Talk like a pirate day

September 19th is International Talk Like a Pirate Day.

This is important for a number of reasons, but for Pastafarians it provides a convenient source of pirate-behavior data to substantiate the Pirates Vs. Temperature correlation which serves as a keystone of our religion. We expect to see a considerable drop in temperature worldwide on Tuesday the 19th, due to the widespread pirate activity taking place.

I will be collecting quantitative temperature data via the interwebs, but if you have anecdotal (or specious) evidence of unseasonably cold weather, please describe it for us as a comment to this post.

Also, if you’ve done anything amazingly piratey today, please leave a comment about it. We all need to do our part to reverse Global Warming.

You can expect a thorough report of my findings on Wednesday or Thursday.

As a Flying Spaghetti Monsterist, I felt it was my duty to spread the piratey message, especially on this most sacred of days. We’ve formed a small raiding party in school to re-enact the traditions of our forefathers. Also, pillaging is fun.

Note: Yaarage has reached unprecedented proportions, as have pirate songs.

    Yaar!

I’ll post a roster of people who I’ve introduced the Pirate-Global Warming theory too. My friend Dom (Pirate Lazybones)has come up with a particularly logical solution:

If we bring back pirates, they’ll need pirate ships. As pirate ships make less pollution than other modern forms of travel, as more people become pirates there will be less pollution, and the rate of increase of global warming will decrease! It’s pirate-tastic!

    Yours in pasta,
    Cap’n Gorilocks and Pirate Lazybones.

I be Harry, from Australia matey. We be having cold weather today, unlike yesterday which be 30 degrees celsius, today be only 21 degrees celcius and rain. Thank ye pirates for the cold weather me says. We and me maties went to school in pirate clothes today to show the true piratey spirit. It be a pity that we be going to a Christian school, and we be getting detentions for it.

This be me favourite day of the year it be! People that no not of FSMism celebrate our religion with us whilst noing it not, they do! I shall spend the day at work answering the phone with a good “AVAST YE MATEY! DECLARE YERSELF OR I’LL RUN YA THROU WITH ME PAPERMATEY! TIM THE CABIN BOY BE A SPEAKIN! HOW CAN I PILAGE YE?!”

I wanna know how long I can go before someone actually responds in a piarate voice!

Yarrghh! Oi be from Australia too & Oi can vouch for the fellow Aussie poirate above that today were definitely a few degrees colder than recent days. Arrrgghh! Oi feels me timbers shivering as Oi be speakin’ these words.

  13. 13 marc Sep 19th, 2006 at 4:44 am

    BTW:
    1. Fifteen men on a dead man’s chest
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum
Drink and the devil had done for the rest
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.
The mate was fixed by the bosun’s pike
The bosun brained with a marlinspike
And cookey’s throat was marked belike
    It had been gripped by fingers ten;
And there they lay, all good dead men
Like break o’day in a boozing ken
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.

    2. Fifteen men of the whole ship’s list
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!
Dead and be damned and the rest gone whist!
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!
The skipper lay with his nob in gore
Where the scullion’s axe his cheek had shore
And the scullion he was stabbed times four
And there they lay, and the soggy skies
    Dripped down in up-staring eyes
In murk sunset and foul sunrise
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.

    3. Fifteen men of ‘em stiff and stark
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!
Ten of the crew had the murder mark!
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!
Twas a cutlass swipe or an ounce of lead
Or a yawing hole in a battered head
And the scuppers’ glut with a rotting red
And there they lay, aye, damn my eyes
    Looking up at paradise
    All souls bound just contrawise
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.

    4. Fifteen men of ‘em good and true
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!
Ev’ry man jack could ha’ sailed with Old Pew,
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!
There was chest on chest of Spanish gold
With a ton of plate in the middle hold
And the cabins riot of stuff untold,
And they lay there that took the plum
With sightless glare and their lips struck dumb
While we shared all by the rule of thumb,
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!

    5. More was seen through a sternlight screen
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum
Chartings undoubt where a woman had been
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.
‘Twas a flimsy shift on a bunker cot
With a dirk slit sheer through the bosom spot
And the lace stiff dry in a purplish blot
Oh was she wench or some shudderin’ maid
That dared the knife and took the blade
By God! she had stuff for a plucky jade
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.

    6. Fifteen men on a dead man’s chest
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum
Drink and the devil had done for the rest
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.
We wrapped ‘em all in a mains’l tight
With twice ten turns of a hawser’s bight
And we heaved ‘em over and out of sight,
    With a Yo-Heave-Ho! and a fare-you-well
And a sudden plunge in the sullen swell
Ten fathoms deep on the road to hell,
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!

Living in Texas the average temperature is about 87 degrees (F). While waking up this morning dressing in my usual pirate atire and deciding which eye I should wear my eye patch on, I noticed an unusal drop in temprature outside. Cheaking my gage to note if any piarte movement is about, to my delight It read 66. Thank you to all Pastafarians who care about the Pirate civilization, and global warming.

    Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England.

Yesterday it was hot and humid, today it is much colder. Co-incidence - I don’t think so.

  21. 21 Niniane Sep 19th, 2006 at 6:16 am

Unseasonable Cold front coming through in Sunny Fla., what more proof could one ask for? Thanks, your noodliness!

  22. 22 Khyron the Backstabber Sep 19th, 2006 at 6:39 am

ARRR! Here in the fine pirate port of Washington, DC., we be fillin’ our newly installed air conditioners with fine cool spirits today - and turnin’ them on for the first time! Our new data center will be colder than Davy Jones’ locker by sunset! All praise to his noodliness fer arranging to deliver the booty today, months in advance! True evidence of his power an’ omnicience!

  23. 23 Joel (AKA Calico John Kidd) Sep 19th, 2006 at 6:51 am

GAAAAAARRR me hearties!!! It be an unseasonably chilly 18 degrees here in Plymouth today, where before the mercury was boiling in the very thermometers! Yaargh! I have woken all my landlubbing shipmates this morning with a rousing chorus of shouting, pillaging and sword waving in the hope that the world will be a better (and cooler) place for it!

Avast me hearties!! May the winds blow ye where the treasure be

  24. 24 CUd Sep 19th, 2006 at 6:53 am

  25. 25 Emi Sep 19th, 2006 at 7:02 am

Aye! Florida’s a might chilly t’is mornin’, but alas, the day is young and I’m rather sure the pirattitude shall be stronger in the evenin’ when we’re full of grog and noodles. RAmen!

It is freezing cold in the Pirate Bastion of Kansas City, MO today. The low this morning was 45 F, and the high is expected to be 67 F. THE AVERAGES FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR ARE TEN DEGREES HIGHER!

Bobby Henderson and the Flying Spaghetti Monster are saving the planet by spreading the Evangelical Pirate Message! Thanks, Bobby!

  28. 28 Cap'nUberbob Sep 19th, 2006 at 7:19 am

‘Tis freezing the brass balls cold in the Pirate Bastion of Kansas City, MO today, arrr. The low this morning was a frigid 45 F, and the high is expected to be 67 F. THE AVERAGES FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR ARE TEN DEGREES HIGHER!

Yea, verily, Bobby Henderson and the Flying Spaghetti Monster are saving the planet by spreading the Evangelical Pirate Message!

  29. 29 Concerned Non-Believer Sep 19th, 2006 at 7:22 am

It is my duty to inform all of you participating in this piratey nonsense of the facts. Today in Arkansas where I live, it was 57 degrees F. A few days ago, it was in the upper 80’s. If you pirates don’t stop carrying on and pillaging and plundering, you might just start another Ice Age. You pirates won’t have anywhere to sail if the oceans freeze up. I implore you, stop the pirattitude before it gets too cold.

YARRR! Me timbers be shiv’rin! When the great sun be showin’ just week last, the heat were reachin’ 100 or more, here in Dallas. Today, with the onset of mighty piratage, the breeze be bringing the sweet, sweet 60s and 70s to me dry pate! Avast, keep buckling the swash, mateys! I wonder how many customers will understand the importance of me piratey talk when they call for troubleshooting on their enchanted talk-boxes (powered by His Noodliness Himself). Hold your tongue, bo’s’n! I’m not proselytizing, only preaching the truth!

  33. 33 Dirty Bess Kidd Sep 19th, 2006 at 8:54 am

Tis a fine day indeed! Today I be dressed in the spirit of the day and confusing all me coworkers with my scurvy pirate talk! The breeze blowing and the temperature be droppin. Ayy it be fine weather for setting sails today.

  35. 35 Matt Sep 19th, 2006 at 9:14 am

Aye, as a new pastafarian it was me great joy to find that the 19th of September is talk like a pirate day, because it is also me birthday, y’arr. At me party tonite I will be making pirates of all me friends and make the world cooler even fer the yellow bellied land lubbers.

  36. 36 Daniel Humphreys (a.k.a. Cap'n Gorilocks) Sep 19th, 2006 at 9:17 am

Total no. of people converted today: 5, with the message spread to many others. I can’t vouch for a major temperature drop on account of being too busy pirating to notice, but there was a mighty chilly breeze around.

  38. 38 Another Steve Sep 19th, 2006 at 9:33 am

Arr! Here in Calgary (Canada) ’tis foggy and grey, only a degree or so above freezing. The condensation fogged up the mirror on my pirate helmet as I rowed my bicycle to work with the oar-locks muffled and the scuppers flizzin’ afore the giblets. Now methinks I oughtn’t ‘a worn my pink shirt this morning. Arrr!

  39. 39 Cap'n Dastardly Dan Sep 19th, 2006 at 9:45 am

  43. 43 The Dread Pirate Chris Sep 19th, 2006 at 10:01 am

Here in Oklahoma, it do be much colder than it should. May I rot in Davy Jones’ locker if it do not. Praise be to Our Noodly Master, for he did see fit to take mercy on us.

(Apparently pirates are actually Illianers. Curious.)

Avast yer scurvy scupper dogs! The tide and the temper’ture have dropped on Talk Like a Pirate Day here in Baltimore, home of the privateers. Aye, I measured the temper’ture against the skin of me backhand, an’ it was noticeably colder than the FSM, which is proof that pirattitude can stop global warming. Aaarrr!

  46. 46 Alan Sep 19th, 2006 at 10:30 am

Arrrr… I ain’t be seein a single pirate here in the port o’ Bristol, and it be as warm as ever. Proof, surely, of the causative link between pirates and temperature?

  47. 47 Julie Sep 19th, 2006 at 10:39 am

Quite surely, matey. Yargh, the temperature of Akron be a chillin wind carried from her icey sea, it be the pirate dream! I be late for me classes, and the good teacher wench be castin us as landlubbers and makin us swap the deck for our tardies!

  48. 48 humanity Sep 19th, 2006 at 10:40 am

    YYYAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGGG to all!!

I almost froze me chumbucket this mornin’ scrapin the ice off me land-pirate ship. Not to worry, though, as I will be a’hosting a pasta feast tonight with enough grog and rum to warm even the coldest heart. I be thinkin’ that the cabin boys will be extra busy swabbin’ the deck and cleanin’ the scuppers in many pirate hangouts.
    Enjoy this fine day, mates!

  49. 49 Puffy Sep 19th, 2006 at 10:52 am

Avast ye me hearties, this be puffy from Rhodes University in South Africa, us loyal pastafarians of the Rhodes University Church of The Flying Spaghetti Monster have been out and about all day around campus handing out flyers and winning converts (obviously dressed in full pirate regalia so as to please His Noodliness) I hope His Noodliness will see fit to touch us much with His Noodly Appendage. And further proof (as if it were needed) was shown to us today with the temperature being incredibly cold for a day in spring, obviously due to all the pirates around the world today. We shall be partaking of the Holy Dish tonight, which is of course Spaghetti and Meatballs.

May you all be touched by His Noodly Appendage.

YARRR, it be a cold day in hell, mateys! By “Hell” I mean the lubberous land of Phoenix Arizona, where temperatures are takin’ a turn for the unseasonably cool and ye old national weather service is predicting an “early autumn and winter” for us.

    Yarrr harrr!

  51. 51 Paul R. Welke Sep 19th, 2006 at 11:23 am

    Ahoy Mateys!
I am a telecomm technician who, for reasons that don’t need exploring at this juncture, has a homemade sock monkey who rides shotgun with me. His name is Corky, and as we’re driving around, we’re both wearing bandanas. I’ve also changed my company voicemail to begin with a “YARRRRR!” and wish everyone a happy Int’l Talk Like a Pirate Day. I could very possibly get fired for this, but if anyone tries to screw me, I’m gonna sue for religious discrimination.

    Yaaaaaarrrrrrrggggggghhhh!!!

  55. 55 Cap'n Rickster Sep 19th, 2006 at 11:50 am

Arrr! I be bringin’ some anecdotal evidence for the relation between pirates an’ global temperature. This mornin’ dawned warm an’ humid here in Virginia, but since me mateys ‘n’ me we’ve been talkin’ like pirates this afternoon, methinks I detect a bit o’ chill in the air at the office. So like many Christians o’ my acquaintance, I cannot offer a shred o’ proof, but I don’t be needin’ any - I’ve had me own personal experience o’ pirate-induced coolin’. Avast, me hearties! An’ cursed be the scurvy knave who says any diferent!

  56. 56 Humanistic Jones Sep 19th, 2006 at 11:55 am

  59. 59 Chobi Sep 19th, 2006 at 12:04 pm

  61. 61 Geri Sep 19th, 2006 at 12:23 pm

Avast, me hearties! We are all talkin’ like pirates today at the library where I work. Doin’ our part to lower the global temperature and give honor to his Noodly Self.

Yar! I spread news of the holiday over the internet and have been telling people at school all day. I even cursed the scurvy landlubbers that cut me off on the freeway in pirate talk. Here in Detroit, we have a fair sailin’ wind and temperatures that make me shiver my timbers.

Incidentally, my school’s logo is a sail.

  66. 66 Eric - San Diego Sep 19th, 2006 at 1:07 pm

I hate to rain on your parade but it was 83 degrees today. Unusually high for this season, though, I must add in, it was 87 degrees yesterday so there was a noticeable drop. However, our average temperature for this time is around 70 degrees. Scientists are telling us this is due to a shift in the winds so as the wind now comes from the eastern deserts instead of from the ocean to the west (What they’re calling a “Santa Ana”). I postulate that San Diego is just not involved enough in talk like a pirate day or we would be seeing drastically lower temperatures. I urge you all to please talk like a pirate. You are making Him angry and he is punishing San Diego with high temperatures. I sincerely apologize for not talking like a pirate myself in this message, but I feel my point will be more accepted by the general public if I refrain from talking like a pirate. Argg, fight global warming. Pillage and plunder!

Avast, me hearties, here in the capital of the New World- Washington, DC- I fear it is not as cold as it might be. With the all scurvy pirates in the Capitol, the heat they generate has raised the temperature. May his noodly appendage touch their blackdog hearts on this holiest of days. Raise a bottle of rum to the FSM.

  69. 69 Cabin Mate Connie Sep 19th, 2006 at 1:18 pm

I share with ye, my pirate bretherin of the FSM, a bit of a conversation I had with me First Mate.

me: When yer mascot be a goat, matey, a single mast be right an’ proper says I. Much more ‘d be too much fer the bleatin’ bugger.

Matey: L I be most grateful at the moment that I be finished with me last bit o’ grog not less than a minute ago. Else I’d be wasting the tea that I brewed. (It must have slipped me mind to mention that me mum gave me a teapot to use while I’m away from me hearth and home)

Me: Tis no small task, t’ fire the nasal cannons o’ the likes of you. Har har.

Today in Scottsdale Arizona the typical high is 98 degrees however for some ‘unexplained’ reason today the high is only 92. (src. weather.com)

This to me, a pastafarian, is undeniable proof that the increased pirate activity on this fine day are helping reduce global warming.

    Cheers,
    Ben

Today I was walking around when I felt a sudden chill. I never have felt cold in this hellaciously (spelling is sort of a hit or miss thing for me) hot city known as atlanta. Then I noticed a girl walking by in pirate attire. To be honest, given her hotness, the fact that she was a pirate is the only possible explanation of how cold it felt around her.

  75. 75 Anna Sep 19th, 2006 at 1:39 pm

Yaarg, me maties! Today be a mere 60 degrees here in this land bound village of Martinsville, whreas yestereve was a balmy 75-80. Hello from Connecticut! It does feel pretty cool here right now, but balmy (great word, right???). I wanted to report some pirate-activity here today. At my daughter’s elementary school they celebrated “Talk Like a Pirate Day” by having the kids talk like pirates and make pirate swords and eye patches. It was very cute and my 5-year old has been saying “Argh” all evening! :-) On a side note, I am a high school biology teacher and I would NEVER work in a school that even hinted at having me teach anything about ID. I am more Darwinism than FSMism but hey, this is my first day at the site so maybe there’s hope for me yet! — Kim

The temperatures were in the 70’s and 80’s all weekend and it was sunny, and then today it was rainy and only in the lower 50’s.

This seems like very conclusive data to me.

Last night, here in southern Florida (on the south shore of Lake Ocheechobee) it dropped down to 72f last night. When I got up this mornig, it was so cold that I had to stick a finge up my ass and yell, “Snow Snake” just to get a piss hard on…felt like a true Pirate….

Here in southern Onatrio, it is usually in the mid to low 20’s (celsius) in september, however, it has been unseasonably cold today, with a high of 17, and tomroow is supposed to be 13. It has been discussed that it may be from all the new pastafarians in my area, through spreading the word at my school

  91. 91 db Sep 19th, 2006 at 5:30 pm

Bobby, I just thought I’d alert you–

I just had the most horrid experience on this most holy of days.

My son just came in from school in Salem, Oregon, and he
said a whole troop of pirates marched into his Spanish class,
dressed in piratey garb and “yarrrrrrghing” all over the place,
then began to discuss the “history” of Int’l Talk Like a Pirate
Day, saying it originatated in Haiti! of all places, never once
mentioned its relationship to global warming, and never even
MENTIONING the FSM! I’m in such a state of shock that not
    one “Yarrrrrrgh!” can I utter!

Were you aware of this dangerous heresy? I have now
schooled him in the correct doctrine, but as a fellow
Pastafarian, can I sue the school for so defaming our
great religion? Shit, that’s almost like Intelligent Design–
Teach our kids falsely about FSMism without even saying
a word about Noodley Appendages, global warming, or beer
    volcanos.

And HAITI? In your own state, dude. You oughta do
something about this before it gets outta hand.

    Dot

Tonight we’re watchin’ Cap’n Sparrow, and delightin’ in it.

    I’ll share the recipe for the grog we be swillin;
    2 c apple cider
    1 whole allspice
    5 grinds nutmeg

Boil it up, shut it off. Stir it with a wooden paddle. Pour in it a mug with a good helpin’ of Cap’n Morgans or other SPICED Rum!

Yo ho ho, it’s Captain Grog!

(and I’m usin’ a Jack Skellington mug in honor of his appearance as a pirate in James and the Giant Peach)

And on the nineteenth day of September shalt thou speak like unto the holy buccaneers to mourn the decline in pirates which is surely correlated to the rise of global warming. See the following holy chart…

On this holiest of days, declared by the prophet Dave Barry himself, may you be touched my His Noodly Appendage. RAmen.

Please send all your Pastafarian prayers to brother Magus, who is on the University of Central Florida campus today to preach the starchy word of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. He will be distributing packages of the sacrament (beef and shrimp flavors) taped to which are passages from the Holy Book. May he make many converts who will surely someday bask with us in the shadow of the Beer Volcano and ogle with us the beauty created in the Stripper Factory of Paradise.

We have drawn attention to the celebrations of this most wholly piratey day on the Sepia Mutiny blog. All that pirate talk on the blog today makes my piratey heart go all tingly.

I also have the report from Austin on local temperatures :
Sitting here in Austin, I notice that the temperature low today (60 degrees) is far below the lows for the next ten days. We believe that this is because of the response to our call for pirate dressing today. Such a phenomenon is not unique to Austin as can be clearlt seen from the comment left by many believers.

Yesterday the Captain and I celebrated in fine fair fashion. In addtion to much blogging in pirate-speak, as well as spreading the word about slowing Global Warming, I donned my pirate Hello Kitty bandana (Ahoy Kitty, if you will) and we walked down to the waterfront for some lunch. Then we bought some sex toys (because that’s the kind of pirates we are), and later rented Captain Blood and the Black Swan and got a pack of Pirates of the Spanish Main cards.

Temperature data for Portland Maine yesterday…Partly cloudy, slightly breezy; high 78.

  113. 113 Joshua Yates Sep 20th, 2006 at 11:46 am

In Warren, MI on 9/19/2006 we experienced a high temperature 10 degrees lower than the historical average high temperature for that day. I believe that this is direct evidence linking temperature to pirate activity. On 9/18/2006 (the day before) it was 10 degrees warmer on par with the average for that time of year.

  114. 114 IngyIngo Sep 20th, 2006 at 12:29 pm

With me coming from Germany, I really was in doubt if our holy master had deserted us, because he let the leader of the Christian Church (you know, that ol’ fella with the giant hat and the night robe) emerge right from our middle. But I am doubting no more, due to the recent events I am here to share with my fellow mateys right now.

As I sailed home from work yesterday it was still uncomfortably warm, and I really worried if all our actions and preparations for the “Talk like a pirate day” were just not enough to impress our master. I fell into bed and had no hope left for our world, for global warming would slowly lead us to certain doom.

But that night, His Noodliness spoke to me in my dream…

Still asleep, I suddenly felt more awake than ever before in my life, but I could tell neither place nor time. I immediatly was overwhelmed with the blessing and spiritual clearness emitting from his sheer presence. He then told me that he was very pleased with our efforts connected to this holy day, and that from now on to the end of the year, he will make the sun rise a little later every morning, and, in addition, he will send it off the sky a little earlier, what will be causing a significant temperature drop over the next months. For reasons I was told not to ask for, he also mentioned that this will first affect the northern region of our planet, while the southern region will get its turn after that.

Enlightened by his presence and inspired by his words, I am here to encourage all of you to continue on our ways, and to face any barriers caused by the ignorant wrath of some unbelievers with patience and compassion. Don’t be fooled by those who threaten our peace loving members with visions of places like ‘hell’, which only they know and care about.

BTW: I asked him while he doesn’t make use of his powers to take any actions against those kind of people, and he told me he was too busy listening to them and laughing his ass off.

    Harr, my mateys…

By the Way… Did anyone see the Wife Swap episode on Monday 9/18? It featured a professional organize trading places with the wife of a family of pirates. Too bad they missed Talk Like a Pirate Day, but I guess the silly networks can’t go around changing their schedules to suit an important holiday like this one. Read a brief bio of the families here (http://abc.go.com/primetime/wifeswap/episode/305/bio.html), if you’re interested. I didn’t realize that the Dad of the Pirate Family was one of the co-founders of Talk Like a Pirate Day. Go figure.

  117. 117 Kristina Sep 20th, 2006 at 4:25 pm

The temperature has droped dramatically here (Northern Indiana). Two days ago it was almost 70 degrees fahrenheit (highest), whereas yesterday it was only 54 degrees fahrenheit(highest)! Now it’s back up to near 60 degrees. It’s good to know people are doing their part in diminishing globle warming.

This means that GLOBAL cooling IS A CORRELATED SCIENTIFIC FACTOID so please hang onto your winter willy warmers for the time being.
