It’s not accurate to say that FSM attracts intelligent followers by its nature. Genuinely intelligent people don’t have time for the joke, so what we get is people who know nothing and want a place to mock religion, as well as people who have read up a bit on evolution or have read up on Dawkins and have a few points on which they can argue.
-f

Basicly, lets take what -f has to say litteraly:
Intelligent people have no sense of humour. If we were to take this seriously, we’d find that he cannot be intelligent (as he browses this site, and therefore has some sort of sense of humour). And therefore either way, if he’s right or wrong he musn’t be taken seriously. Foolproof logic :)
I’m sorry, but if you “don’t have time for the joke”, you don’t have time to live life, for what it was ment for.
Frick, even Dawkins has a good sense of humour, he was on colbert for god sakes. I wouldn’t be surprised if he visits this site regularly.
Hello -f,
.
First of all, let me start by saying that I’m not going to *personally* insult you.
.
I’m educated to GCE level. Here in the UK (I don’t know where you’re based, so I’ll explain the whole thing, for the benefit of other posters if nothing else), that’s the exams you take at the age of 16. You can leave school after that, which I did. No college, no University. I’m seriously uneducated.
.
However…
.
I run a successful business (my third), designing and developing software. I play music, I climb, I involve myself in local politics. I debate *anything* with my friends. I read *lots* (not just trash thrillers and detective novels, either - although they’re fun in their own way). I correspond with lots of people via email.
.
Most people that know me don’t believe that I never went to University, but I didn’t. Some of the most intelligent people I personally know didn’t - they got on with becoming millionaires instead.
.
I spend time posting to this board because I have time on my hands right now - I’m on a break, between contracts. I don’t find that I’m getting any dumber by having a rest!
.
I guess the points I’m trying to make here are:
.
a) Education is no indication of intelligence - you can be dead smart without one.
.
b) Having time on your hands is no indication of intelligence - in fact, I’d say the smartest people can probably afford more leisure time.
.
c) None of the above negates the common experience here that most (but by no means all) the commentators that come here to knock FSM *miss its point* - and what inference are we to draw from that? They’re somehow *too smart* to get the joke?
.
d) Finally, if someone’s in too big a hurry to read what FSM is about, properly, before posting a negative comment about it, then no, that doesn’t neccessarily make the unintelligent. But it does make them a jerk.
“Genuinely intelligent people don’t have time for the jokeâ€
This is a joke, right? I laughed when I read it. So I conclude that -f has time for a joke. So from this argument I can draw the logical conclusion that -f is not genuine, or not intelligent, or neigther.
Now let us all huddle together and re-affirm our faith in Him before engaging in a time consuming and mind numbing counting of the pasta. I shall bury my head in the pasta and I shall receive the comfort of knowing that there is a monster; and he is made of spaghetti. And he took up the sauce. And low his meatballs were placed to the right and to the left. And the strands of spaghetti, though initially tepid were elevated to a state of warmth.
Rejoice ye all. RAmen.

“Education is no indication of intelligence - you can be dead smart without one.”

Something I always quoted when people said “you must be smart to be going to uni”
I also informed them that what was most demanded in studying for a degree was interest, time and effort. But if you really wanted to, yu could get past with time and effort.
“Some of the most intelligent people I personally know didn’t - they got on with becoming millionaires instead.”
.
I agree. The flip side is, while they aren’t the majority, I’ve really had to wonder how some students got into uni in the first place, let alone walked out with a degree.

Thank you for pointing us in the right direction, Don Lardini.
Pass the sauce and reaffirm the holy experience of being touched by his noodly appendages.
More beer.
I’m drawn once more to consider a Larson comic, posted by someone oh so central to this argument.
Not really dead on topic here, but we’re talking about intelligence, so I thought I would paste this link from one of my other favorite sites, Phil Plait’s “Bad Astronomy”. It appears science is once again on notice from the Catholic Church:

I truly love Phil’s last two paragraphs. It’s amazing how often religous pundits fail to notice the irony in their own statements.

Some of the wittiest, most genuinely funny people I know have PhDs in Math, Physics and Computer Science (generally considered signs of intelligence). The reverse also seems to hold true, as all those people with PhDs that I know are almost universally possessed of sharp wit and good sense of humor.
Personally, I think you have to be at least reasonably intelligent to appreciate the humor of FSM. Ramen, intelligent brothers.
The entire point of these intellectuals endorsing the Flying Spaghetti Monster is not to prove that he exists, but that if an omnipotent being exists, it is just as accurate to call it “god†as it is to call it “Flying Spaghetti Monsterâ€. And as to the whole anti-humor campaign, you can either live life taking it seriously and focusing on the negatives, or its possible to try to help people via science and still get a good laugh out of it before you die. Personally, I know which I choose.
First, thanks for the link, One-Eyed-Jack!
Second, I’m not bragging or nothing, but I’m kinda smart. And I do get FSM. Maybe my intelligence isn’t genuine, though. Could I be a knock-off intellectual? That would suck.
@ -f
For someone who obviously considers themselves to be of far greater intelligence than the rest of us, I notice that you seem to be spending an awful lot of time on here - in fact far more time than I do. Please tell us, who are you trying to convince with your “intelligence” - us…or yourself? We understand if you don’t the joke - and apprantly you don’t. Or at least if you do get the joke, you have to learn how to take one. So please, join us in thriving from His Noodley Appendage, if you choose not to, it’s your choice, but why waste your “intelligence” on something you seem to find so dumb and mundane?
To those who were talking about intelligence and degrees a gew posts back i agree that not all smart people go to uni and apparently the pass mark for a degree in medecine is 50% - just a little something to prove the point about some people who go to uni not being tht bright. I say apparently because i got tht info randomly from the teacher during a stats lesson he said he was at uni with some people who did medecine. Can any 1 confirm if 50% is the pass mark and then post, please?

there are several levels of intelligence, only one of them academia. There is also street smarts and applicable intelligence. I know of many people who are intelligent and have PHD’s but lack the ability to draw a corelation between a no parking sign and a parking ticket. Trust me, i’ve written enough tickets to have published a book on the topic. (working on it)
furthermore, I have met many people who have not gone to university and have led successful lives in the business sector. It’s all relative to the work that they do. the same is true for FSM. For my own curiousity, do you have a degree? Are you educated? I am sure the rest of us ‘unintelligent’ posters would love to know where….what’s the phrase/ oh yes we would like to know where you get off telling us we must be unintelligent.
Read the gospel buddy. Especailly the ‘I’d rather you didn’t’ Section.

I consider myself a generally intelegent person. I come here in my spare time.
-f – “Are we reading the same forums here? Tell me they are not full of morons.â€â€”Actually, I’ve come across quite a few scientists, doctors, so on so forth…and me, of course, I’m no moron. *cough*
“But in a discussion about religion, their opinion is no more enlightened, no more informed, and no more valuable than yours,â€â€”so does that mean no one is ever allowed to have an opinion on religion but those who majored in studying it? Anyone who can get a PhD in ANYTHING is intelligent enough to consider carefully the many quirks of religion and form an intellectual opinion. I’d certainly trust them over the white trash down the street. (Assuming there is, in fact, white trash down the street near you.)
You’ve been annoying me for some time. For one thing, getting a diploma in any field implies that you had the mental potential and stamina needed to attain that goal. Going to college for 4 years or more, you generally pick up other knowledge in addition to the stuff you paid for. I would assume that most (if not all) of the people who regularly post here are fairly intelligent, not only from the content of the posts, but by the comonly known fact that most smart people love funny stuff.
-f,
.
Please tell me what qualifications you have? Come come, let us know what educational heights you have acheived, up to PHD? If not FUCK OFF!
“Genuinely intelligent people don’t have time for the joke, so what we get is people who know nothing and want a place to mock religion, as well as people who have read up a bit on evolution or have read up on Dawkins and have a few points on which they can argue.
And here I thought that being genuinely intelligent was what permitted me to have the time to read websites like this, in as much as it requires a bit of ingenuity, critical and executive thinking, and technical proficiency (my work has been called the product of genius, but I am far too humble to mention it) to cram as much as I do into my day and still have a decent amount of goof-off time.
Thank you for enlightening me. I now know that I am only superficially intelligent, as opposed to genuinely so.
“Are we reading the same forums here? Tell me they are not full of morons.”
Typically we refer to them by their religious affiliation. “Morons” is really harsh. For shame.
