for the joke”, you don’t have time to live life, for what it was ment for.

Frick, even Dawkins has a good sense of humour, he was on colbert for god sakes. I wouldn’t be surprised if he visits this site regularly.

    Hello -f,
    .
First of all, let me start by saying that I’m not going to *personally* insult you.
    .
I’m educated to GCE level. Here in the UK (I don’t know where you’re based, so I’ll explain the whole thing, for the benefit of other posters if nothing else), that’s the exams you take at the age of 16. You can leave school after that, which I did. No college, no University. I’m seriously uneducated.
    .
    However…
    .
I run a successful business (my third), designing and developing software. I play music, I climb, I involve myself in local politics. I debate *anything* with my friends. I read *lots* (not just trash thrillers and detective novels, either – although they’re fun in their own way). I correspond with lots of people via email.
    .
Most people that know me don’t believe that I never went to University, but I didn’t. Some of the most intelligent people I personally know didn’t – they got on with becoming millionaires instead.
    .
I spend time posting to this board because I have time on my hands right now – I’m on a break, between contracts. I don’t find that I’m getting any dumber by having a rest!
    .
I guess the points I’m trying to make here are:
    .
    a) Education is no indication of intelligence – you can be dead smart without one.
    .
    b) Having time on your hands is no indication of intelligence – in fact, I’d say the smartest people can probably afford more leisure time.
    .
    c) None of the above negates the common experience here that most (but by no means all) the commentators that come here to knock FSM *miss its point* – and what inference are we to draw from that? They’re somehow *too smart* to get the joke?
    .
    d) Finally, if someone’s in too big a hurry to read what FSM is about, properly, before posting a negative comment about it, then no, that doesn’t neccessarily make the unintelligent. But it does make them a jerk.

Now let us all huddle together and re-affirm our faith in Him before engaging in a time consuming and mind numbing counting of the pasta. I shall bury my head in the pasta and I shall receive the comfort of knowing that there is a monster; and he is made of spaghetti. And he took up the sauce. And low his meatballs were placed to the right and to the left. And the strands of spaghetti, though initially tepid were elevated to a state of warmth.

Something I always quoted when people said “you must be smart to be going to uni”
I also informed them that what was most demanded in studying for a degree was interest, time and effort. But if you really wanted to, yu could get past with time and effort.

“Some of the most intelligent people I personally know didn’t – they got on with becoming millionaires instead.”
    .
I agree. The flip side is, while they aren’t the majority, I’ve really had to wonder how some students got into uni in the first place, let alone walked out with a degree.

The entire point of these intellectuals endorsing the Flying Spaghetti Monster is not to prove that he exists, but that if an omnipotent being exists, it is just as accurate to call it “god” as it is to call it “Flying Spaghetti Monster”. And as to the whole anti-humor campaign, you can either live life taking it seriously and focusing on the negatives, or its possible to try to help people via science and still get a good laugh out of it before you die. Personally, I know which I choose.

there are several levels of intelligence, only one of them academia. There is also street smarts and applicable intelligence. I know of many people who are intelligent and have PHD’s but lack the ability to draw a corelation between a no parking sign and a parking ticket. Trust me, i’ve written enough tickets to have published a book on the topic. (working on it)
furthermore, I have met many people who have not gone to university and have led successful lives in the business sector. It’s all relative to the work that they do. the same is true for FSM. For my own curiousity, do you have a degree? Are you educated? I am sure the rest of us ‘unintelligent’ posters would love to know where….what’s the phrase/ oh yes we would like to know where you get off telling us we must be unintelligent.

“Genuinely intelligent people don’t have time for the joke,”

Thank you. I hate how people always think genuinely intelligent people like us have the time to process anything other than completely bare statements of fact. As if I could possibly dedicate my precious brain cycles to the terribly obfuscated idea behind the FSM. It would just take so much mind juice to even begin to think about it.

Just the other day, the following exchange took place between me and a good friend of mine:
    Him: “Knock Knock!”
Me: “SHUT UP CAN’T YOU SEE I’M BEING GENUINELY INTELLIGENT”

    Hey F-!
You said the expertise of PhDs is narrow. They know about the field they have worked on, so why should they know more about religion than anybody else? This is your point, right?
So here is an answer. Getting a PhD is more than remembering random shit. Having a PhD means making a scientific carrier, specifying and in fact narrowing the field of work. When you do this, you get fucking aware of the fact that you cannot study the whole world, and you will stay ignorant in many respects. But why should this keep one from studiying, from trying to understand the world? The question is how to treat ignorance.

And this is the point where science and religion differ. Science accepts ignorance, religion does not. A scientist knows that he doesn’t know shit – but he also knows that he could investigate things and would, with patience, find out. For religious people, there is nothing you they don’t know (or, from the scientist’s view, they do not accept their ignorance and are too fucking lazy to switch on their brains). In religion, everything you don’t know – is GOD! (sorry, I of course would say the Spaghetti monster). By the way, in logic, you call this “argumentum ad ignorantiam”.

Believe what you want, but if you can switch on your brains and think about it… realize that religion and science are perspectives – and fucking are different.

    Greetz, mopert!

Also, I’ve got to say that unintelligent people would go “lol, spagetti” and forget about the FSM. Intelligent ones would get the purpose and continue to be amused and support this new God.

Hence Dawkins books are highly recommended since they are targeted at the layman too, the language not too technical and bla…

    > what we get is people who know nothing and want
    > a place to mock religion

    -f,

I believe you are confusing divine inspiration with mocking. To be sure, there are some parallels between Pastafarianism and Christianity, but just the parts that by chance, or by His noodly inspiration, Christians got right, such as the creation of the world by a single “Creator” (in 7 days for Christians, in 0.062831853 seconds, approximately, for Pastafarians). This is not a mocking of Christianity – Christians deserve credit for getting a few things right – and Pastafarians are not afraid to give credit where credit is due.

We Pastafarians simply want a level playing field – let all religions/theories be free – let them all be taught. If you truly believed in religious freedom you would be a supporter of Pastafarianism.

As for Dawkins, well again Christians and Pastafarians, can find some common ground. Dawkins has famously said that “religion is the root of all evil”. I don’t know about the Christian god, but how can “noodly goodness” be “evil” – by definition that is not possible, so Dawkins is wrong.

I would urge you -f, and you Mr Dawkins, to open your hearts to the Flying Spaghetti Monster and let him into your life.

Go in garlicy peace my friends.

I have a literally perfect academic record, including qualifications in maths, physics, chemistry, biology, geology and astronomy. Presently, I’m reading for a degree in Earth Sciences at St. Edmund Hall in the University of Oxford, which I fully expect to follow up with a doctorate. I have been collecting geological specimens and scientific textbooks for most of my life.

Everything that I have seen and read in every field of science has confirmed the existence of His Noodliness. For example, the problem of wave-particle duality is completely solved by considering light and so on to be streams of wavy spaghetti.

The IDers are so rooted in their faith that any evidence can be beaten by a simple “God did it.” That is where FSMism comes in; simple mockery and humor can expose the ridiculousness of some of the creationist ideas. If you are simply suggesting that most people on our forums are stupid, then you have wasted your time. The fact is that most people in this world are stupid. They know nothing but what they were taught in church or read in a book based on nothing that can be proven. Evolution is based on scientific fact, research it. It makes sense, ID does not. It’s not so difficult to see how Natural Selection works my friend. Science can be proven, Religion can not be proven.

I may just, technically, be an irish kid of the age of 15, but if god is perfect,, why would he feel the need to create anything, much less an imperfect world? If to be perfect is to be complete in every sense, then why would he feel the desire to create, and why would he feel the need to tempt his people. To me this suggests either sadism , or really having nothing better to fdo with his time. If anyone wants to hear of anymore arguments against God(s) i’ve got a few more cooking here. And by the way, in case you haven’t noticed,im not tryinfg to offend your beliefs, these are merely my own. Thank you. And (i know i shouldn’t start a sentence with it, but who cares?) who gave you the right to assume that people of an intelligent nature wouldn’t have time for a joke? That is highly offensive and blatantly incorrect

I attended a magnet school in Austin, TX, which while being smack dab in the middle of hickdom, is one of the more prestigious public high schools (that’s kind of an oxymoron I know). I’m doing more extra-curricular activities than average (scio, cretamen, knowledge masters, Latin club and im filming a mildly satirical movie (most people will just laugh)) but I have a very good Christian friend who argues with me over evolution and ID constantly, but I don’t hate him, I believe that there is too much broad hostility being conveyed by us(aren’t we suppose to be the smart ones?) to all Christians. We as a faith are losing our original purpose, to get rid of ID from schools and keep it out. From the various hate mails we have gotten we have begun to lose sight of our purpose, we are turning from activists to a Christian hating cult, come on guys lets not be another scientologist cult
    .

lets only attack the people who attack us, and I can share a joke when intellegant people lose sight of what makes us human we become the hitlers and stalins of the world.

Everybody comes here and touts their credentials. You are throwing everything you have out there to give yourself more credibility. Your inflated sense of entitlement and self-worth is hilarious. I hope that this is not the attitude that you have towards everything in your life. It is interesting that even after getting a 4.0 GPA in your double major (in what and what?), you are not uniquely useful enough to anyone for them to hire you on full time. Everyone loves themselves first and loves their kids second. Everybody thinks they know better. You are average, and your two kids are average. There is nothing wrong with being average. 50% of people just as dumb or dumber than you are, 50% are just as smart or smarter. Its the lower half that you teach reading skills to. Volunteering at a zoo is not an indication of your intelligence.
    .
    >”I always have time for intelligent satire and critical thinking.”
FSM is not critical thinking. Its a joke. Its not intelligent satire. Its slapstick.

I agree. It attracts people that have exactly the same intelligence as every other religion. People who have exactly the same knowledge base and are as informed as members of every other religion.

On a lighter note, I have taken up pastafarianism in the hope that through communing with the great FSM he will let me not be touched by his noodly appendage as I jump from airplanes. Thus when I am skydiving I can one day do so without a parachute, once HE feels that I have sufficient faith. I plan to spread the word of FSM to all of the other skydivers at the local dropzone so that they can help me to convince HIM to help us with his noodly appendage during our “intelligent falling” episodes.

well, pastafarians basically can all read, write (type at least) and use computers. They also have an understanding of satire. Where as there are many, many people from other religions which cannot do (any/all of) the above, so i would guess the average intellegence is, infact, higher.

I actually conducted a poll regarding belief in a God on the MENSA forums (gotta be a member to see)

Around 56% claim a disbelief in gods

And deducing from other posts the majority of the remaining 44% believe in god in a very nebulous non religiously defined way… So there is most certainly a correlation between IQ and religiosity.

O! I see now, I have been so stupid all my life, damn. I can’t be a cleaver person because I have sense of humour. I mean sense of humour (time for a joke) is clearly a limiting factor of intelligence. Its just silly to suggest that any one who has ever spent a second of there life finding something amusing could be inelegant. They should just spend there time being inelegant, not doing anything light hearted. Naturally I can not form any of my own opinions, I have merely read up on Dawkins and Darwin (who clearly spends his time preaching that FSM is god) and have never formulated my own opinions on religion. No! I haven’t!

I don’t think it’s fair to say that ALL pastasfarians are intelligent, because there are always some slow-coaches in the mix somewhere, people don’t become pastafarians quite for that reason.

People become pastafarians because the intent of every aspect of pastafarianism aims at being positive. It encourages tolerance, goodwill, dressing up like a pirate to please his noodliness (and because it is so damn fun!), preaches of a delightful sounding heaven and encourages that the deity is one that just wants to be happy with his people.

You don’t need to be intelligent to be pastafarian, but I assure you that you don’t have to be stupid either. That’s not the point.

An elaborate spoof on Intelligent Design, The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is neither too elaborate nor too spoofy to succeed in nailing the fallacies of ID. It's even wackier than Jonathan Swift's suggestion that the Irish eat their children as a way to keep them from being a burden, and it may offend just as many people, but Henderson, described elsewhere as a 25-year-old "out-of-work physics major," puts satire to the same serious use that Swift did. Oh, yes, it is very funny. -- Scientific American
